White Sox Sign Sergio Santos to 3 year deal
danman31 replied to Al Lopez's Ghost's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) But another example in the past would be someone like Josh Fogg, who was a reliever at Florida and with the Sox...eventually evolving into a pretty high quality starter, enough to start a World Series game. Umm what? Josh Fogg as a pretty high quality starter? He was a well below average SP. -

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 06:08 PM) Not absolutely sucking scouting wise would be nice, too. I realize money is a big part. But wow. You would think you'd hit on one first-round pick by accident over the course of a decade (the jury is still out on Sale). QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 02:09 PM) You can find nasty left-handed (or right-handed) relievers well after the first round if you're competent. Like Addison Reed. The Sox have actually drafted decently in recent years. 3 guys from the 2008 draft are already in the Majors (Morel, Hudson, Beckham) and 2 from 2010 (Sale, Reed). Obviously it's way too early to judge the value of these guys, but I think the draft struggles have firmly fallen on the lack of a budget. Considering they're always in the bottom group for draft spending to have average draft results is a compliment to the scouting and development. -

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 07:02 PM) Dodds wants to add SMU, Rice, and Houston. 3 more in-state schools that would be his b****es. Ugh. If Mizzou has a legit SEC offer, you guys would be insane not to go. I don't think there's any question about that. If the conference remakes the SWC, all the more reason for the former Big 12 North schools to bolt. Unfortunately, not all of them can leave. I'm not even sure if Mizzou will leave. Part of me thinks that the only reason Mizzou hasn't bolted already is that they are waiting on the expansion choices. If it's all Texas schools it should make every non-Texas school incredibly weary. If it's a mix of BYU, Louisville, West Virginia, whatever, then maybe the league is sustainable. -

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 09:47 PM) In the ever fun rumor world, BYU supposedly decided tonight to join the Big 12 and will announce on Friday. If the Mormons are in, I'd say it's a good time for Missouri to already be gone. C'mon, make a move happen. -
Dylan Axelrod is making a fine impression. Two great starts out of 3.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 08:57 PM) Sounds like West Virginia likely to SEC. Have to imagine this fast-tracks Louisville to the Big 12. Dude you gotta lay off the twitter. Things change faster on there than they do in real life. -

FFS can we get Axelrod a deserved win? -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 08:43 PM) God damn it, seriously I'm more excited now than any point since October of 2005. Something is wrong with you. You may have disliked Ozzie in the end of his tenure, but it's not worth getting this excited over. I can't feel hate towards the guy who managed a White Sox World Series. I feel sorry for you that you let more recent events make the most successful manager in franchise history a villain.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 06:11 PM) Who knows if they are, ASU just smashed USC. And we have yet to see Wisconsin play a team as good as ASU or Western michigan. Hard to be impressed by USC who beat Minnesota by 2. Gotta love early season college football. You can go back and forth about who has looked good or bad based on the transitive property. -

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:41 PM) Sounds like A&M will officially be gone to the SEC today. I can say with full enthusiasm that they can go f*** themselves. They gone. I'm almost starting to believe Mizzou will be joining them. I'm thinking it's maybe 40% at this point. It could probably be higher QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 05:47 PM) Not really. If they lose to Wisconsin and beat everyone else, that's an 11-1 season. May very well get a BCS bid, and would go over another 2 loss Big Ten team (looking at Nebraska). I think you took him a bit too literally. Of course 11-1 gets a BCS bowl, but after beating Western Michigan by 3 it's hard to expect 11-1. Beating Wisconsin probably lets Illinois go 10-2 and have a shot at a BCS game. Illinois has its toughest game to date up next. Northwestern coming off a loss and a bye with Persa back is tougher than Arizona State coming off a relatively big win. -
Not sure how old this is, but Brandon Kloess, Nevin Griffith and Jacob Petricka filled in the remaining pitcher slots for the Sox. Kloess is 26, but had a great year. Maybe he's a late bloomer? We'll have some velo numbers on him at least. Griffith is probably a lost cause, but maybe he can be converted to the bullpen in Arizona (wishful thinking). Petricka is a minor surprise because the AFL is a bit of a jump for him. There's a bit of intrigue with most everyone there (except Phegley to me), but Saladino is the only exciting inclusion.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 12:40 AM) Meaning safe picks ended up busting real hard, thus, weren't safe. Touche. Poreda busted as well, but the Sox sold on the high with him. Not that Peavy has been a good return but...
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 12:15 AM) Fixed. I don't get it. The 'safe' arms everyone refers to were pitchers with good control and multiple pitches, but low velocity fastballs. With Poreda and Sale the Sox took high velocity arms with a lot of talent. That stigma should be gone by now.
-
QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 06:33 PM) I am going to go KLaw on this one. When was the last time the Sox took a HS player in the first round? 2000? I think it will be a safe bet college arm, Brian Johnson. It was 2001 so ha! And the Sox don't take safe bet arms anymore. McCulloch was 5 years ago.

What a comeback by Ok State. Down 20-3 at half and roll 27 unanswered in the second half and hold on. I'm not sold on either team being quite elite, but I believed Ok State had a better chance to be legit going in. This confirms that. Bedlam will be insane this year. The Cowboys have to go to Texas and Missouri in back to back weeks so I'm hesitating to say both could be undefeated, but it would be fun to see. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 04:30 PM) If you were to knock out the first round in any of the last few years, would it wind up similar? We knew a lot about say...Sale and Beckham...but it took a while before the names "Daniel Hudson" and "Brent Morel" filtered through, for me at least. Morel had a dominant two weeks in Great Falls and then held his own in Kannapolis. Last year Saladino did the same. Hudson put up 90 K in 69.2 IP. I guess for that matter we have Kevan Smith this year. I just think that since the 2nd 3rd and 4th rounder combined for less than 10 innings pitched and there is no true first rounder it seems more unknown to me. It's basically Kevan Smith, Snodgress and nothing. Blair Walters as a lefty is a possible sleeper, but that's still kind of a stretch.

QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 11:55 PM) I've been playing it non stop with that Ea Sports Season Ticket. Career mode is a lot of fun so far.. the scouting is completely different. You no longer have to spend your budget on upgrading offensive, defensive coaches, stadium upgrades etc. Player progression seems good. I bought Neymar from Santos as an 84 overall and by the end of the season he was a 89 overall due to his fantastic season (32 total goals). The soundtrack is freaking amazing as well, even better than last years which i didn't think was possible. They got rid of those upgrades in 11, but I'm really glad to hear about player progression. It was absolute garbage last year.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 23, 2011 -> 03:48 AM) Snodgress passes the smell test. He'll be a guy to watch next year. I'm pretty sure he was a player the Sox were considering with their supplemental pick, so perhaps it wasn't without due cause. Yeah I think a few people on here were confused with the pick considering his lack of college success, but a big lefty is always a good thing. It's nearly impossible to evaluate this year's draft class. Between Johnson and Soptic barely pitching and McMillen getting hurt you have 3 of the top 4 picks still largely unknown. Walker was disappointing, but it's too early to give up on him. Then you have a few later sleepers. It's never easy to judge a draft after a few months, but I can't remember knowing less about a class at this point.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 11:41 PM) They'll never be elite under Coach Zook (at least not overall, they can scatter in occasional outstanding seasons), but if they're winning 8 games, people are going to be happy. Right, I don't think there's anything wrong with that either. Rock's point was that a team like that is only hurt in a super conference, but I'm not so sure it makes a difference. -

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 07:05 PM) He loves taking shots at the Illini, it's what he does as a Mizzou guy. Makes it sound like we're bottom feeders of the Big Ten, which is just ignorant anyway. Still pissed they beat ASU. That wasn't a shot at Illinois. It was a realistic statement. I don't see Illinois winning the Big Ten as long as Ron Zook is the coach. I would think many Illinois fans would agree with that statement. However, if you doubt Illinois is a bottom feeder, look no further than their conference record. In the last 9 seasons Illinois has one winning season in conference play with a record of 21-51.
