When/where/how did Jose Valentin get the nickname:
witesoxfan replied to Be Good's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Yep. Manos is Spanish for "hands." -
That s*** doesn't surprise me at all. In fact, I notice that kind of stuff happens to me all the time when I'm playing sports. You concentrate on harder plays, and lose focus on easier, routine plays. Given, he is a professional and is making $5 mill a year. Just saying it is easy as hell to lose focus on the easy ones.

No, I think it is a crack at a joke. Saying last year and in years past we would accidentally win by walk-off variety. I do not think it is a shot at the Sox at all.

That helps

Sweet name Always cool when a person makes a post introducing themself. And on this site...talk away. I mean, SS2k4 has 16,000 posts. You can't shut him up. You talk, and we won't shut you up. Welcome aboard.

Buffalo meat? Are you kidding me. I live in buffalo land. And yes I have. But it was a while ago...I was like in 2nd grade. I still thought it was f***ing good though.

Range Factor. He makes a good amount of errors a year(probably less then mediocre). 20-25 errors a year for him are almost guaranteed, and in 2000 he even made 36. Not good. But he gets to more balls then most SS's. As an example, in 2000, while committing 36 errors, his range factor was 5.12, compared to the league average of 4.71. I can't tell you how many more balls that is that he got to, but it is a good amount. Last year, his range factor was 4.63 compared to the league average of 4.54, and that is at the age of 34, when players are supposed to start to decline and get slower. He's still above the league average. As a comparison, Alex Rodriguez had a range factor of exactly 4.54 last year, and he won the gold glove. As another comparison, Edgar Renteria, the NL Gold Glove winner, had a range factor of 4.15, compared to the NL league average of 4.52. He was considerably lower then most. And he still made 16 errors. Jose Valentin made 20 errors. So honestly, who played better defense? Given, I have not done a lot of research on these statistics, and these statistics can be inflated or deflated, depending on where the team plays, what type of offenses are in their division, what type of pitching staff his team has, who is around him defensively, where his manager plays him, etc, etc, etc. Brando seems to know a little more about this. He can probably help support this argument.

What did you expect for $3-4 mill a year? Did you expect him to hit 25 homers, hit .275, drive in 90 every year? For the price, we have gotten some pretty damn good results. Good power numbers, underrated defense, good baserunning, leadership, clutch hitting...all for under $5 mill? He's been pulling his weight just fine, thank you very much.

I was expecting sometime last April. Shows what I know

How's Hummel doing for Cinci(or their AAA team)?
-
I would as well. Mitre is probably no better then Diaz is or Diaz will be.
-
Games aren't meaningless till homefield has been clinched(with you obviously winning the division), or you are mathematically out of it. Period.

Overusing kills young prospects, just like yourself. It's sad. Sometimes it ruins prospects careers before they get started.

"Twins lead the league in steals - how many does LeCroy have?" (OK that one was only for the LeCroy thing) If you're artistic, you can draw a convertable car, and(assuming we are in first by a little bit)draw a Twins logo in the rear view mirror with the Sox logo driving the car, and as a caption, put "How does it feel?" And then of course..."Who wins in a footrace, Paul Konerko or Matt LeCroy?" Standup comedy, here I come
-
And we should have lost so many others already this year that we won. Don't stress over one loss where we should have won. It will happen throughout the year like that.
-
Dammit. Oh well. The sun will set today, rise tomorrow, and we will play ball once again. Get s*** done tomorrow.

Thank you Billy Koch

Atleast half my prediction came through

I can see Hawk now... "Jose at the plate and he hits a high one, and man, did just just get underneath that one. And Luis Rivas settles under this one around 2B, and we'll...."

I smell a Jamie Burke siting within the next 15 minutes(which means I also smell a big inning for the Sox here)
-
Not sure if anyone saw it, but I saw on ESPNEWS that Jorge Posada pisses on his hands too. And let the jokes begin

Koch has not done his job. His job is to get a 1-2-3 inning more often then not, and NOT make it close EVERY time. True, he has only blown a save or two this year, and he has 5 saves, and his K/9 is right around 9, which is a solid number, but his 5.40 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, K/BB of less then 2, while giving up 2 homers in 13.3 innings are less then stellar...in fact, they are less then mediocre. For $6 mill, those numbers should be 2.25 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, K/BB of 4 or 5, with 1 homer in 17 innings while having 10 saves. He can't friggin touch those numbers. As a very good comparison, let's bring up Armando Benetiz, who is closing for the Marlins. They signed him for $3 mill. He has 11 saves(and I believe has only blown 1, though that could be incorrect), has a sickening ERA of 0.48, and WHIP of 1.07, a K/BB of 3.4, a K/9 of right around 8.5 or so while having allowed 1 homer. Opponents have hit .224 off of him. And, once again, he is doing that for HALF of what Botch is making.

Wilson - C Olerud - 1B Boone - 2B Spiezio - 3B Aurlia - SS Ibanez - LF Winn - CF Ichiro - RF Edgar - DH Where in the hell are you going to put Jose?
-
I hope to God KW does not see it the way you see it. We need LH power in the lineup. Other then Jose, who hits for any power from the LH side of the plate? The answer is obviously no one and I have made my point. Jose brings much more to the table then what he puts up statistically. This is one of the examples where stats only give you half the story. The ONLY way I give up Jose is if I get a stud, and I mean absolute stud(Delgado/Helton/Thome-esque, not Everett/Burnitz-esque) in some other deal.
