Official 2010-2011 NCAA Football Thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 16, 2010 -> 03:35 PM) Why doesn't OU have more power? Why does Texas control all. It isn't like they are some small school. They have an exceptional football program (oen of the best in college football history) and recently a pretty strong basketball program. Do you really have to ask that?

HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN THE STANLEY CUP!!
Great move regarding Tallon. After reading my comments, perhaps I sound too extreme. I'm not saying what he did was anything more than inappropriate behavior for the situation. I doubt too many people thought, hey let's go to the parade and watch the Hawk players get drunk. Maybe we can toss them a beer and they will open it with their teeth. But again, and I agree with others here who have pointed out the pattern. This was, at the minimum, just a youthful mistake by someone caught up in a huge moment. Many people outgrow this and learn responsibility. However, based on his short history, we also have someone who could be a Bob Probert in training.

What jobs are growing in the DuPage and Chicagoland area?
I'm shocked that no one has endorsed taking the job of an illegal.

Healthcare reform
If I was an insurance company, I think I would be tempted to toss out some rate increases and blame the upcoming changes.

Summer Drinks
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 03:52 PM) That sounds like a winner. A nice twist on a boilermaker. I bet the same drink with Laird's Applejack instead of bourbon would work nicely as well. So many great drinks, so few liver cells left. fixed One recipe in Remixed that caught my eye was the Dharma Bum, a hot drink of Tazo organic chai concentrate, Silk soy creamer, and spiced rum. I'm wondering why, besides a possible endorsement, he would prefer soy creamer to regular creamer.

HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN THE STANLEY CUP!!
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 08:57 AM) You mean at a rally where people are tossing him beers and the team is forking over the cash for bottles of champagne? I've done a complete 180 on this topic... Kaner got drunk at a booze-filled celebration. Big deal. It's not like he pulled his pants down during his speech. I get that point, I really do. I understand the post game party, the day after party with friends. Well if people were tossing him beers, what choice did he have but to drink them all? That is kind of cool for the fans, "hey kids toss a beer to the player and watch him drink it! Hee hee, shake it up first." I guess most of the 21 year olds here drink every beer tossed to them and can't understand saying no. It's done and over.

Catch All Anything Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 18, 2010 -> 09:07 AM) So I popped for Lies My Teacher Told Me on Ebay. I am interested to say the least. Pretty good read. Much of it starts coming off as a bit of self grandstanding, but he's a college professor and we've all heard that tone before.

What jobs are growing in the DuPage and Chicagoland area?
Think about all the jobs illegals are doing and be ready to take one of those when they get deported. Meat packing plants, landscapping, restaurants, migrant farm worker, will all be looking for new employees. And in general, if you hold a degree past the minimum, it will be accepted.

Summer Drinks
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 08:20 AM) Whenever I was in England before, it always seemed like everyone drank those fruity alco-pops, even guys. Those things are so sweet too, I can barely finish one. I'm a sucker for the Leinie's Summer Shandy. I've been mixing some of the classic tiki drinks, and despite the fruit juices, the better ones are balanced with the alcohol and very tasty with some depth of flavor. Sadly, we lost the art of mixing drinks.

HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN THE STANLEY CUP!!
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 13, 2010 -> 01:45 PM) Wow, you must be a fun person. And you must be a great employee. Again, when you grow up and get a job, you will understand there is different behavior at work and in private. Perhaps your mom and dad get drunk at work, but most adults do not. That is why bartenders and waitresses are sober and their customers get drunk. Different roles. I thought most young adults understand that, but I guess some do not. Again, on the flight back from the game, no problem, keep chugging the booze. Back home with your buddies, keep the booze flowing, he can't celebrate unless he's drunk (or so you're telling me) Which makes me wonder how he will celebrate other life events. I can see him getting s***faced and spraying beer on is new born woo woo! At work, in front of millions, days later, hold back, be professional. Respect your employer and league. But I guess he can't slow his drinking for a couple hours. After almost fifty years on this planet, and meeting and knowing enough alcoholics, you see some common behaviors. Getting drunk at innapropriate times is one common factor. I'm not saying he is, he just might be a socially inept kid who gets drunk sometimes. But as the incidents keep racking up, it will be hard to come to any other conclusion.

Healthcare reform
I really hope Republicans can make this a disaster so they can get themselves elected. The real tragedy would be for America to lead the world in affordable, quality healthcare for everyone. Republicans would lose elected jobs and we know how terrible that would be. And that is basically how this sits. Democrats need this to succeed, the GOP needs it to fail. The worse the failure the better for them.

Summer Drinks
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 08:11 AM) Since I've been in London, all the girls here drink nothing but Pimms it seems. Basically it's gin, you mix it with lemonade and put all sorts of fruit into it. It's actually quite nice, quite sweet, but I'll stick to Beer I think going forward. It was a popular drink mixed with soda at the polo games. Less sweet and decent. I had forgotten about Pimms.

Summer Drinks
The cocktail thread seems to have hit a wall and has become a jumbo thread so I figured I would start a new thread just for summer drinks. I just picked up Beachbum Berry's Remixed, a new edition of his first two tiki drink recipe books and can't wait to start mixing. First I have to leave this youth camp where alcohol is not allowed On my one night off where we do not have any youth in camp, I have given up on bar margaritas, their challenge seems to be how to make one for $1 not how to make one I'd actually enjoy drinking. Gin (Beefeater) and tonic has been refreshing, I haven't found a beer that works for me this summer, but will keep trying. I have the double challenge of trying yo lose twenty pounds, so I can't have too many cocktails, which makes the challenge of making each one count important.

Vacation, Where are you going?
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 21, 2010 -> 12:00 PM) San Diego and then for the anniversary, New York City. We were going to go to Key West but I'm not a fan of tar balls. I have been talking to some of the business owners here on South Padre and they are seeing an increase in business to our non tar ball beaches. Two years ago we had Hurricane Dolly chase business elsewhere around the gulf coast, last year it was a red tide. So while they dislike the reason for the increase, they are happy to be digging themselves out of the hole quicker.

Senators propose granting president emergency Internet power
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 21, 2010 -> 08:12 PM) No they don't. So a private company could basically shut down the internet by shutting off their lines?

Vacation, Where are you going?
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 21, 2010 -> 11:21 AM) We're looking into a long weekend getaway to this place and a day or so in San Fran before we head back. We're also going to Vegas in September for a weekend. That place looks awesome. We're probably going to return to Big Bend and Terlingua this winter break.

I need help with my Carmax situation.
If you are wondering if you paid too much, Kelly Blue Book is a decent source to check, but use it as a guide. When I have bought a used vehicle I went shopping for a specific vehicle that I did my homework on. I am planning on picking up a 3/4 ton pickup to tow a travel trailer. I know which models I want from Toyota, Chevy, and Ford. I've narrowed it down to a couple model years and packages. Now I am watching listed prices on a few sites and in the classifieds. By the time I make a move at the end of the year, I will know as much, if not more than the salesperson across from me. It may also allow me to buy out of state where pickups are not in as high demand as Texas.

Vacation, Where are you going?
After spending 5 weeks on South Padre Island, we're heading to Natchez, Mississippi and following the Natchez Trace Parkway to Nashville where I hope to catch up with YASNY. Then it is on to Chicago for a few days, catching the game on June 26th. On the way back we're stopping in Springfield to see some of the Lincoln sites and a couple towns in Texas.

Senators propose granting president emergency Internet power
IIRC this was first proposed during the Clinton admin, a couple of times in various stages during Bush. How important is the internet in the event of an attack by the enemy (whomever that may be) and who best to fight the attack? An all out assault at government services (some of which may have been privatized) water treatment, sewer, various food chain items, could be a real problem. Perhaps we know what the US plans would be if we attacked someone in that way. I don't know the answer. Perhaps a hundred thousand system admins of various skill levels, each fighting an individual battle to save their system versus a coordinated government/military defense. Does the government have powers over the airwaves during these times?

Arizona requires you to carry your papers
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 15, 2010 -> 04:39 PM) Yeah, I mean we all know that in reality illegals are no worse (and are sometimes better) than our own worthless citizens, but that doesn't justify them coming into the country illegally. Bingo. But it does explain why the only government action in the past 40 years has been Reagan granting amnesty. It is a great budget help.

The environment thread
So what you are telling us Kap is you hated Obama before he was elected, hated him when he got elected, told us what a piece of crap he is, and now you are seeing things that confirm your claims.

HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN THE STANLEY CUP!!
I do not think anyone is saying he doesn't deserve to knock back a few, hell get totally drunk and yell and scream all he wants, but, and try to stay with me, *not at the parade in front of 2,000,000 of your customers*. I find it hard to believe that so many people here believe that there is no difference between getting drunk with your buddies in private and getting drunk while your company is on display for the entire world to see. How long does he get a "I can be drunk anytime I want pass?" The logic just escapes me. Hey, his first kid was born so he started slamming beers at the hospital! It's a once in a lifetime thing, the greatest moment of his life. He's 21 or 25 or whatever. Let him celebrate!

Arizona requires you to carry your papers
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 12, 2010 -> 08:59 AM) The state is enforcing federal law. That's SO unconstitutional. So what do you think of Arizona rewriting US citizenship laws? And I believe we wil agree on this. Something needs to be done, the walk over and give birth situation is out of control. But the way Arizona is going about it is wrong. We need to change the Constitution, which needs to be done nationally. I'd even go so far as to say it makes Arizona look even crazier, if that was possible.
