  1. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ May 30, 2011 -> 10:46 PM) Indians are 4-6 in their last 10. Downward Spiral. Jesus, 4-6 is a good f***ing stretch from the White Sox, and it's the beginning of the end for the Indians.
  2. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 30, 2011 -> 04:14 PM) Balta called this, this past winter. Oh, and my dad was wondering why in March when things started to thaw and they knew how much snow melt was to come why they didn't gradually increase the flow of the river during that time frame. It seems that they just let it go and now it's going to have its way with several communities along the way.
  3. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 30, 2011 -> 03:58 PM) Is this as bad as it was two years ago? Or worse? Best of luck - hopefully all the hard work will keep your home safe. Way worse than it was two years ago. As far as I can tell, two years ago it was water in the streets and storm drains backing up. This is going to do some serious damage to homes all along the river.
  4. Working? I will be shortly. I will not be paid for it.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 30, 2011 -> 08:56 AM) Why exactly does Hahn deserve a chance? Because he's supposedly more from the sabremetrics/statistical field of analysis? I remember a lot of people wanted Dan Evans to become the GM of the Sox and that obviously wasn't meant to be, KW actually got us to the World Series. Hahn has been with the White Sox for 10 years, has shown the ability to deal with Scott Boras (which is more than anyone else in the White Sox organization can say), does deal with advanced statistics and goes about looking for creative ways to build teams. I have no reason to base this next statement other than sheer feeling, but I believe he would rebuild the farm system and try to keep that somewhat stocked at all times. He wants to win, but he always wants to run a successful business, and part of that is proper spending and resource allocation. I also think he'd get away from the stolen base and small ball, which would make everyone here about a thousand times happier. Oh, and Dan Evans built the Dodgers farm system up pretty damn well. He certainly wasn't a great GM, but there have been several GMs who have been worse than him recently. I'd like to know why you'd believe he'd be a "loyal footsoldier." I'm certain he wouldn't make any moves that he was advised not to make - that applies to any person in America who values their employment. I am just generally confused as to what you mean by "loyal footsoldier." Will he not spend overslot for draft picks? If that's what the man upstairs wants, then what choice does he have? I just seriously don't understand. It'll come. I think the Sox at this point are still cleaning up their mess a bit and they're waiting for the rest of it to be cleaned up too, as I seem to recall reading that there's a lot of shady stuff going on down there. They're building ties within though and I think within the next 5 years you'll see them relevant in the Dominican again. And, as far as I'm aware, they're one of the few teams in Brazil. The first two have been relative busts - not that there was any expectation on them to begin with - but Rienzo looks like a good prospect. Are you somehow suggesting that a GM can't make a bad move? There were a lot of reasons to like both the Teahen trade and resigning. There were also a lot of reasons to hate it. Those that hated it have been justified. The same can be said for the Adam Dunn signing as well as pretty much the entirety of the 2005 offseason. Much of GMing is a guessing game. As for the reasons, I've listed the ones I did already. Here's this too.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 30, 2011 -> 07:26 AM) This isn't luck when it happens year after year. Its a credit to the training staff and to the coaches running things. And the pitching coaches for teaching and maintaining proper pitching mechanics.
  7. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ May 29, 2011 -> 02:06 PM) Based on what? He has gotten no better the last three years and really struggles with his control. His average innings per start is 6. Thus he is a 6 inning pitcher a nice #3 and solid #4. Based on the fact that he was a #1 starter from 2008 through 2010.
  8. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 30, 2011 -> 02:46 AM) http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/videos/vide...47cry4hr42v83Vs Heh, Tim Donaghy. No, stars are allowed 4 steps and superstars are allowed 5. That's a perfectly legal play.
  9. In my eyes, the Sox have till the All Star break to make their move. It makes no sense to tear down the team at this point in time. They can either go on a tear and get back into the race, which is a good thing; they can play well and get somewhat back into the race, which isn't a bad thing but not necessarily good either, and then, once they lose a ton of money, can start trading players and letting free agents go in the offseason. They can tread water, which leaves them double digits out of 1st still which would be cause for a sale. They can play terribly and be worse than they are now which most certainly is cause for a sale. If the team fails, they have a month to trade people off...there's no rush. That doesn't mean that they don't make a change now. I get Viciedo up here and get his bat in the lineup every single day because that type of production could be just the spark the Sox need to get back into the race. You also consider canning Ozzie and/or Walker and going from there. Oh, and if the 3rd or 4th scenario plays out, I ask Williams to resign or fire him if need be before the sell off and let Hahn take over the GM duties on an interim basis with intentions of making him the full time GM because I think Hahn deserves a chance.
  10. Pierre's newspaper has a Flickr that can be followed as well. It's a bit scary seeing the water where it's at, knowing full well that it's going to rise way, way beyond that. http://www.flickr.com/photos/capitaljournal/ Gov Dennis Daugaard is going to have constant updates on the flooding in South Dakota - http://twitter.com/#!/sdgovdaugaard This is a TV station within Bismarck/Mandan that is going to have constant updates too. http://www.kxnet.com/?setCity=bis& oh, and apparently not 75,000 but 80,000 CFS currently in the Missouri River
  11. Here's an article describing some of it with an image of the Oahe Dam near Pierre/Ft. Pierre http://www.argusleader.com/article/2011053...e-river-s-wrath
  12. Scary times in the upper midwest right now. Due to record snowfalls and the subsequent snow melts in eastern Montana as well as the continuing snowfalls and rains from here on out, the Missouri River will continue to rise. Currently, it's only coming down stream at like 75,000 cubic feet per second and the water is already pretty high, and that will increase to 120,000 on Thursday and possibly up to 150,000 at some point down the line. If it gets to 150,000, the water level is expected to reach 23 feet. Our garage gets water at 21 feet. So, in the next couple days that I have off from work, we will be building a 2 foot sandbag wall around our house in hopes of preventing any of the water from seeping to the house. Fun, fun, fun. It's possible that the rate of the current will actually scour the river floor and shore, so it may not get up to 23 feet, but that creates its own set of problems as well - possible homes being washed away, though I think that's absolutely worst case scenario. The second problem that occurs is, even if the flooding doesn't reach our neighborhood, the storm drains are currently shut to prevent any further flooding in the area. If we get a heavy rain, we'll encounter flooding due to that as well because none of the precipitation will be able to go anywhere. I do believe they have some pumps set up to hopefully divert much of that stuff away from the area, but it wont change the fact that there will certainly be areas of standing water everywhere. Pierre and Fort Pierre are going to have it much worse. Bismarck is used to having about 60,000 CFS come through at pretty much all times, so while this increase will cause flooding, it shouldn't effect the greater Bismarck area but instead only a few homes that are along the river. The flooding in Pierre could possibly reach halfway into the town and cause a ton of damage to many of the hotels around the area, including the nicest hotel in town which naturally is on the river. Fort Pierre has it worse than that because 90% of the town is at the same elevation, which is just above the level of the river. All I can ask of you guys is that you pray. It's a bit surreal, seeing a dry backyard and dry surrounding areas and knowing that in 2 weeks, all of this s*** could be completely underwater. It's not much fun and it's more than a bit scary.
  13. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ May 29, 2011 -> 01:37 PM) Danks does not have the control of his pitches and is a solid #3 or #4 because of it. Edwin Jackson is a solid 3 or 4. Danks is way better than that.
  14. Tony Pena is the worst reliever since Rojo Johnson. And atleast Rojo had some personality.
  15. QUOTE (qwerty @ May 27, 2011 -> 02:29 AM) I have been on this board hundreds of time... just me... no users... no guests... eerie in a way. Generally this in the case between 3:45 and 5:15am. Shortly there after things start getting back into motion. Pale hose talk has got to be one of the very worst little sections in all of the internet. If it's not on a list currently... well it should be. All it seems i read over there is one vacuous thought after another. I couldn't think up these harebrained thoughts if i tried. Unreal. Though i must say the nba thread, as per usual, is still the same laughing stock it has nearly always been. Pretty certain most post in there without knowledge of what a basketball is... let alone the game of basketball. I very well could be entirely wrong, and if that is somehow the case, boy have i been fooled. However, this seems doubtful. Now i may sound bitter, and that is indeed factual. Reason being? I want to talk some white sox dammit, and i'm rarely given the chance to. Heads need to roll. Why you be telling Heads to roll? Oh I get it, because HE'S ON FIRE
  16. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 26, 2011 -> 07:33 PM) A minor leaguer with the Mets hit into a 3-2-6-1-5-3-2-6-8 double play Why'd the centerfielder have to get involved? Pitcher get tired or something? Trip and fall?
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 26, 2011 -> 04:57 AM) Yes, otherwise we'd just sign Willie Mays Hays, Bullet Bob Hayes, Renaldo Nehemiah, Michael Johnson, Usain Bolt and Joey Gathright. Still, when he was drafted, I had the feeling that he was looked at as the heir apparent in LF for Pierre and a future leadoff hitter/igniter in the Crawford mode. You know how Ozzie loves the 30+ SB type guys. I think he will steal eventually once he gains confidence with the bat. Get him going offensively before you try to mess with his game. Relatively speaking, it doesn't take long to learn how to steal bases. Shane Victorino worked with Davey Lopes, who is one of the best in the game, but he went from bad to good in about a year's time.
  18. I was going to suggest not being able to launch yourself at the catcher, similar to what Cousins did last year, especially since no pads are being worn, but I don't know that that's a good fix either. It's a tough call any way you look at it.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 26, 2011 -> 02:36 AM) Noticed that he only has 4 SB and 4 CS. Is he not 100% confident yet with his ankle or he simply hasn't learned basestealing techniques (ala Willie Harris)? Pretty unusual for someone that athletic in A ball not to have at least 8-10 steals at this point in the season. He's probably still getting his feet under him. I'm more concerned with his bat at this point, and I think and hope the Sox are too.
  20. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 25, 2011 -> 05:06 PM) J4L rule #1: Juan Pierre is to never be complimented. Even on the rare occasion he does something positive. Rule #2: Make fun of and mock Wite at all times. Rule #3: Don't use words I don't know the meaning of. I've never heard that word in my life. I do not believe you are following numbers 1 and 2 very closely.
  21. QUOTE (Paint it Black @ May 25, 2011 -> 10:17 PM) So wait, power hitters who strike out a lot and don't walk are needed on this team? They are needed a hell of a lot more than hitters who ground out a lot and don't walk.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 25, 2011 -> 02:17 PM) Yes but it's not the same. A lot of people on Soxtalk want to DFA Pierre, Pena. How often does that happen when a guy is making good money? Actually, pretty often, especially when a player is in the last year of their deal.
  23. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 25, 2011 -> 01:00 PM) Fine, teh Cubs suck. Pretty sure I said that already, if not here in another thread. The Sox have been just as bad with money this year as the Cubs and Mets. Wite, I respect the hell out of you as a poster, but you really can't let a small thing go, hell you corrected me in the "I am drunk" thread. For Christ's sake, there are still a hundred games to go. It's entirely possible that Cleveland is at or below .500 2 months from now too and that the Sox are winning the division, and then the Sox could still easily blow it. And, it's a matter of opinion, but I'd say the Cubs and Mets have both been terrible. And that correction was more about goofing around, I didn't mean anything serious by it whatsoever.
  24. QUOTE (ptatc @ May 25, 2011 -> 09:09 AM) that's true. Winning means nothing in baseball. The teams with the best OPS, OBP, strikeouts and UZR make the playoffs. Not actual wins. Wins for pitchers. Tony Pena should not have won that game, whatever that really means. Carlos Quentin should get the win for last night's game. Honestly, if you want to keep track of wins of some type, what they should start doing is giving wins and losses out to all players based on WPA, both positive and negative. Those with the largest WPA for the winning team will be given a win and those with the largest negative WPA for the losing team will be credited with the loss. You keep track of every time a player has a WPA added of 0.25 and 0.5. It'd be awesome.
  25. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 25, 2011 -> 08:46 AM) Specifically this year, nope. Well then the Cubs sure as hell can't point to Albert Pujols leading the Cardinals to anything.
