Pieces to start moving soon
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 09:57 AM) A defensive replacement on a bad baseball team isn't a valuable piece. You keep throwing the WAR numbers out there, but those are as a starter in AAA. How many ABs do you really think he gets hitting as badly as he has? He'll be an 8th and 9th inning piece for the most part. It is pretty difficult to build up defensive numbers when you play a couple of innings a week. No he threw the WAR number for Gutierrez, not Danks. There are no WAR numbers for minor leaguers.

So when can we start focusing on the 2012 Sox?
QUOTE (sunofgold @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 10:44 PM) This is the AL Central...we better at least be close to .500. lol! We did see some nice production at the end of 2011 from our younger players (Morel, DeAza, Viciedo, Flowers)...that has to give us some hope ...to be at least around .500....lol How old are you?

"Major League Ready Talent" Only
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 03:18 PM) Why would you make that deal? Because you'd be trading for Alexei and Viciedo.

"Major League Ready Talent" Only
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 03:19 PM) And they both are. I know, that's why he said that's what he would trade them for. I thought it was clear that his first post was sarcastic, then when Marty didn't get it he followed it up with more sarcasm by pointing out how valuable they are.

"Major League Ready Talent" Only
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 03:10 PM) Not a whole lot of top 5 SS's available for trade as far as I can tell. Am I really the only one reading his posts as sarcasm?? It seemed like he blatantly just called Alexei a top 5 SS and Viciedo a top prospect...

2011 Cubs Thread
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 20, 2011 -> 12:08 PM) The Jed Hoyer thing is interesting. Look I hate the cubs as much as anyone but how does baseball not look into this more? This is blatant tampering. The Gonzalez trade to Boston looks really fishy here to me. Does San Diego just want to get out of whatever is owed to Hoyer? I ma not certain these moves will do anything but there are certainly enough teams looking to rid themselves of too much stuff here. Because they were friends? It's not like they got him traded to the Cubs then both went there....It was clear that Hoyer had guys he liked from the Sox system and Theo took advantage of that.

Worst Farm System in Baseball
QUOTE (shakes @ Oct 20, 2011 -> 11:22 AM) I don't agree with this at all, at least as far as the draft is concerned. Big spending, in the draft, has not proven a correlation between success. The Dodgers were the lowest spending team in the draft for a long time and produced some very good talent. I think the Sox problem has been player development. It has improved recently, but they have had some very hyped prospects over the last decade, and most have completely fizzled. The amount spent, unless you are the Red Sox and Yankees, also ties closely together to where you pick in the draft. The Pirates spent $9 mill on their top two picks and around $11 mill total, last year. The Sox have gotten creative recently in their draft spending for guys like Sale and Trace Thompson, and have been taking higher ceiling players. I hope that continues, but they really need to put more into development and scouting. I believe I read the Twins have nearly three times the amount of area scouts than the White Sox, and even have more in the Chicagoland area.. I can't argue with international spending and scouting. That to me, is a much larger problem, and they have to get back in the game in Latin America. Well I think you're flat out wrong, there is correlation, it's not the only factor but it's a big one. The Angels was once a top spender in the draft and a perennial top system, now they spend some of the least amount and that's reflected in their middle of the road rankings. Just look at how many average to above average MLB teams are ranked highly in system ratings, it's not just draft position, it's buying the players. I see 5 out of the Top 10 systems as teams that aren't drafting within the top 10 slots, and most of those teams are playoff teams. So how do they do it? It's a combination of 3 main factors: Money in the draft/International Signings/Player Development.

2011-2012 NCAA Basketball Thread
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 20, 2011 -> 11:03 AM) Illinois not making the tourney would have to be a massive failjob. They're the second most talented team in the conference. I personally think they are going to surprise in a good way, I'm thinking a 4-5 seed when it's all said and done. The talent and what should be a well motivated team could be a great mix, I think Weber will be refreshed after losing those guys too.

QUOTE (Felix @ Oct 17, 2011 -> 10:46 AM) That's definitely what it is. After getting Milkman's PM, yea it makes a lot of sense of what he told him. But, Rick also mentioned on the radio to Morgan that the doctor told him something, so would that matter or is that still Rick trying to find a source he can just talk out loud to.

2011 TV Thread
QUOTE (Felix @ Oct 16, 2011 -> 09:54 PM) I don't think it was either. They started off strong with the scene with the horde and thankfully didn't break that up, but after that it seemed like there was a commercial every 5 minutes. I'm all about supporting shows while they're on the air, but if they're going to impact my enjoyment of the show with the amount of commercials, I'm going to do what I can to avoid it. Since Idont have cable I streamed it online and just finished it, there was a solid 65 minutes of airtime, so that's not a bad ratio, but I don't know how they broke that up. Good start to the season, though there was most definitely a difference in the graphics, it seemed like there was a lot more cheap animations in there than before. And it sucks that the news the doc gave Rick doesn't seem to be good news at all.

2011 Films Thread
Watched a few movies yesterday. Tron: disappointing, I expected better, but it wasn't bad by any stretch, just not as good as I hoped. Midnight in Paris: I really enjoyed this one, I cracked up whenever Hemingway spoke.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 08:55 PM) Just like it was up to home owners to realize that maybe it was a bad idea to take out that $400,000 interest only loan so we can live in a house 3x larger than we need AND take that trip to Bermuda? Seems that when you replace schools with banks, it is suddenly predatory lending. I think the schools didn't to anything to persuade students that just maybe they might want to reconsider that double degree in Art History and Latin. With the government backing student loans and making them easier to get, the schools just kept jacking up the tuition and lowering the bar to get in, chasing the all mighty dollar. And FYI, I agree with you that people SHOULD take job prospects into account when trying to choose a major. But after all the years of the liberal education establishment telling them they are special, to do what they LIKE and making it so there are no 'winners' and 'losers' with 'participation' trophies and such, can you blame them for thinking it is all someone else's fault? I do think mortgages are harder for people to understand, but yes same principle. Personal finance classes should be mandatory in every state for high school students, understand just how much those student loans will cost you, or how much that mortgage really costs. In terms of the "liberal education," I went through all that and I personally think that's overblown. There are lots of people out there who have that mentality, but in many advanced and AP courses I saw more competition and drive than anything. Everybody knew that we were all competing against each other for those top schools. And one more point, this is why high school athletics are so important, having that extra competitiveness for students really teaches them hard work and effort can pay off.

Job Hunt Thread
QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Oct 13, 2011 -> 12:01 AM) Are Help Desks very closely managed in the industry? Closely managed as in micro-manage each employees time, literally by the minute on what they're working on? I know that at our branches our phone operators are monitored to the minute, not micromanaged but as a goal to hit a certain % of time with the customers. It's actually motivating for them, and gives them something to aim for everyday.
