White Sox Fall/Winter League Discussion Thread

Fernando Hernandez has come a long way for a 49th round draft pick. Our AAA bullpen looks pretty good with Onelli Perez, Fernando Hernandez, Dewon Day, Adam Russell, Carlos Vasquez, and a couple of others. -
The only way I'd take Damon for Crede is if the Yankees included almost of half of Damon's remaining contract.
-
Joe Crede and Jose Contreras por favor.
-
One guy I would love to see us deal for... David DeJesus. Plays very good D and is an above average hitter and can get on base at a clip of .355 or higher.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 3, 2007 -> 06:25 PM) I completely agree with this. I'll be surprised if he's with the organization at this point next week. Hopefully he's traded for Pat Burrell or Damon, and not some AAAA pitcher. I agree that it shouldn't be for a AAAA pitcher (or rather a A Ball pitcher), but Damon has lost a lot of bat speed and I don't know if I want him here. If the Yankees pick up some of that contract, now thats a different story.

If Northwestern wasn't full of pussies who stop playing when it's the 4th quarter, they'd be 9-1 right now. Blew games to Duke (ugh!), Michigan (granted, it was while they were struggling), Purdue and now Iowa. Ohio St, we didn't stand a chance. But this pisses me off so much, and now our bowl game hopes are pretty much gone. However, Northwestern looks like it could be a team to be reckoned with next year. -
ideal bench... Mackowiak, Owens, Loretta, Molina, and if we go with only 6 men in the pen, Ozuna or Bourgeois. I know, never gonna happen, but still!

SS is a position that desperately needs upgrading, and we can find easier/cheaper replacements for the OF somewhere else besides Hunter. Furcal only had 19 stolen bases last year because of injury problems and not being asked to steal as much. He can steal 35-45 bases a season, as he did do that in 06. The only reason why Furcal had a bad season last year was because he had several nagging injuries. And, Furcal hasn't shown the same signs of slowing down as Hunter has. Furcal fills two big needs, SS and leadoff hitter. Hunter justs adds more pop to this lineup at a price that he is not worth. Is Furcal worth 13 million? Of course not. But Hunter is definitely not worth 4-5 years at 15 mil a season.
-
Wing and Bourgeois should both be kept.
-
Yeah, you're right. A .324 OBP, .469 SLG (.793 OPS), .271 AVG, 20 homers, and 85-90 RBI's is well worth a 5 year contract worth 15 million every season, especially for a player who will only get worse, at least in my opinon. Yeah, he might still be able to make player out there, but he has slowed down tremendously, and I would not be surprised to see a serious drop off in bat speed within the next few years as well. Torii Hunter might help the team in the short term, but he does not do anything for the long term, and in fact just hurts our long term even worse, if you ask me. Also, how is Garland pretty much out the door? It seems to me you are just making that up.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 12:41 PM) The Newark Star-Ledger seems to think the Sox might non-tender Crede. I find that highly unlikely, but there you go. I wouldn't really trust anything I read from a newpaper out of New Jersey
-
Furcal hopefully... And this obsession people have with Hunter is sickening. Face it, Hunter is old and just is a little better then a mediocre player who had a huge contract season. 5 years 90 million for Hunter would be one of the worst moves in baseball.
-
screw Hunter. I don't see why anyone would want for when he will not preform anywhere near what he did in his contract season, and it will be a move that would be regretted for a while. But I like the idea of getting Guillen. He is a bit younger then Dye, and adds some fire to the locker room. Also, if he is preforming well, along with Fields, as well as Dye doing good, he can be used as trade bait to get perhaps bullpen help or something at the deadline, if we are in competition. I like Gage's idea, I would be a fan of a lineup of something like... 1. Furcal, SS 2. Crisp, CF 3. Thome, DH 4. Konerko, 1B 5. Dye, RF 6. Guillen, LF 7. Pierzynski, C 8. Fields, 3B 9. Richar, 2B

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 09:57 PM) And he's a pretty s***ty hitter; .750 OPS, sure, but if it costs Carter - which it might - then no f'ing way. Oh I agree with that. If it costs Carter, screw that.

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 09:17 PM) Why will Crisp improve? A lot of people say he will, but why? What has he shown lately to give anyone that impression. He's been horrible at the plate the last two seasons. Not that I want either at their prices, but I'd much rather have Castillo than Crisp. They are very similar players (good speed, good defense), but Castillo is clearly more productive. Well, Crisp has played half of his games at Boston, and being a switch hitter, most of his AB's are as a lefty, and Boston isn't a very lefty friendly ball park. Crisp playing half of his games in our launching pad will most likely increase his stats. Castillo is on the downside of his career and his skills are declining (like another certain Twins free agent). Plus, we already have our 2B, we don't have our CF and/or LF.
-
I'm not a huge fan of Mack, but he is a good bench player. I'd love to see him brought back however.

QUOTE(bigruss22 @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 07:48 PM) But then your stuck with Floyd and Danks in your rotation. Unless you sign a guy like Kris Benson, who is probably going to cost alot without giving you that much, so really the FA market isnt good for filling the rotation and our prospects arent good enough to fill the spots all season long. Even guys like Egbert are starting to break down with the # of innings going up. Maybe a guy like Phillips will step up and become an okay 5th starter later in the season but the sox just wont win this division or wildcard with floyd and danks(this season). You gotta give the youngsters the ball some time. Danks has already had one season and will only get better. Floyd is still young as well and can be a big surprise next season. You can't keep "veterans" in there forever. What, should we have all our top pitching prospects rot away in the minors wasting possibly some good years? Or trade them all and have no pitching depth in the farm? We gotta give the young guys the ball, and better now then ever as well, as our odds of competing next year is minimal right now.
-
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 08:55 PM) That's what Crisp is, and yet some people want it. I agree with you though. Crisp has more speed, is younger (more of a chance of improvement), and plays very good D in Center. I think it is a pretty big difference.
-
Wilson Betemit or the Milky Way would be a very solid acquisition.

My Dad retired from the force today... Kinda shocking. He had 3 years left until mandatory retirement, and from what I heard from people he worked with and such, they thought they would have to pry his badge from his hands before he would ever retire. It's gonna be strange with him always around now. Plus, I was really surprised because he bought a bunch of new equipments just a year or so ago to. Just thought I'd throw in my random thought for the day.

QUOTE(Allsox @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 11:47 AM) I'd rather overpay for Hunter than overpay for Aaron Rowand. Hunter has more power and at 35 would still be better in CF than the PA$ION. And I have no idea why Uribe's option isn't picked up already. David Eckstein blows and while Uribe's OBP is terrible, his D and 20 HRs make up for it. Uribe's option CAN NOT be picked up. He'd be getting paid what, 5 million(?) to suck. If we can't find a replacement within a certain amount of time, we could then give him a lesser contract, as Uribe is not even close to being worth 5 million. Also, I'd much rather over pay for Rowand then Hunter as Rowand hasn't shown massive signs of slowing down and won't be 40 in the final year of his contract. With that being said, we could go without either and save the money for something else.
-
If Kenny Williams is actually considering giving hunter 5 years at 90 million, I quit being a sox fan until he gets freaking fired and Hahn takes over as GM.

KW to make a strong push for Crisp?

Torii Hunter would be close to one of Kenny William's worst moves ever as GM, if it were to happen. The guy is on the wrong side of 30, and don't expect him to put up numbers anywhere close to his contract year numbers. Plus, he has slowed down a ton. I'd rather sign Rowand then get Hunter. -

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 10:25 PM) And your solution to fixing a 90 loss team is adding Crisp and Dejesus. Sure they'd save a ton of money, but they's win the same amount of games with Fields in LF, Owens in Center and Crede at 3B as they would with Fields at 3B and Dejesus and Crisp in the OF. my solution is addind speed (DeJesus, Crisp, Furcal). We have plenty of pop in the middle of our order, we had no speed and no one to get on however. DeJesus and Furcal should, based on their career averages, be able to get OBP at least at .345 but probably higher. We add Crisp to the bottom of the order and he has some pop and has plenty of speed, and plays excellent D in center. It is cheaper, and doesn't involve us reverting back to all or nothing days. -

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 10:11 PM) Holy s***, that's all it takes?!!! I am extremely hopeful (I said extremely!) that Owens and Gonalez and Timo (yeah, get yer ass moving on that trade, KW!) will have obp over .360, dammit. I mean, I'm hoping not just that they have that obp, I'm even hoping that I continue to hope that they have that obp! You can't ask for more hope than I'm pouring on the Sox! Playoffs, here we come! Well, I overestimated Crisp's career OBP, as he has average only an OBP of .330 in his career, I thought it was closer to .350. However, Furcal and DeJesus have averaged an OBP at .350 or close to it throughout their career. In fact, DeJesus has yet to have a season with his OBP under .350. It is more then just hoping as obviously Owens and Gonzalez have never had an OBP over .340 in their MLB careers and neither has shown by judging at their minor league numbers that they could do it consistently do it down in the minors either. Owens did it twice, and Gonzalez just plain sucks, as well as Time (who had his first ever season with an OBP over .350 last, which was in only 90 AB's.) So yeah, there is a bit of a difference.
