Ben Revere to the Nationals
Dan Jennings (the GM/manager not Sox LHP) to the Nats too, Anthopolous to Dodgers... Fwiw, Pompey, Saunders and Bautista seems a bit suspect. The Blue Jays just announced Revere was going to be their leadoff guy last week. Interesting. Where are the Blue Jays payroll-wise?

Guilty Plea in Cards hacking of Astros case
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mlb-must-hamm...-005253782.html Passan wants the Cards to be absolutely hammered by MLB...but argues ownership might be influential enough to protect the franchise.

And Parra...and Jackson. And a whole slew of possible trade candidates.

Trade targets: who is available and at what cost?
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 09:21 PM) But Pedro Alvarez will not get a rebuilding Brewers team out from under 90M in salary commitments over the next five years. This based on the idea the Brewers would be interested in trading Braun in the first place which is what were talking about. Sure, if the Brewers, Reds, Rockies and Braves are in such desperate financial straits they starting selling off assets for 50 cents on the dollar....then it becomes interesting. Milwaukee is a strong revenue machine since the new stadium...even with disappointing teams.

Cespedes Re-signs with the Mets
Well, we know what happened with the White Sox, Padres and Red Sox last year... The question is which GM's aren't playing the market well? A lot will argue the Cards for overpaying Leake and "losing" Heyward, the Dodgers, maybe the Jays for overpaying on their starting pitching. Are the DBacks and Cubs early winners of the offseason or fools? For example, the Twins haven't been mentioned once. Or the Indians, who have been rumored to be dangling Carrasco, Salazar and perhaps Bauer on the market...are the Rockies being too patient not trading one of their outfielders? Are the Orioles going to end up with neither Davis nor Upton/Cespedes and really frustrate their fans?

Trade targets: who is available and at what cost?
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 03:00 PM) MLB is swimming in revenue. They are a money making machine right now. As Tom Verducci pointed out in S.I. MLB's revenue is up 102% from 15 years ago. Before he left 'Proud to be your Bud' Selig said MLB was now a nine Billion dollar a year industry. Any team crying "poor" is lying through their teeth. Trade targets: who is available and at what cost?
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 09:02 PM) I would take on the contract if it meant the Sox could unload LaRoche and limit the prospect quality the Brewers would seek in return, iow, they can't have Anderson or Fulmer. They just signed Carter for $2.5 million and incentives. Pedro Alvarez is still out there. LaRoche is stuck for better or worse.

Financial News
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 12:19 PM) Thanks for the info. It's not really something that important. It was just a topic of discussion we had and when I saw the posted information, it picqued my interest. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/stocks-tumbl...-210104458.html This is a helpful article dissecting it.

Cespedes Re-signs with the Mets
Possibly NY if they deal Gardner or Ellsbury... Rangers but only on a shorter-term deal.

Guilty Plea in Cards hacking of Astros case
"Chris Correa, 35, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Houston to five counts of unauthorized access to a protected computer. As part of his plea, he admitted accessing the accounts of three Houston Astros employees, including information about prospects, Astros scouting reports and trade discussions. He also admitted taking measures to conceal his identity and the location of his computer and admitted that the "intended loss" for all of the hacking was about $1.7 million." Here's the detailed story from the Post Dispatch... http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/pr...72308a8095.html Each conviction of unauthorized access of a protected computer carries a maximum possible sentence of five years (up to 25 years total) in federal prison and a possible $250,000 fine. Correa will pay $275,000 in restitution as well. The value of the information that Correa gained unauthorized access has been set at $1.7 million. Federal attorneys said they came to the $1.7 million figure based on the Astros’ scouting budget and the number of players included in the database. http://blog.chron.com/ultimateastros/2016/...n-hacking-case/

Sox interested in Carlos Gonzalez
QUOTE (coco1997 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 05:28 PM) Wouldn't be the first time the Sox acquired an alleged wife beater. Remember Brett Myers? That was one half season as opposed to a four year commitment. Wil Cordero and D'Angelo Jimenez came with flashing warning signs as well...Albert Belle, etc. Probably not the best marketing moves from the standpoint of the female portion of the fanbase...yeah yeah, doesn't get in the way of the NFL's profits machine. Always the counterargument.

Sox interested in Carlos Gonzalez
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 05:21 PM) Yep. I'll take one year of LaRoche at 13M and hope for the best instead 2 years 48M of Reyes wife abusing ass. Absolutely agree! Apparently they have the inside scoop to White Sox finances or JR is playing with Monopoly money. This is equally likely. Raymond Reddington pilfered the new $100 bill printing plates and paid back JR for a past favor.

Cespedes Re-signs with the Mets
This might be another case of the typical big spending field clearing nicely like with Abreu but still a long way to go.
-
Sox interested in Carlos Gonzalez
These moves except Reyes sound great but there has to be a payroll amount they won't exceed prior to the season. Dumping top prospects to get rid of LaRoche isn't preferable. We did something similar before to offload Teahen, sacrificing an asset that could have brought a quality return in Edwin Jackson at that time. Except Tim has even more value by far. If Anderson achieves his potential, you're losing 15-25 affordable future war at a key position just to save money this year, and Colorado would have no use for Adam anyway.

**2016 Films Thread**
The movie dragged a bit from the two very exciting action sequences in the first 20-30 minutes...to the set up of the last two hours. I thought it was an excellent film, epecially the cinematography, but not ready to give it best picture. Previous films like Dances With Wolves and then also a number of revenge/vengeance-seeking themed ones just resonate a bit more imo, but it's definitely a movie you should try to see in the theatre. It's likely the best shot for Leo's first Oscar.... https://www.yahoo.com/movies/2016-golden-gl...-153016723.html Golden Globes predictions... The Martian and the Big Short aren't your typical comedies...but not a huge Schumer fan, either.

What is the Sox fall back OF plan ?
We can have Ryan Braun...so there's that.

Financial News
Everyone suspects the government was actually doing most of the buying here...although the volumes were quite high. Shanghai has a bunch of individual day trader types who haven't experienced five rough markets in their lifetime (1987, 1997-98 leading into the tech crash, 20012002 and then 2008-09). Plus, they locked out big insiders and institutional holders from trading more than 1% in the next three months...punting the problem of uncertainty down the line again. Even then, you have to write a letter 15 days in advance announcing your intentions to sell. Meanwhile, any mention of short selling or hedging gets the rich brought into investigation for being traitors to their country by selling/betting against the market or media members brought up on charges. Then there's the whole anti-corruption witch hunt going on here as well. People are scared and want to get their money out in any possible way asap. It's crazy.

Cespedes Re-signs with the Mets
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 11:21 AM) Agreed, which is ironic because in past years, people blamed KW for going after the big names. And rightfully so, to some extent, because 2004-2005....the biggest name guys we added were really El Duque and Garcia. Subtracting bigger, more expensive names like Magglio and Carlos Lee. And then Dunn, Peavy and Rios, to name a few.

Cespedes Re-signs with the Mets
Hahn=brilliant moves for Lawrie and Frazier KW and spendthrift JR=directly responsible for not getting any of the bigger targets remaining on the board

Giants to sign Denard Span, 3yrs 31 mil
Considering he originally wanted three years and $40-50 million, the actual 3/$35 (with buyout) is about the same percentage lower compared to original expectations Gordon accepted. Both older/more experienced players, both coming off major injuries that dampened their values a bit...more wear and tear in the past in terms of career games played as a risk factor in the nearer future. That said, Gordon has one of the toughest diet and physical training regimens possible.

Cespedes Re-signs with the Mets
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 10:59 AM) Everyone was so pissed at RH for sticking to his plan of no deals longer then 3 years and convinced that the sox had no chance. Now the agents are going to the other extrme .RH is going to try to work the giving up a pick angle to bring the offer up from 1 year to suit the team better. It may not work but RH is really working the market well with few teams involved. How does anyone possibly know whether that last sentence is true or not...? That's the problem, this whole thread is conjecture, right? What do we know factually that 100% can't be debated? Only if the White Sox can get one of them signed somehow? Sure, it makes sense if each player only has a couple of options to choose from...but that's quite difficult to believe.
