  1. I'd say just prerank your players. If you don't prerank your players, then Yahoo will just select the players who are ranked the highest coming into the season....meaning you may end up with Trevor Hoffman as a RP or Paul Konerko as your 1Bman. That is not a good situation to have.
  2. And he's a cancer in the clubhouse too
  3. Collins had a career BA of .333. Fox's was around .290. There's a lot of guys who have a career average of .290. Not many have one in excess of .330. Collins also won 4 WS rings ('10, '11, '13 for PHA, and '17 for the Sox), and hit .328 in 34 career WS games. Fox hit .375, but only played in 6 games, and they lost the series ('59 to the Dodgers). Both are HOF'ers, but I think Collins gets the nod because he was a winner. If I'm thinking right here, this has more to do with how he played the game and not what his stats were. I have personally never seen Nellie play....because I was not around in the 50s and 60s...but IIRC, Nellie played the game with a passion...kind of like Eckstein does now(not that he should be on the Angels list....if he is....I guess it shows that the Angels have a weak history). He played with so much heart, that you just wanted to watch him. He rarely struck out, which is the right way to play, and he played good defense. He always had a big dip of tobacco in his front lip, and he was always smiling. Also....getting to a World Series is about the same as winning a World Series. One team wins, one team loses....that's all that matters. What it shows is that you were one of the two best teams in the league, and in the World Series, any team can win. Also....if you got to the World Series back then, you accomplished something. It shows that you had the best record in your league. There was only 1 division....and I'm sure you are aware of that. You got to the World Series and you are a winner, regardless of what you did in the World Series itself. If you look back at Greg Maddux's career, and I ask you if he is a winner, what would you say? I'd say he was a winner on a winning team....yet, he only has 1 ring, and he's gotten to the postseason 8 straight years(excluding 94, when there was no World Series). This is also during the time when the Yankees were a very dominant team, and there was a huge rivalry between the two teams. Also, IIRC, the Yanks and the A's were big trade buddies, and there were a ton of lobsided trades involving the two teams. It's hard to win when your opponent is, to an extent, cheating. So in my book, Nellie Fox is a winner. Collins also played in a time when the pitching was very, very weak. You saw guys hitting .400 during that time. He didn't have to deal with a slider or a knuckleball or a screwball or anything like that. He had to deal with a fastball, a changeup, and a spitball(breaking-ball). I'm sure those guys back then couldn't touch 95 or 100 MPH like in Nellie's time. You translate Collins's .330 to Nellie's time and I'm sure he hits about .290 or somewhere around there. Stats are only half the story. Just because you have good stats does not necessarily mean you are a great player. At the very least...Fox is a very good pinch-hitter on the All-Time team.
  4. If they give us Brian Giles too....sure, why the hell not? I for one do not want to trade for that s***bag Lofton and give up a lot of talent in the process, because Pittsburgh will look for a lot if they do in fact deal Lofton. Small salary, good numbers, last year of contract...they're not going to deal him for a bag of balls. They'd probably ask for Rauch and then some for Lofton. I am not trading Rauch, who could be a pretty good starter some day, for Lofton, who would be a rent-a-player. And to answer my question from above....no, we are not going to get Brian Giles. Rauch for Lofton? Lol. Who do they think they are, Billy Beane Apparently so. Thing is....some teams would be desperate enough for a "good" CFer that they'd actually make that move. I could definately see the Phillies, if they were desperate enough and thought that Lofton would push them over the top, could trade Marlon Byrd and a decent pitching prospect for Lofton. If we only had to give up like Ginter and Wunsch or something like that....then I'd do it. Low risk....at the very most, we are losing two good bullpen guys. It is easy as hell to find guys to replace them, especially in our system...we have a lot of good relievers. We aren't getting Lofton for Ginter and Wunsch.
  5. Rex, do you think that some of these guys can play other positions?

  7. It doesn't seem like an idea that is too terribly bad. People have made worse choices for uniforms(Indians red-on-red anyone?). And why is Giambi making a big deal of it anyways? He shouldn't be going with the numbers he has....what's he hitting, like .240 12 30? That's s***ty. If he were on the DRays, he wouldn't even be considered an all-star. And people wonder why the common fan hates the f***ing Yankees. If making the players wear one uniform for the game is such a big deal, Giambi should take a seat and should not play.
  8. Also....even though we as Sox fans say "it is still early" because we are playing like s***, you could also say that gaining a game means very little because "it is still early."
  9. Sounds like a blast. Man, that would be something.
  10. Winning Ugly....you've helped tremendously. Thank you. Also....I can't wait for your Worst for Best league to start....sounds like a good league.
  11. I don't know how the hell we scored 10 runs....but I'll take it. I would have never have guessed that we'd have beaten the best staff in the majors 10-3....not in my wildest dreams. Does anyone think that the championship cut out of the shirt thing has anything to do with this, or that this is just dumb luck? I'll tell you what I'm seeing....I'm seeing a guy in Frank Thomas who can carry a team when he gets hot, and I'm seeing good hitting spread all around the clubhouse....because everyone knows that good hitting is just as contagious as bad hitting. Season over? Far from it.
  12. An occassional thread about some other guy on some other team is OK....we do not need another forum on major league teams has a whole. It is just not necessary.
  13. Here's what I see for Helton... link Signed through 2011. As I said....I'd get whatever possible for Konerko
  14. Go ahead....it is a weird format. For details, just see the info in the commissioner's note and in the fantasy league forum. Let me warn you ahead of time....the league is fun as hell!
  15. Brando....I agree whole-heartedly. This team should be winning right now. We're getting good pitching from our 1-3, we are getting solid pitching from our 4 and 5 guys in the rotation, our bullpen, aside from Gordon and Glover, has been solid over the past month or so(even White has been somewhat decent)....it is just the offense is so damn pathetic.....it's terrible. If it comes down to it, a retooling may be in order. I don't think we need that. What we need are 2 things....a very good lefty bat in the middle of the order, and a good lead off hitter. I hate Kenny Lofton to death, but if he came up and the price were right, I would definately try to get him....though other teams do have an interest in him(I'd have to consider that one for a long time, and if he sucked, we'd look like douchebags). As far as a lefty power hitter goes, I'd look at Jeromy Burnitz in New York. He looks like he's starting to come to life, and he has some tremendous power. Also, Geoff Jenkins in Milwaukee has some decent power. Both strikeout a ton, but they bring some good power to the table. Brian Giles would be nice, as would Jim Edmonds....I'm not so sure they'd be available whether it be because their team is in contention(Cardinals) or because the price would simply be too damn high or the player doesn't want to come to Chicago(Pirates and Giles). If we could get Giles for Rauch, Garland, and Lee....I'd definately have to consider it(assuming Giles would waive his no-trade clause and assuming we could resign him). A package of Rauch, Garland, Lee, Harris, and Diaz for Giles and Lofton could possibly get it done. I'd also look at Ponson in Baltimore....maybe get him to replace Garland if Stewart or Ginter couldn't get it done. People must not realize how much time is actually left....if we want to win this year, I believe we could actually get it done. A move or two....and we are right back in it. Kind of like what Julio Cruz did for the Sox back in 83. That team was 38-35 at the break...and won 99 games. It is possible.
  16. I don't care what other teams are doing. That's why I am following the White Sox and not the major leagues. My name is witesoxfan for a reason....because I want to follow the White Sox....not the major leagues. I come here to read about the White Sox(Pale Hose Talke) and other crazy stuff that happens(Off Topic Board)....if I want to follow other stuff that is happening in the majors, I go to the fantasy sports or baseball section of Yahoo. If you want to follow the majors....join fantasy sports(as Bmr said). And to do that, you have to join my league(see sig below).
  17. Taking Valentin over Thomas would be like taking Cubs tickets over White Sox tickets(assuming of course you're a White Sox fan and both are playing s***ty/well). Thomas is a guy that when he gets going, not only can put up huge numbers, but can also carry a team with his bat alone. Valentin is a solid major leaguer who is mediocre all around....mediocre bat(decent power, no patience, strike-out prone, solid BA of about .250), and mediocre defense(good range, bad glove....erratic throwing, but a strong arm). If we traded Lee now....we'd need to get some very good talent in return. As SS2k3 said....a CFer or a SS. I'm not sure we could get one. We may as well keep him. Trade Konerko, and get whatever the hell we could get for him. Then resign Daubach, and promise him playing time. We'd have Thomas, Lee, and Daubach, and on a particular day, we could have Thomas DHing, Lee at 1B, and Daubach in LF, or we could have Thomas at 1B, Lee in LF, and Daubach DHing, or we could have Thomas at 1B, Daubach in LF, and Lee DHing, or we could have Thomas DHing, Lee in LF, and Daubach at 1B. Also....Maggs could get involved in this as well. If Maggs wants a day-off but is in the middle of a hot streak where he is ripping the cover off of the ball, have him DH, put Lee in LF and Daubach in RF with Thomas at 1B. Also....it's not like we couldn't have one guy sit out a game and then have someone else, say DJ, DH for a day when if we still want his bat in the lineup. That's kind of how a DH should work....not like what we and the Mariners have done, and made one guy a full-time DH. That's just not how it is supposed to work.
  18. They had the shift on for McGriff, so DJ was in shallow RF, and Jose was playing 2B. I thought it was DJ initially as well, and was surprised as hell by it....and then they clarified it, and I became less awestruck....because Jose can make those kinds of plays.
  19. Probably, but I want Backman.
  20. We get to watch Barry Bonds take Jon Garland deep about 3 times on Monday, and then watch him take Dan deep 2 times, and then Buehrle will walk him about 3 times while Santiago takes him deep about 2 times. How exciting!
  21. For all I care, it could have been Tom Gordon or Rick White....some guy who isn't even on the radar screen....someone you wouldnt think would do it. Then again, it could have been KW....or Maggs, or Thomas....or just about anyone. Hell, maybe it was Jas and Cali!
  22. Bostons minor league teams are bare, from what I understand. Meaning that if we did have a Colon for Sanchez package with minor leaguers involved, we'd be the ones giving up the minor leaguers. Screw that than. I'd really like to find a solid SS prospect for next year. D'Angelo Jimenez or Jose are not the answer. CWSOX45 If Jose makes the kind of play he made tonight about once every week or once every 2 weeks....I can personally handle his 25-30 errors a year, especially if he only wants about $3 mill(which at his age, may be all he wants). I'd definately take Jose back. I just figure he should bat LH at all times. Atleast then he'd have a shot in hell at hitting a LHP.
