Official NHL 2014-15 Thread
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I think Seattle would be a great place for a hockey team. Dilute some of those s***ty Canucks fans. -
Well Tyler Wilson dominated the Knights this afternoon.... Semien, 1-2, 2B, BB Wilkins, 1-3, 2B (this 38th!!) Davidson/Phegley, 0-3, 3 K.

QUOTE (beautox @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 11:11 PM) Matuella Aiken Bickford Bregman Kirby in that order for me I haven't even begun to do my research on guys yet. I find it largely useless until the season starts next year. Names will change so much. The only consensus top pick so far seems to be Daz Cameron, and he's not even as consensus as Rodon was at this time last year.
-
Baez currently has a 44.4% K-rate. The highest K-rate ever recorded in a season by a qualified hitter was Chris Carter, just last year, at 36%.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 11:02 PM) If the draft was held tonight, the Sox would be picking 8th (7th worst record, but Astros picking twice). The Twins choked that game away, or else the Sox would have been up to the 7th pick. I'm waiting until the games finish to update the thread, but we can do no better than the 8th pick tonight. Rangers, Rockies, Dbacks are all losing right now. -
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 11:04 PM) 8.000 at best when Football starts. Can you imagine what we will draw on a Monday night when the Bears play? Like 5000.
-
Because of this loss, the Sox have moved from 10th pick to #8 pick. 1 GB of Twins for 7th pick. If the Rangers come back and win tonight, we will be 7 GB of the #1 pick.

Let's go Jose. Put one over them mountains.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 08:38 PM) He took the only walk in that game. IIRC Mark then picked him off. Yep. He was the only baserunner that game. Took a very close 3-2 pitch inside. Mark then promptly picked him off 1B. I knew it was coming, so I kept my camera on 1st. I got the pick off on camera, perfectly as Paulie applies the tag to his arm.......but a vendor had walked in to my shot. So it looked like Paulie is tagging the vendor. I was so pissed off.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 06:46 PM) That's a really cool tradition Will have to adopt it when I start taking my son to games. Thumbs up man. My dad has always written who he attended the game with, and the final score. But I decided on the "memorable moments" idea instead. I'm very glad I did that. In fact let me go grab a few and type them out...... - Kris Versteeg 100th career goal - Brett Favre's "Last" game (this is December 31st, 2006, his first of about 3 "last" games) - Jordan Danks first major league start - Hector Santiago major league debut, 1 IP, 1 K - Aaron Poreda's first major league win - Jon Garland, CG 4-hitter And here is the one I was looking for..... - Gordon Beckham's first major league hit PS: One of my tickets I can't read the back of, because it's currently framed in between a picture of me at the game, and Sammy Sosa standing on first base. The game was Mark Buehrle's no hitter.
-
QUOTE (hi8is @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 06:30 PM) Same experience here - he was exciting to see live then I think I was at Beckham's first major league hit? I write on the back of all my game tickets if something memorable happens, so I'll have to check that.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 10:28 AM) The great joy people take seeing a person they don't even know struggling is actually pretty sad. And it's not even like he was a bad teammate, or bad with the media, or with the fans. He was very likeable. I am not sure why anyone would wish him to suck in LA, other than not wanting to regret letting him leave. I hope Gordon does great in LA.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 06:06 PM) It looks like he's going to JuCo so yes he would be eligible for the 2015 draft. Wouldn't that be crazy if he enters, and the Sox nab him? Rodon and Aiken to the Sox. That would be a crazy thing to say a couple months ago.

Danish allows a HR to the first batter, apparently a bomb.

Engel is 1-1, single. Danish about to take the hill.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 05:17 PM) The first one has more name actors...Ethan Hawke, especially. The second one, the most recognizable guy is Frank Grillo from Transformers 4 and maybe he was in GI Joe? At any rate, the premise of Purge 2 is much more compelling...and yeah, that the supposedly impregnable security is so easily defeated, and then the "random dangerous minority dude introduced into random white suburb angle" was too predictable, both in its inclusion and conclusion. Couple things that bothered me in the first one..... Why is the boy choosing this stranger over his family? I get his initial motive to let the guy in the house, but then once it became apparent that it was either him or them, the kid still decided to help the random guy out. They didn't give the kid any reason for his motives to hate his parents. Why does the sister keep running off and disappearing? These kids aren't 4 or 5 years old. The older sister especially should understand the gravity of the situation. What is the purpose of the boyfriend even existing in this movie? He is dead within 10 minutes and has nothing to do with the black guy entering the house, or the purgers finding the house. He serves no purpose other than to upset the daughter. The whole "It's either he dies, or we die" struggle with the black dude, then once the black dude agrees to die, the dad says "Nah, f*** it, let's put our lives on the line for you." The purgers said they wanted the black guy ALIVE. Yet the dad tells his wife to stab the letter opener in to his wounds a few times to get him to cooperate. Uhhh....how about you hit in in the face a few times? Smash his hand? Do something that won't put his life at even more risk. So the purgers appear to rip down some sort of gate in front of the front of the house. Why does this then disengage all the sealed windows? Right after they rip the gate off, people start crawling in through side windows. How does that make sense? The neighbors come in, slaughter everyone, and then decide to kill the family themselves? Why put themselves in danger? Why not just let the purgers murder the family? It's not like it makes a difference in the family knows that the neighbors hate them right before they are killed. The way way way too predictable ending where the black guy who has been missing for a half hour and has been bleeding out, comes in and saves the day, kicking everyone's ass, and then immediately goes back to being severely injured and dying. Oh, well this is actually hours later once they wait for 7 am to come. So this black guy is bleeding out for about 10 hours or so? That's all I can think of right now. Just a terrible, terrible execution on what I really thought was a cool and fun premise.

From yesterday, the Sox gained 0.5 games on.... Texas, Rockies, Red Sox, Phillies. Only team that the Sox lost 0.5 games on yesterday was... Houston. Sox are now 8 GB of the #1 pick, and 4.5 GB of the #5 pick. They sit at #10. -
I had a roommate who was obsessed, and still is probably, with Modern Family. I would watch it with her, but it never made me think it's an amazing show that deserves to win pretty much every comedy award. Just sticking to network comedies, I much much prefer Parks and Rec.
-
Since people seem to really enjoy The Purge 2, I decided to finally watch the first one. I really liked the premise of it, but man it was a bad movie. Terrible, illogical motives and predictable plot points. I hope the 2nd one is as good as I've heard.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 09:06 AM) Hey greg, thanks for killing any intelligent discussion in this thread. Signed Soxtalk. Yeeesh. Aren't you an admin? -
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 10:41 PM) It's amazing how well their main prospects have been in the minors this year, outside of Almora. Hopefully these guys flop in the majors. Yeah, prior to this season I was so sick of hearing how great all these prospects were, that even though I'm not a Cubs hater, I was hoping they would all fail terribly this year. Instead, they have all pretty much had great years. CJ Edwards was about the only one having a bad year (injury), and he even has been really good his last 2 starts in AA since returning.

QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 10:39 PM) Semien will be better than Baez IMO Yeah, I wouldn't count on that. Baez's ceiling is way higher than Semien's. The only way Semien has a better/longer major league career is due to each of their plate disciplines. Semien has a ton, and Baez has virtually none. I would say Semien has the higher floor, Baez has the higher ceiling. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 11:51 PM) I want to ask you. Throw out all these metrics. You watched him play for these many ways. Do you personally feel ... do your eyes tell you Gordon Beckham was IN ANY WAY a valuable member of the White Sox? Like I said if he is a good No. 8 pick throughout history, then baseball GMs are worst than I thought. But please answer my personal question, this time using no metrics at all. Your opinion of Gordon Beckham from what you saw .... and others that cite stats that say he's good please comment as well. Just by virtue of not only making the major leagues, but lasting 6 years, Gordon Beckham was a good #8 pick. That being said, when compared to actual major leaguers, which is what WAR does, he was terrible. You know it, I know it, and advanced metrics confirm all this. But any draft pick that even reaches the major leagues is considered somewhat of a success no matter what. -
Breaking Bad, as it should have, just bent the Emmy's over a barrel and showed them the 50 states. Won for best drama, best actor, best supporting actor, best supporting actress. Only major award it didn't win was best lead actress, because it didn't even have an entry. It also won a few other awards for other things. I am pretty sure they won every single award they were nominated for except for one, and it lost it to True Detective, which is fine with me.

QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 09:41 PM) Where did anybody use advanced stats to justify Gordon Beckham being good? Yeah, I have no idea what Greg is talking about, other than me saying he has been worth 10x more WAR than Aaron Crow. He only has a career 4.8 WAR in 6 full seasons, and 2.5 of that came in his great rookie year. That means in his 5 seasons after his rookie year, he put up a 2.3 WAR overall. That's absolutely terrible. Advanced stats hate Gordon Beckham, just like Greg does....
