Sox Draft Carlos Rodon> Draft Day Discussion Thread
witesoxfan replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
I would have my top 3 as Aiken-Rodon-Kolek, but my belief is that the Sox see it as Aiken-Rodon-Nola. I have absolutely no problem with that. -
There needs to be a name for Buehrle-type pitchers

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 11:24 PM) Who is an ace and how many teams have had them?? Shields, for example, is no more an ace than Buehrle. How many teams have aces? I guarantee you not many, or you could argue that many guys you might pick are not aces. Remember Cliff Lee? Some years he was an ace; some years he sucked. I contend there are not many clear cut aces in baseball since Buehrle emerged as a stellar pitcher. Cliff Lee's ERA per season, starting in 2008 2008 - 2.54 2009 - 3.22 2010 - 3.18 2011 - 2.40 2012 - 3.16 2013 - 2.87 2014 - 3.18 -

QUOTE (Brian @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 04:43 PM) He put up very lackluster games last year but because their defense is awesome, it wasn't as amplified. He started off slowly while he was a little banged up and his best receiver was out. Once Crabtree was back, he absolutely torched every defense that wasn't Seattle's. -

For the record, I don't mind that contract for a second. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 03:55 PM) I have a feeling every QB signed next few years will be "most paid ever". Cap is growing a lot and QBs are important. Also, lack of durability concerns with QBs. They are basically soaking up all money that went to RBs as well. Joe Flacco winning the Superbowl broke the game. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) I wonder what the guaranteed money looks like. $61 mill, most ever -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 12:38 PM) No, because he went after the trade deadline. Any player he was traded for was going to have to clear waivers, and top prospects arent gonna clear waivers. Once Rios didnt go before the July deadline, we knew that he wasnt going to command a big haul Only if they were/are on the 40 man roster at the time. If they are not, they do not have to clear waivers.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 12:23 PM) This core though to me is nowhere near the core they had in the early 90s with Thomas, Ventura, Guillen, One Dog, Raines, Cora, Karko, McDowell, Fernandez, Alvarez , Roberto Hernandez. Then they would sign rentals like Franco, DJ, Burks, even Tartabull was good his one season. Before he got ultra-conservate, even though that seemed to work out, Schueler did put up an impressive piece of work. Granted he started with a pretty nice core, but his additions, until he sent Black Jack packing, where usually really good. The '87-'90 drafts helped that a ton. There's drafting well and then there's flat out striking gold with everything you do for four straight drafts.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 12:04 PM) He's a solid acquaintence of mine. The guy was hilarious in the Progressive Boink days. I loved the Dugout. He revived it for a bit, but it was never quite the same.

Anyways, Marcell Dareus and Aldon Smith should pal up and see how many laws they can break together. -
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 12:14 PM) Tell us what the offers and counteroffers were. YOU are the one who believes the Sox could get more, so YOU provide the offers and counter offers.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 11:39 AM) I don't understand how this could be a conclusion. The Sox would have been in on Abreu regardless. I really don't care Rios is gone, and the return was meh, but that is what a guy with Rios' reputation and contract bring. Besides, if A. Garcia didn't get hurt, where would he play? But, the Sox offered real money to Tanaka. If Rios meant they couldn't sign anyone else, I don't know how they could have bid on him. There was always going to be money for Abreu. I agree with this entirely. Really, the only thing more you could have asked for out of Rios was a low minors guy, and you're not talking about Frank Montas here, who has a 100 MPH fastball and had semblance of command (it's been much better this year), but more along the lines of Keenyn Walker.

Remember when the Sox ruined Chris Sale by using him in the bullpen in 2011?

I have absolutely no problem with the return on Rios. He was 32 with another $15 mill or so guaranteed to him, he's always been an incredibly inconsistent player who has not always been seen as a great influence in or out of the clubhouse who the Sox no longer had room for on the roster. Garcia is is not much, I will agree on that, and getting the so called lottery pick included in the deal would have also been nice, but may not have been possible. Really, what more do you expect for a player like that?

I really hope they draft Jadaveon Clowney

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 10:26 AM) Rick Hahn has said in the past that he likes to evaluate after 60 games, which is fine. But in 2014, extend that now to 100 games. There are so many teams in "the blob". Every team is a 6-7 game winning streak from opening up a WC lead, or a 6-7 game losing streak from falling too far back. But we've seen the Red Sox lose 10 in a row, and then bounce right back too. There's a good chance that the trade deadline will be a huge snoozefest, which it usually is anyway. If it were up to me, the trade deadline would be the Wednesday with 6.5 weeks left in the season. Give teams a little more time to figure out what to do. I think the trade deadline should be August 31st.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 09:47 AM) Wite, you need to dig up the Wop logo. This is the best I can do, as a quick search doesn't pull up anything. Dickinson High School (also ND) is known as the Mighty Midgets. See? -
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 31, 2014 -> 04:56 PM) Saw my guy last night at the game and he hears Sanchez up sooner than you think at SS. Having just seen this now, I'm curious to know when your guy saw him. As of today, June 4th, 2014, Carlos Sanchez has played 44 games at 2B and 11 at SS this year. For his career, he's played 230 at 2B and 159 at SS. He's also played the previous 11 games at 2B with Tyler Saladino and Marcus Semien primarily playing SS over that time frame.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 09:17 AM) The problem is that if you fight to get the name changed, then you by definition are a Fighting Irish. The fighting Sioux got the Fighting Sioux changed, so you may be out of luck. -

There used to be a high school in North Dakota (many, many Germans and Scandinavians) whose mascot was the Wops. I had never heard anyone use that phrase, but it's still an incredibly derogatory name. They are now the Huskies. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 01:20 PM) A decade ago, the same NRA endorsed background checks that is has now declared evil. In a few years they'll be telling me why carrying an assault rifle into starbucks is a vitally important right. That is pretty empty and meaningless speculation.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 07:42 AM) Not referring to the HISTORICAL, fielding-only version of Escobar, but the .781 OPS, 15 doubles in 130+ ab's version. THIS year. Career-wise, he's at only .646, or basically what Gordon Beckham has produced the past 3 seasons, more or less. A slightly better version of Andy Gonzalez, maybe. But, if you honestly believe Saladino can come up this season and put up those numbers, then he should be starting somewhere in the White Sox line-up on a nearly everyday basis. Eduardo Escobar is a slap hitting utility player who has had a hot start for the Twins. He has not suddenly turned into a guy who is going to put up 60 doubles in a season. Making that assumption and/or comparison is like comparing Brent Lillibridge to Greg Colbrunn based on his 2011 season.
