St. Louis Cardinals vs. Boston Red Sox
As much as I'm an AL guy, I just can't root for the Red Sox. I hope the Cardinals sweep the Red Sox just to get it over with as fast as possible.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Boston Red Sox
I'm rooting for Wacha and Beltran, but I'm not rooting for the Cardinals or Red Sox- if that makes sense. Been a tough postseason to find teams to like. Also, when this is over, the White Sox will be 1 of 6 teams to win a World Series in the last 10 years. With more and more distance from 2005, it just shows how hard it is to win a World Series. And if you win a World Series in one of the two years you make the postseason--we're really, really fortunate to have that happen. And the Giants are even luckier. Red Sox in 7.

Sox Sign Jose Abreu - 6/$68 million
QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 20, 2013 -> 08:02 AM) Guys like John Olerud and Dave winfield didn't even go to the minors, if my old mind is still working. Correct. Add Bob Horner, Pete Incaviglia, and Jim Abbott.

Your Realistic 2014 Lineup
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 19, 2013 -> 10:24 AM) That would be horrible for us. Agreed. To me, every move the Sox make should be for Opening Day, 2015. Getting Phillips now is just the wrong move. If he's starting his career decline now, let him do that with a different team in 2014. Could you imagine if the Sox got him, he had an even worse offensive season in 2014, and the Sox are still on the hook for 3 yrs/39 mil in 2015-2017? Nah.

With Abreu Signing; Konerko Not Out
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 03:14 PM) I wonder if Konerko would be willing to take an "Organizational hitting coach" job next year. Not the team hitting coach but one overseeing the full system. When Konerko is done playing, the only time we're going to see him for at least two years is the weekend they retire his number. No way he doesn't get away from the game for a while.

2014 Draft class
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 01:10 PM) I would go the opposite, but definitely understand your opinion. I like Turner. He is a legit SS with excellent athleticism. Because he is such a good fielder with top-line speed, he at worst is a solid starting SS in the major leagues. If he hits like he has shown when healthy, he is a 6-8 WAR player annually -- maybe more. My main reason with him over Gatewood is that you just can't miss having a pick so high. Gatewood might have 40 HR power, but he is far more likely to bust than Turner. Plus, there are many questions about his future position. The one negative to Turner is that he sounds like Beckham (not skillset) but in that he is a guarantee to be a MLB starter for years to come and well Beckham has definitely been a bust. That's mostly my concern. I'm just glad the Sox are at 3, and not 9 or 10, or 16. They're going to get who they want after Rodon and the other guy. And hopefully in 7.5 months, it will be clear to them who they should draft.

2014 Draft class
QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 12:50 PM) I know there is still a long way to go here, but if you drafted today, would you take Turner or Gatewood? I'm no expert or anything, but if it's only a choice between those two, I'd go Gatewood. More power, and upside. Could be a 3B long term.

Sox Sign Jose Abreu - 6/$68 million
That's so Merkin... https://twitter.com/scottmerkin/status/391252009338171392 Hey, if they want to find a way to move Dunn out of Chicago, and bring back PK as a part-timer, fine.

Sox Sign Jose Abreu - 6/$68 million
What gets lost in the overall numbers with Viciedo, is that his bat goes silent for months at a time. He's so inconsistent, and you never trust him to get a run in when has to be driven in.

Sox Sign Jose Abreu - 6/$68 million
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) Keith Law's Insider reaction piece essentially says that this is a weird move for the White Sox because it's risky and that Abreu has a good chance of declining rapidly by the time the Sox are contending in a few years. While I don't have expectations for contending in 2014, maybe the Sox feel like with Chris Sale as an ace, they have to force the issue right now. There's no point in keeping an ace pitcher on a perennial losing team (you hear that, Mariners?). Hey, the Sox have money to spend, some pieces to trade, some prospects that look promising. Let's see what they can do by Opening day, 2015. They could be a contender by then.

Sox Sign Jose Abreu - 6/$68 million
QUOTE (PolishPrince34 @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 10:55 AM) Supposedly 4 other teams made bids between $63-$66 million on Abreu according to Rosenthal I guess it's comforting to know that four other teams were in the same ballpark and had the same confidence that Abreu can hit major league pitching right now.

Hitting Coach Speculation

Sox Sign Jose Abreu - 6/$68 million
The Sox were in the perfect position to overpay to get home runs. They need home runs at the Cell, there's a vacancy at 1B, and there was a lack of power bats on the free agent market. Plus most of the Sox prospects are fast guys that don't hit homers. So they overpaid to get 25-35 homers from Abreu. My expectations are low for him to be an MVP-type player, but if he hits 175 homers over the next 6 years, he will have been worth it.
