  1. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 3, 2011 -> 02:37 AM) No. For Mark I see Cards, Sox, or retiring. Yup, I would better easily vs. any other outcome.

Political arguments right now are baddd news bears.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 2, 2011 -> 05:41 PM) So I understand, the 1% are people with jobs right? Well I tried to imply since he got a promotion that he was going up the ladder to the 1%.
  4. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Nov 2, 2011 -> 03:41 PM) Why did they do that? In the middle of the game? Seems like they should be penalized for that. Looks like the first point of the game by the hometeam.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 2, 2011 -> 01:51 PM) Yeah, the compliance thing could be awful, but it is probably a really good opportunity to have. That kind of experience is always going to be in demand. Plus, he's telling me when I am working on the compliance stuff I can do it whenever and wherever I want, which is a big plus for me. Definitely a great thing to have in your back pocket, just will probably be a tough thing to get through, but who said the climb to the 1% would be easy?
  6. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 2, 2011 -> 01:31 PM) ‘‘No doubt I can look at the swings of other players and see things. ‘My style was my style, but the bottom line is getting the hands in the right position, the body in the right position, putting your head on the ball and making a good swing. I don’t care if you’re two feet, one feet, hands up, hands down. You just have to get to that same spot and make it work.’’ -Frank Thomas Any hitting coach should know that, from little league to MLB, that's what they preach as the basics.

Congrats! I'm sure it will be a move for the better, and parts of it do sound pretty interesting, except for the compliance part .
  8. QUOTE (G&T @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 07:18 PM) Weaker, yes, but also incredibly consistent and good. Plus, their rauch this fall was solid so I'm excited to try something new from them. I think they've been stepping up their game with all the competition. I also think the newer demand for more "microbrew" style beers with a brand name you know is increasing heavily for them. You know that you will almost always get a decent brew out of them and the variety packs give a gret mix for a decent price (compared to most microbrews). Though they will have an occasional epic fail.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 04:39 PM) He's turning into a total gay douche on the show, I wish they would just minimize him. The rest of the show is still pretty good. Nothing compares to Blue Mountain state IMO right now. Comic f***ing gold. A giant THANK YOU for pointing out that show on here, I watched every episode in like 3 days.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 04:58 PM) It is badass. Even though its technically the baby of the monster family, I get looks and compliments everywhere I go. And at its small engine size I am still 0-60 in under 4 seconds. Damn that's ridiculous, how do they handle on the highway?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 04:38 PM) I have a 2005 Ducati Monster dark (620) Only about 5k miles on it when I bought it ( I think). Pretty pristine condition, wheels are a little worn but not bad, it had a custom handlebar and headlight set up and had the tail chop done (common) Only one small ding on the gas tank from the handlebars which I fixed with touch up flat black paint. 5k cash in hand was all I paid. I fully expect to get close to that when I sell it to upgrade in a year or two. Damn, Im doing that once I have the cash and go fulltime. Those things look badass.
  13. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 02:49 PM) ...and I agree with him. How many times do we have to watch someone take a walk only to be stranded on base because the people behind them make nothing happen? The most prolific hitters should be looking to make something happen, not look for walks...and in that regard, I agree with him. I will never blame a hitter for taking a walk, because he didn't produce an out. No hitter should ever be looking for a walk, they do what is given to them. I also don't expect them to smash every bad pitch thrown them, if the foul it off or whatever and proceed to walk then that is what was given to them. It's the at bats where guys chase bad pitches, etc that kill me. Essentially, Im a big proponent of pitch recognition, the better you have the better hits and OBP you will have.
  14. QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 12:06 PM) Execpt compthe NBA draft and the MLB draft are not comparable. The NBA has to do that because how many actual NBA players are in the draft? Meaning almost every pick after the 10th one completly sucks. What many fail to realize about hard slotting is that it hurts small market teams. Face it, to sign top tier talent in the draft is no more expensive than giving Yuni Betancort a one year deal. The draft is really the only place a small market team can complete to sign the best talent with the big market because the players are cheap. Further, hard slotting will only make less of the best athletes, those who otherwise play football or basketball, not choose baseball. Instead those players will go to college on a full ride (Baseball scholarships are not full ride) because of the reward to make quick money in football or basketball. Hard slotting sucks and it pointless. It's Uncle Bud trying to keep costs down on players who are already cheap. In hard slotting you have 2 options, draft the best player available (why would you otherwise?) or forfeit the pick, so it essentially forces teams to draft the best player available. How exactly is that bad??
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 11:37 AM) Honestly in my view, a hard slot with a world wide draft is the biggest thing that could bring some semblance of parody back to baseball. That way the worst team would have first dibs at the top players in the world. The system now just rewards the rich teams at every level. International free agents, international prospects, and national prospects are all dominated by the highest spending teams. If you break up that monopoly, even in one or two of those levels, it can level the playing field for the KCs and Pittsburghs of the world. To expand more, KC, DC, Pitt, etc, yea they may be spending more in the draft, but the Yanks and Red Sox spend just as much if not more even when picking 25+ picks later each round. Why is that? What does that mean about how the draft operates? It is pretty much stating that teams already on top are paying and lobbying to stay on top.

And teams will still have the ability to choose who they want and have a competitive advantage in scouting, which I would much prefer to see rather than it being about money. Teams would also be able to plan out expenses better.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 11:36 AM) Edward James Olmos. I'm not sure why people started saying EJM, though. I think one mistake led to it being repeated. See I was going with Edwin Jackson's Mother, it made not knowing who it was very entertaining.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 11:26 AM) What is there to expound on? Low budget teams have to pass on guys with the highest demands, even if they are the best players. That's why we see so many players drop because of "signability issues" to teams like Boston and New York who have no problems meeting their bonus demands. In a hard slot, they are locked into a price, so it won't matter. If they drop in the draft, it gets worse dollarwise, so the incentive would be to go to the first team that wanted you, and not to create outrageous demands to move. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 11:28 AM) Can't the large market teams do the same thing in drafting that they do in free agency? If there are a lot of potential "unsignable" players in a draft, can't the Yankees/Red Sox let it leak that their draft budget this year has been upped by X amount of dollars, more than the Pirates or Rays could afford. I'm sure the agents know where the money is every year, and I could see a few top players being "bought" this way too, just like free agency. And thank you. Leaving it open to the market to decide the price of a player makes it the competitive advantage of the teams in larger markets who have more money. The point of the order of the draft is to help balance out the talent level by infusing the bad teams with "better" young talent. Players should not be dropping because of money.
  19. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 11:14 AM) Insightful. If you look at the economics/baseball reasoning that you provided then it's fairly obvious they are morons.
  20. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 11:08 AM) You are in the absolute minority that thinks that. 95% of baseball hates the idea. This is not hyperbole. It's why hard-slotting isn't even close to becoming reality. Thankfully. Then baseball is full of morons.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 08:09 AM) HIMYM: The Barney is a Canadian storyline was funny, but other than that, the show is a big meh. I'm caring less & less as to who the mother is anyway. Very true. Josh Radnor is acting like he doesn't care anymore either. Jason Segel is completely wasted now too.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:56 AM) Yeah, I have a little Audi TT that I love for the same reasons...still agonizing whether I can justify keeping it as my daily driver when I get my dogmobile or whether I should be responsible and trade it in. Sooo jealous, I've been in love with those since my neighbor had one as a kid. Hyundai Veloster is a new car that I will be watching in terms of reviews the next few years, looks really cool and MPG is 28/40.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 1, 2011 -> 09:35 AM) I find that ridiculous. Most of those schools would want you to have 3 years experience anyway. If your manager wants you to do that, i hope his company helps their employees with the cost. These next few years should help guide you toward what kind of business you actually like working in, then use the MBA to give you a final launch toward it. I don't agree with your manager, but whatever. Of MBAs, i'd imagine UIC is the best. What you will need to work on most is the math section. I imagine you haven't done algebra, etc, for years. Well he is pushing me because they want to fast track me as soon as possible, so sooner I have an MBA the quicker I can move essentially (though it's not a factor that would completely block me). There is a guy in our department that they are putting the same emphasis on and he went to NW after about 1.5 years of work for PT. Essentially, I have my own goal in mind but my manager wants me in a management position by age 27, which I want to beat (even though that may be unrealistic). Yea I know I'd at least have to brush up on math, economics, etc. Haven't really practiced some of that stuff in a few years and others in close to 5 years.
  24. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 31, 2011 -> 11:39 PM) See, I know you'll never admit it since they were always within shooting range and you can just point to the fact that they were never ___ games out, but they were clearly a sub-par team for the length of the season and they were not coming back. I'm also sure someone will say that's revisionist, but there were plenty of people saying these things throughout the season. That team was clearly struggling all year, it just so happened that no one wanted to break away in that division until late in the season. I understand KW and JR wanting to push this team and hoping it turned around without having to upset fans with a selloff, but I don't agree with that.

So Ive been talking a bit about with my manager about my start time for once I graduate, so that we can both plan things out. I want to, and he's encouraging heavily, for me to pursue my MBA part time as soon as I can, like within a year of undergrad graduation to be enrolled. That said, has anyone here taken the GMAT? How many study hours do I need to plan on? Good resources to buy? And while we are on the subject, what opinions do you guys ahve about the B-schools in Chicago? Obviously Kellogg and Booth are top in the country, but for part time (and a more reasonable expectation) I've heard decent/good things about Depaul/Loyola/UIC. They also cost less than half of Kellogg (I could afford the extra cost, but for going within a year out of undergrad that means I would be living at home for awhile ).
