The 2004-2005 White Sox. That started out with basically a "false positive" 100ish win team in 2000 and the #1 farm system in the world simultaneously. The prospects mostly failed, but the FA moves combined with Buehrle/Rowand/Crede/Garland/Jenks were enough to push them over the top with the additions of Garcia/Contreras to the roation.

DeJong really solid the last 2-3 weeks. Better try to trade him earlier rather than later, if there's a possible match. As long as they don't try to play Remillard at SS.

Don't forget the Astros had the worst TV ratings in recorded history in the depths of that rebuild. Because the White Sox are banging on the door of that dubious 0.0 as well. Perhaps they have to start marketing Schiffren's antics to draw in more viewers, it's that bad.

Just don't think there's a match with the Padres... If I'm Preller (and he's already saved this season with Profar and Arraez so far), you're looking at guys like Severino, Manaea, Quintana, Megill, on the Mets, for example. I highly doubt even Preller's going to take a chance trying for a package of Crochet/Robert, even though that's the one with the highest possible payoff (more future years than 2024) for 2025-26. Just depends on how solid he feels his position is out there...with the failure of Bogaerts (so far), Machado's injuries and future profile, Musgrove/Darvish injured/aging, it's an interesting position to be in considering the farm system is still Top 6-10 in the big leagues and they're also in the Top 3 for attendance and need to try to sustain that after the debacle with their RSN.

For Crochet? Haha. That's the beginning of a Robert and Crochet deal. Let's say Salas Merrill (actually a SS, so should be valued as one) Snelling DeVrieze plus one more Tier B. Honestly think Preller would be reluctant to move Merrill because that opens up another hole in the outfield and he would then be relying on Robert's spotty health. SD might be reluctant about Robert contract as well. Without Bogaerts and Machado on the books this would be easier.

Just like Gordon Beckham (once compared to Derek Jeter in his future impact on the Sox during the first 3-4 months of his rookie season), Montgomery being "only" an 820 OPS type of player would be fine, but it might not be enough to move the meter simply because of the cost of buying 850+ OPS guys in free agency. It feels like the only way the Sox would be able to compete in the future would be adding a bunch of 750-825 OPS players all across the diamond, instead of having 2-3 superstars (like the Blue Jays and Padres models) and trying to backfill in around that. I still can't see where those players are going to come from. Maybe Gonzalez and/or Baldwin can hold down the middle infield. Montgomery at 3b, faith in Ramos isn't quite so high anymore. Lee at catcher. That still leaves 1B, DH and an entire outfield, assuming a Luis Robert trade at some point.

The biggest problem was the replacement for Renteria...not really a debate about the need for someone else with more winning/playoff experience who could "take that next step." There were a lot of other names out there like Bochy and Hinch at the time, for example.
