QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 02:10 PM) I guess I have been talked off the ledge. I will not post concerning rodon until we signed him.... however I was wondering ....... does that mean I can't talk bad about borAss??? Boras is the best in the business at getting his clients paid, but he's a total douche who rarely, if ever, breeds goodwill with the companies with whom he works.

Garfein: Sox could trade Beckham for pitching

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 01:48 PM) Do you think we could get the Phillie Phanatic? Imagine how zany it would be if BOTH of them were wiggling their arms behind the plate during each game! That doesn't seem like a championship amount of TWTW. They need to revive the San Diego Chicken and bring him to Chicago. That's a championship caliber club right there. QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 01:48 PM) So would I, but Soria isn't a middle reliever. Sure he is, if you used him in the 7th inning. And he certainly was last year. Either way, he's a reliever. -

QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 01:42 PM) We'll probably trade him for a 30-year-old middle reliever. I would certainly take Joakim Soria for him, yes I would. -
I also agree in full with the previous 3 posts.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 12:59 PM) None of them have the answer either, yet they're in congress and the white house. Then they'd name the Capitol after me, Witeington.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 11:32 AM) Except Rios wasn't terrible two seasons in a row. And it has nothing to do with Leury Garcia's value, it's ONLY about money for Upton/Kemp/Joe Mauer, etc. Because we could obviously have Mauer if we assumed the rest of that contract as well. Rios had a 798 and 744 OPS in 2008 and then in 2009 with the Blue Jays. It wasn't until after he joined the White Sox in 2009 that he was really terrible (.530 OPS). Nobody in baseball would assume BJ Upton's contract today, any more than they would Adam Dunn's for the remainder of the season. KW was willing to take that risk on Rios' talent. Different situations. Plus, the Braves value Upton's presence for the value it provides to Justin. I honestly see absolutely no difference between BJ Upton and Alex Rios other than the fact that the Sox don't need to take a chance on that contract. There's also plenty of time for Upton to turn this season around (even though he hasn't been a terrible player, but he has been pretty poor with the bat).

Bulls make offer for KLove

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 11:27 AM) Love was 2nd to Noah in assists among bigs in the NBA last year, that doesn't sound like selfish player to me. They also ran an uptempo offense and we're constantly behind with plenty of talented shooters around him. This isn't Joakim Noah in a conservative offense with jack s*** for offensive talent around him. -
Seriously, any concern of Rodon not signing is completely unwarranted. There is a 99.999% chance he is signing.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 05:20 PM) Obama finally speaks today to Tumblr users. ... Obama asked about school shootings said ... “My biggest frustration so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage,” Obama said. “We’re the only developed country where this happens…It happens once a week. And it’s a one-day story.” The president said he is astonished that the Sandy Hook shooting a year and a half ago did not result in a change in gun laws. (A bill to strengthen background checks failed in the Senate last year.) “I have been in Washington for a while now and most things don’t surprise me. The fact that 20 6-year-olds were gunned down in the most violent fashion possible, and this town couldn’t do anything about it was stunning to me,” Obama said, referring to Washington, D.C. He added: “The country has to do some soul searching about this.” -- Yay! I approve of his statements! That is a total crock of s***. I hate nothing more than condescending people in power pointing fingers and saying "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT."

QUOTE (farmteam @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 05:23 PM) I think this is correct. Typically the law looks at "deadly weapons" contextually. Take a screwdriver. It has a perfectly legitimate intended purpose most of the time. But you could still kill someone with it, and in those instances it would be a "deadly weapon." I was also being allegorical in reference to guns as well. These situations are s***ty and the answer is not as simple as "more guns!" or "less guns!" or "no guns!" (because the last one is simply impossible since there are already guns in the US). If I had the answer, I'd probably be in Congress or the White House.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 10:09 AM) Danks has been hitting better lately as well. 6 HR over the last 7 days. In the (altered) infamous words of Lou Brown, "against guys who [should be] bagging groceries."

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 01:20 AM) Send DeAza down or release him and give Danks his final shot. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 01:24 AM) Yeah, I am thinking Danks has more upside then De Aza.. The grass is always greener. Jordan Danks may be a better base runner and defender, but he does not have the upside De Aza does. I know Sox fans are tired of De Aza and his struggles this year have made it difficult, but he is a guy that can put up a .270/.330/.400 line pretty easily. He is a 2 WAR player, an average MLB starter, with the upside of about a 3 WAR player. Jordan Danks might be a below average starter in the MLB. He has 4th outfielder written all over him. (normally, in a situation like this, I'd write the phrase "4th outfielder" all over a picture of Jordan Danks, but I digress)

QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 05:16 PM) going the independent route is 1 yr and then he is a fa. signing for whomever offer the most money. This is incorrect. Aaron Crow went this route and likely cost himself money. I'm guessing you have to be something like 25 or 26 before you can bypass the draft (and that may not even be true); otherwise, you will be subject to being drafted every single season, at which point you either sign a contract or forgo your right to play in the MLB (and affiliated MiLB teams) for that calendar year. If you are an amateur player, you will be subjected to the draft every single year.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 05:15 PM) I wouldn't object to BJ Upton, however he's been dead for 2 years now and his corpse has put up a -1.0 WAR since it signed with ATL. Not sure I want that. -0.1 WAR. Alex Rios also put up a -1.1 WAR when he was 30. And all you asked me to do was find one guy who could put up a 2-5 WAR for whom the Sox could trade for using Leury Garcia. I have responded. I win.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 12:08 PM) Great so let's see Hahn go ahead and trade Leury Garcia for a 2-5 WAR player that can help us in the OF, rotation, bullpen, or as a starter in the IF. Seriously, let's see him do that. Seriously. Do it. Now. BJ Upton for Leury Garcia (I want to note that I do not approve of the above trade for any number of reasons, but to suggest that BJ Upton is not a 2-5 WAR player who would help the White Sox win ball games is false)

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) This question has come up, here you go. Jim Callis @jimcallisMLB 1h No. Separate college scholarship plan. @JerryMitcham: is cost of tuition taken from team's pool when included in signing bonus? @MLBDraft Honestly, for a lot of the high school kids that get drafted, you almost have to think that a $200-300k guaranteed contract plus the guarantee of funding for a college education makes it worth it to sign.
-
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 11:55 AM) Nobody was going to give anything for Rios there is a reason he was on waivers in the first place. Sox were lucky to even get Leury for him. Teams aren't gullible anymore there is no reason to pay Alex Rios 15 times what you could pay a rookie or even AAAA player. Rios is a 1-3 WAR player right now at best. Semantics, but I'd say he's a 2-5 WAR player. Still, the point remains valid.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) Which is kind of the point...there's no way to determine it. Or maybe it was not having Matt Thornton getting lit up like a Christmas tree? FWIW, Erik Johnson basically pitched as well as or better than Peavy down the stretch, etc. So now you've admitted that others had a huge effect too, and a lot of other players picked up their performance. Why do you not find it reasonable that the team would have played better with a better player down the stretch?

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 10:12 AM) Excited to see Miyamotos 2 new IPs. Also first Star Fox game developed by Nintendo in 17 years so hopefully they have big plans for it. A StarFox game would almost make me need to buy a WiiU too for mere nostalgia. DO A BARREL ROLL.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 09:45 AM) But they didn't. You really don't think it's human nature to try harder to impress new teammates, especially when you're going from one of the three worst teams in the majors (with perhaps the most negative attitude/mindset of any Sox team in recent memory, and the most mental mistakes) to one of the best franchises in recent MLB history? Fair enough. What do Rock Raines and bucket think about this specific question? There's no way I'm going to be convinced we would have won more games with Rios still around. We can look at their record before he left the team (.377) and afterwards (.417) and that's just as compelling as virtually identical OPS numbers. You can believe what you want to believe. If you believe in the Great Dijon God, that's your prerogative, but I'm going to use the quantifiable information I have on hand to help show that Alex Rios was a better player down the stretch than Avisail Garcia and, using deduction, will infer that the White Sox were a worse team. Just because their winning percentage was better than when Rios was there does not mean they were a better team with him off the roster, unless you want to look at a similar sample size of John Ely and assume he was the best pitcher on the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010. Other people could have and did get hot - compare Dunn's numbers while Rios was on the Sox in 2013 versus when Garcia was on the Sox. It's a big, big difference. There are others I'm sure you can look at during those time frames too.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) Why are we so high on Danish again? Because he's got an electric arm who throws a ton of ground balls and has enough stuff to strike people out. Right now, people assume he's a starting pitcher. If he ends up being a reliever, he'll fall down these lists but he can still be a valuable piece.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 09:32 AM) But there's no way to quantify what affect his mood/attitude had on the clubhouse. White Sox before Rios trade (43-71, .377 winning percentage) After Alex Rios trade (Aug 9)...finished 20-28, for a .417 winning percentage. If you extrapolate the team's record with Rios, they would have been expected to finish 61-101. That he played BETTER for the Rangers, in your opinion, doesn't mean he would have put up those same exact numbers (especially 16/17 in stolen bases) in Chicago for the final 6-7 weeks. But I'm using what I do know, which says that Alex Rios was a better baseball player down the stretch. If you want, you can speculate that because Alex Rios was dining with both the wives of Dunn and Ramirez while also getting cotton candy for Viciedo's family but not De Aza's while consistently getting the right chewing tobacco for Mark Parent but always getting the wrong bubble gum for Robin Ventura, he was causing problems in the clubhouse, but there is absolutely no way to quantify those numbers so why are you even trying? It never seemed like Rios caused problems with his attitude in Chicago other than the occasional lack of hustle, and the team damn near won the division twice when he was with the White Sox.
