ESPN pulls out of coaches' poll, BCS process
SuperSteve replied to greasywheels121's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 12:12 AM) A few of my good friends have played collegiate sports (I'm not near as talented) and from there instances (and this is limited) they have been pretty well taken care of. Its definately hard work and you have to put in a lot of time working with the team, etc, but you also get a free education (in most instances) and are doing something you love. Most people work in college to pay for their education and athletes that get scholarships don't really need to. They also get spending money often and obviously a full scholarship includes perks for living and all that good stuff. Plus they get food allotments during road trips (pretty good ones at that). Now its definately rough on a guy that doesn't have a scholarship, but at the same time you make sacrifices in life for things you want to do and they are doing that. They wont' be able to work but they are doing something you love. High Schools make money off sports (well many sports don't, bad example) but what about the ones that do (the major major programs). Should the huge money making football schools in Texas (high school) pay the kids? Sure maybe they deserve some deals on room and board and other things since they can't work and are helping out, but I wouldn't say they deserve salary or things like that. I'd make sure that athletes got food and at least a discounted dorm (at a lot of schools they do) and I think thats a rather fair tradeoff. Just my 2 cents. I feel kids who are not on scholarships should recieve some type of money from the school or NCAA. I know kids who are on scholarships who actually make a few thousand dollars when the year is all said and done. I also know some kids who are on scholarships and get more scholarships from the school because they cannot afford very much as they had been poorer growing up. Schools can give kids alot of stuff (equipment, tutors, et al), but football and basketball are the only real ones who make it off well. Most sports have minimal scholarships (wrestling has 9.9 for 30 kids compared to footballs 85). -
Now This is Some Heated Competition

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 07:35 AM) Hell some of the words they were having those kids try to spell I hadn't heard some of them...then when they gave the definition for them... I was thinking WTF would you use that word in a sentence when you could use other ones....they hurt my brain with all that thinking...hehe I needed a definition of some of the definitions. -
I won't watch it.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 07:58 AM) But the thing is nowadays teams aren't going to be that stupid. Look at Colorado with Todd Helton. Bora$$ thinks it's ok for the a team to pay at least an extra half of what he would probably get with another agent. He FORCES his clients to go into the FA market, and things like loyalty, family and comfort etc. just don't come into play with his negotiations. If the Tampa Bay Devil Rays offered Mr. X $25 million over 2 years, while say the Yankees offered $17.5 million over 2 years (if he played for the Yankees originally, and enjoyed playing there), Bora$$ would advise his client to take the D-Rays offer, even if the teams sucks and has no chance of making the playoffs. Jeff Weaver and Stephen Drew did the right thing though, even though Bora$$ was desperate for them to stay in the draft, for an extra $2 million. That's how this guy works, plain and simple. IIRC Andruw Jones would be an example of someone who stayed with the club as opposed to your scenerio.

Looks like alot of pitchers. I kind of would have liked to see a catcher by this point.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 08:50 AM) Ok thanks Steve, looks like 2 and a half hours sleep for me. Same here, I haven't gone to bed yet, and it is 9am here.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 08:35 AM) Did Guillen ever deal with Mota? Wasn't Mota traded to the fish last year in the big deal with the Dodgers that included Brad Penny? I think he meant he would back McKeon over a player, there with Ozzie or not. Mota was in the deal for Penny, but it has nothing to do with Mota, it is about Ozzie's relationship with Jack McKeon.
-
QUOTE(3E8 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 01:28 PM) Here's another gem from Ozzie. Now I understand why we don't finish off any sweeps. Nice attitude Oz. Actually there is a little more you can do. You could start by not playing eenie meeni minie moe with your lineup card on the last game of each sereis. I like that he plays everybody. You're not going to get very far if your team is only ten or eleven everyday players deep. Would I do it a little differently, yes, but it's not me, and he is the one who is the manager. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 05:06 AM) Are we forgetting the fact that we have a couple of 8-game winning streaks under our belt already? Those are difficult to accomplish without a sweep or two mixed in. I think too many people are spoiled by those streaks. Not sweeping the Rangers, Orioles, and Angels makes us a middle of the pack team. Losing a game to the Injuns when started by Sabathia is a loss I can take if we have taken the other two games.

Anyone want a familiar face for Bullpen Help?
SuperSteve replied to JDsDirtySox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
No. -
I originally had to pick my sister up from her last day of school at 11:30, but she called and said it was 10:30, so I am all happy now.

Kids avoiding science because of Evolution debate
SuperSteve replied to southsider2k5's topic in SLaM
I actually had a class this year which talked about human evolution. I want my kids to learn it too. -
What would you rather have?

If I won the WNBA Championship, I'd be making what, atleast $50 for the season... -
No bra....I actually don't even waste the time with the straps...I just take it off with the shirt, two birds with one stone.

I'm eleven.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 30, 2005 -> 07:14 PM) Yeah, he was pretty bad. That said, I didn't like him bunting in either of those situations. Either, get Pablo in there, or let Crede swing away. Yes, Timo had a big hit. He still sucks. When he showed bunt on the first pitch for the second time, I was about to die. I couldn't imagine him trying to bunt again after his tremendous job earlier in game.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 30, 2005 -> 07:13 PM) I'm just not surprised he is already hurt. Thought he was rushed back too soon and I had a bad feeling he may not be ready yet. This may have been just a fluke injury, but I'd like to have 100% assurance that he is ready to go at full-speed before throwing him out there again. With some of the slugs we have burning up the average column, we can't afford to have him come back before totally ready and get injured for the rest of the year. Well, that is different then. I can respect that answer. I can see a good reason to why he was rushed back too, as it seems the management thought this club needed a spark after losing a bunch of games in a row.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 30, 2005 -> 07:02 PM) It's all good, I wouldn't expect anything less on a Sox message board. (End of Frank "f***ing" Thomas 10th all-time in OPS and future HOF bashing.) QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 30, 2005 -> 07:04 PM) I missed the bashing at the end. My bad.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 30, 2005 -> 06:56 PM) Bash, I just said the Big Skirt is hurt already, which I am not surprised by. Hell if that's bashing then everyone around here shouldn't be able to say anything about a player period. I mean it shouldn't be surprising that Frank is hurt already. You made a comment, they replied. If them calling you an idiot for saying what you said is bashing, than yes, what you said I see as on the same level of bashing. And I am surprised he is hurt after three ABs.
-
QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 30, 2005 -> 06:50 PM) You guys should know that I don't like Frank, get over it. And enough bashing. You bash a player, and then say enough bashing?
