No surprise, but he's already signed.
-
not surprising... he said after getting drafted that he wanted to sign real soon... considering Kanny could use him and that he really doesn't need much, if any, time in rookie ball, I could see him starting out in Kanny.
-
I'd still rather have Fields, but his suckage at AAA this year is a bit worrisome.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 10:28 PM) You guys really should see David Cook hit a homerun. It is something to behold. I've seen homeruns, but his are absolutely majestic. Majestic lasers. You should bring your video camera, videotape his every AB, and if he hits a homer, upload that video to youtube...

Assuming we sign our first 10 picks, which includes Jordan Danks and Steven Upchurch, I'd say something like: 1. Gordon Beckham 2. Aaron Poreda 3. Jordan Danks 4. John Shelby 5. Lance Broadway 6. Jack Egbert 7. Nevin Griffith 8. Steven Upchurch* (If he doesn't sign, move up the following 2 and add Morel) 9. Dan Hudson 10. Andrew O'Niel I put the rookies and Nevin Griffith lower because we still don't know what they are all about. However, I put Danks and Beckham higher because we know a lot more about them. If we somehow sign Long, I'd place him at 5.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 08:02 PM) Long was drafted as a pitcher so if he signs I'd assume he'll be on the mound. Just because it says pitcher on the draft tracker doesn't mean that the org. is actually going to use him as a pitcher.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 06:47 PM) For his size he has solid athletism and he probably could end up handling LF (he'd have a strong arm for a LFer). However, who knows how his body will fill as he ages (he's already built like an olineman) and if he slows down any more you'd be talking about a guy with little range in left (that said, El Caballo found a way to handle left, even if he isn't that good). Regardless, if Long is going to make it it will be because he can flat rake (and hit 40 plus HR's). I'd say he's built more like a DE. He seems like he'd be good off the edge.
-
From what I have read, he is very athletic and I think he could even play a little LF if needed be.

I'm hearing thunder and looks like more rain by me, and I'm not too far away from the cell... I have a feeling we might have a double header on monday.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 06:33 PM) that was a great read chisoxfn, what position does howies kid play??? P.S. thanks for the account help man Long plays both P and 1B, but I feel his future is at 1B.
-
so, did he wait until after the draft to defect so he could then be a FA and make a lot more money?
-
that was a good read while i was putting aloe vera cream on my sun-burnt skin...

This would be a fabulous draft class for us if we can get Danks, Upchurch, and Long all to sign. Throw them into the mix along with Beckham, Morel, O'Niel, Hudson, Dubler, and some of the other more refined college picks, and I think this draft had great balance. Oh yeah, that Weaver guy out of high school we picked doesn't sound to bad, and Kuhn hit over .400 at WVU and just seems like the type of player you hate to doubt. However, I think we will have a real tough time singing Long as usually once HS players fall past 20 they tend to get even tougher to sign. However, I hope we throw 1st-2nd round money at Long. A couple of other HS guys drafted later on that intrigue me as Thorpe and McCann, but they seem to be tough signs as well. Hopefully we will throw big money as these HS guys this year, along with Danks.
-
Gordon, Morel, O'Niel, Danks and maybe Hudson and/or Dubler will all likely start right away in Kanny or Winson-Salem, IMO due to the fact their game is more refined then most of the rest. Hudson as well as most of the pitchers we drafted (out of college) will probably start out in rookie ball as I have noticed we like to start our pitchers out in rookie ball and see how they do from there. If they do good, they might get promoted. Dubler will probably start out in Great Falls due to the fact these teams need a catcher.

could someone explain exactly what BABIP is?

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 02:17 PM) So lets say we sign Beckham, Danks, Morel all pretty soon. When is the earliest they can start in our minors? Do they have to wait until next year, or could, say, Beckham be placed in Great Falls or W-S or wherever next month? They could start as soon as their signed, however, some like Beckham still have college ball to still play.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 06:14 AM) KW didn't draft his son, it was his scouts' call. I think the Yankees drafted a 102 year old ex Negro League player around the same time. The whole MLB draft is a crapshoot. Even the first round a decent percentage never make it to the major leagues and most of them don't provide much impact. There will be guys from the draft picked after KW Jr. who will be good players and chances are a 22 year old who gets pinch hit for on his college team is a big overdraft in the 6th round, but at least he will sign. People love the Jordan Danks pick, but if he doesn't sign, its a worse pick than Junior. No they didn't and that was something completely different. It was a tribute to all the living Negro players. Each team drafted one in honor of them. And lol if actually believe it was the scouts call on drafting KWjr. How naive can you be? While you might consider the MLB draft a "crapshoot", you still drafted the BPA, especially in the first 10 rounds.

Brent Morel was the Chicago White Sox 3rd Round Selection (86 overall) in the 2008 MLB First Year Player Draft. He bats and throws right handed, and plays 3B for Cal Poly, and was awarded all Big-West Honors this past season. My first impression of him is that he looks like a decent hitter but won't hit for too much power. He has some speed, and athletic ability however. He doesn't look like a superstar, but he does look like a solid ball player.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 03:03 AM) Which is why Jerry Owens has 0 plate appearances with the Chicago White Sox this season. Yep, some fascination. Owens was a solid prospect when he was traded for a waiver claim. The Sox essentially claimed Owens off waivers from the Expos/Nationals for a player they were likely going to lose (who, BTW, has never had much more than a cup of tea ever in the majors). And, before anything about Podsednik is thrown out, that was much more of a financial move than it was a baseball move. Ken Williams does not warrant the assertion that he has some fascination with fast guys that have weak sticks. Darin Erstad is not fast, so he doesn't fall in, and I never understood that obsession. Fine, but there is no denying the similarites between KWjr. and Owens.
-
QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 12:34 AM) Why not, what else would would happen with that money? It'll just stay in Jerry's pocket. If you were the owner I could understand that comment but as a fan how could you not want them to improve the farm even if that does mean giving a lot of money to a potentially high risk guy. lol, I was just about to edit that post and say f*** it, give him first round money, we need the talent.
-
Richar 2-4 with a homer, and went Fields 2-4. Getz 2-3 with a double and 2 rbi's. Getz on the season: .309/.359/.471 with 6 homers, 22 RBI's, 5 SB in 8 attempts, 13 doubles, 1 triple, 27-17 K-BB, and has played all around the field (2B, SS, LF). I think we could see him at some point this season as a lefty bat off the bench and utility player. Plus, hopefully Uribe will be gone next season with Ramirez at SS, leaving 2B open to competition between Getz and Richar.
-
I wouldn't give Long first round money, he's too big of a question mark, IMO. However, if we did, I wouldn't be too upset cause we need the talent.
-
I really hope we sign Upchurh. I really liked his stuff, and think once he fills out some more, he can add some velocity on that fastball. Beckham and Danks from the college ranks and the upside of Upchurch from high school, along with some of the other early picks like O'Niel, Hudson, Dubler, and Morel would make for a very good draft, IMO. If only we didn't have that BS Kenny Williams pick in the 6th... Side note, anyone know if Nevin Griffith is starting out at GF or Bristol?
-
Nice, this is great news. Hopefully he can progress quickly and make it to the bigs by 2010.

Funny, Vazquez finally gets the win when he doesn't have his sharpest stuff. And man was the ball carrying last night. I didn't see Crede's first homer, but his second was a bomb. However, both Dye's and Quentin's were flyballs that kept carrying. Home Field Advantage
