  1. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 04:16 PM) This is actually a plus to the whole "it's our year" thing. Sucks for him, though. Pretty much this. He was already going through a big time transition period and this is going to delay that even further.
  2. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 04:02 PM) I hope he clears them too, but I'm not counting on it. De Aza is unfortunately our best option. Andruw Jones homered off of Duensing and doubled off of Liriano. He did similar things last year too. Would have been nice to have him back this year while still bringing in Milledge on the MLC. Then Andruw is on the team and Milledge is in Charlotte to begin the year. That would have created an entirely different problem later on, but oh well.
  3. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 04:22 PM) And this wouldn't shock me. As I said before the season, I can see Edwin becoming our ace this season or being a bottom of the rotation starter. Today was about as good of a start as there has been in the majors this season but 2 games certainly isn't going to convince me that he's an ace yet. I hope he's figured it out(and I'm leaning towards thinking that he has) and if he has, than yes he's going to make a big difference in not only helping win the division hopefully but making some noise in October but like I said, I need to see some consistency from him. I tend to think he has figured it out too, because last year he really only had one bad start when he was with the Sox, otherwise he's been dynamite. He's still going to be a question mark until he proves he can keep it up.
  4. QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 04:14 PM) No, that's not it. Don't get me wrong; some people think me to only point out faults and not give credit. Trust me, I HAVE given Walker/Ozzie credit for things in the past and still do... it's just that, to be realistic, it's easier to be observant and vocal about negatives than positives. Sad, but true. No I agree completely, it's very easy to look at the faults behind anything instead of focusing on the positives. I just don't think those faults, at this point in time, justify getting rid of Walker (obviously not right now, and probably not in the near future either). I also think the players like him, which improves clubhouse chemistry. That's always an issue that comes up from those people who preach intangibles - and I am not one of them - but just as in an office setting, it's going to be easier to perform on the field if you enjoy being there.
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 04:08 PM) Ya I'm not expecting much from him after that surgery which limits his slider (which was his best pitch, think Liriano like) but hopefully he keeps developing that change-up. He could be useful down the line. Perhaps they can just use the Felix rule with Griffith...don't let him throw the slider. It would make him work that much harder on the change, and if he doesn't completely lose the slider, it may make him into a dangerous pitcher down the road.
  6. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 04:04 PM) Not to be a downer but that trade is still quite the loss for us. I absolutely agree, but I tend to struggle to look at the Sox in the same light if they had Hudson in the rotation compared to Jackson. Jackson could end up being worth 2 more wins overall than Hudson, and that could be what separates the Sox from winning the division and finishing in second.
  7. QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:58 PM) No, no. It's not that I believe Walker preaches it. It's that I question whether he sees it going on and says/does anything about it since it has gone on for years. Granted, my biggest gripe is how dumb they are on the basepaths and that obviously isn't Walker's fault. Know what's funny? I'm generally hands-down one of the most optomistic guys on this board. If I see a problem I'll comment on it, but this Walker thing has been on my mind after NUMEROUS seasons; I'm not gonna come on here and declare "corpseball," "this.team.is.dead.," "the bullpen is gonna hold us back," etc. because it's far too early to be making any sort of movement to the edge. That stuff IMO is just SILLY. I don't know how you can fault Walker at all for anything last year; if anything, I give him credit for helping a team that had relatively no talent offensively into a middle of the pack offense. It's like you are suggesting that he had nothing to do with Rios' surge in the first half, Pierzynski and Beckham's second halves, or Konerko's entire year, yet had everything to do with Omar Vizquel and Juan Pierre putting up mid .600 OPS's. I have no qualms with Greg Walker at all. I don't think that you should either, but I will let you keep them if you so please.
  8. QUOTE (peanut33tillman @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:38 PM) Rack rack rack em rack em (rack em willie) Rest in Peace Rack Em Willie
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:53 PM) He's a 34 year old catcher. It's to be expected. He'll be hitting 8th or 9th soon, and I'd still rather have him in there than Flowers or the handful of crap free agents that were available this offseason. Buuuut I might prefer Ramon Castro over AJ Pierzynski.
  10. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:37 PM) Eh erhm..... And I highly doubt he clears waivers. He CHOOSE the Sox. He had other offers. After that spring he put him, I'd be surprised if someone doesn't put in a claim. Fielding is different from pitching. You could watch me for one inning and know that I was clueless in the outfield. And yet, I did mention that if he went to Charlotte and played everyday, which he has no chance of doing in Chicago, he'd get to play in the outfield regularly to improve or, at the very least, look better. If he doesn't clear waivers, it's not a huge loss. I think he will, he'll go to Charlotte, and he'll be back up at some point later this year.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 02:58 PM) Co-ed softball shallow? Like quite literally that shallow. He was maybe playing 15-20 yards behind Brignac at the start of the play. It landed in left field right over Brignac's head and Fuld picked it up on one or two hops.
  12. I have never seen a left fielder playing that shallow. That was ridiculous.
  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 02:48 PM) Lillibridge with a hit. May as well run him here. Doubtful that Pierre gets a double in consecutive days and that's what it'll take to score Lillbridge. If he steals it, then a single scores him, and if not, you have Pierre leadoff the next inning. Hey hey, I was right.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 02:45 PM) Like most things with Jenks, it won't stay clean for long. Haha, ouch
  15. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 02:42 PM) Jenks is doing well for them though I'm so happy that he's thrown f***ing 2 clean innings
  16. The Sox are terrible. The Red Sox that is. The White Sox took 2 of 3 from Cleveland; the Red Sox got swept. Hahahahahahaha
  17. Jackson has video game stuff right now. Tampa just has no chance. Oh, and Mark Gonzales is 70. That's f***ing whack.
  18. When did Beckham switch back to "Your Love?" It's just so awesome.
  19. Works great. Works better when others are in there. Talking to myself is no fun.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 12:26 PM) Stat of the day from ESPN... http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor...ce=MLBHeadlines That's awesome. That's actually my father's and my boyhood idols and #1 and #2. That's a hell of a coincidence.
  21. Damn, tensions are beginning to boil. Odds are very good that Milledge clears waivers. He still has a reputation of a problem child, and he has looked absolutely brutal in the field. There is also undoubtedly going to be thought that, if he leaves the Sox organization, a place where he has seemingly been happy for the past 2 months, he is going to throw a fit and cause a ruckus on the opposing team. Anybody who claimed him would have to either keep him on their roster, which I doubt would happen, or they'd have to send him through waivers, at which point I imagine the Sox would put a claim in for him again, and they will continue to play waiver tag until Lastings ends up in Charlotte. If he plays in Charlotte, he'll atleast get to play the outfield everyday. If he hasn't figure out how to catch a flyball yet, he's never going to, but atleast in Charlotte he'll get regular opportunities to do so. Perhaps when he comes up the next time, he won't look like an 8 year old, which is to say that he is scared but willing to make the play, kind of half sticking his arm out hoping it falls into his glove.
  22. QUOTE (hawksfan61 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 07:08 AM) I am not as confident they will work it out enough to make the playoffs. Once the weather heats up they will start clubbing teams to death but their rotation is very weak after Lester. If the Beckett and Lackey of last year show up again this year they are in a lot of trouble. I never understood spending all that money on Carl Crawford, they should have used that money and spent it on Lee. I wouldn't call Lackey a weak pitcher, and Buchholz is pretty damn good too. And it's not like they don't have the minor league depth to go out and acquire a pitcher if they need one.
  23. Jesus, you'd think the White Sox just released their #1 prospect.
  24. I'm sort of excited for Nevin Griffith. The numbers tell me I shouldn't be that excited, but I can't help but like having a 22 year old in AA who might actually have some promise. It's also a big step for Brandon Short. If he proves he can handle AA, he cements his status as a legitimate prospect. Definitely going to have to either continue hitting for power or improve his contact skills, because that .372 BABIP won't last.
  25. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Apr 6, 2011 -> 11:04 PM) Isn't that only true for outcomes with a fixed probability? QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 6, 2011 -> 11:12 PM) Yes. Baseball is completely different than a roulette wheel, or throwing die, or flipping a coin, etc. To be fair though, there is pretty close to fixed probability in baseball, especially this early in the season. You factor in the talent on the field, the quality of the managing, the bounces balls get, and whatever other variables you can throw in there and things even out pretty quickly. I would say that the gambler's fallacy holds true here. The Rays are just as likely to get a win as they were before the losing streak each single game. They are going to be pumped to try and end their losing streak, but the Sox are going to be pumped because it's their home opener. Both teams have plenty of motivation to win all the games. You obviously want a sweep, but I would be extremely happy with 3 of 4 and would be fine if they went 2-2.
