QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 24, 2009 -> 03:08 AM) BTW, has anyone ever seen a movie called THE FALL? Some people rave about it...I see at imdb that the reviews have it above 8, which is pretty rare over there. I just saw this tonight. I'm a big fan of Pan's Labyrinth, one of my favorites of all time, and someone said this was somewhat similar so I decided to check it out on Netflix. I liked it. The story has it strengths and weaknesses and I felt it dragged on a bit. However, it's a beautiful film and I definitely recommend it. I don't know why it didn't get more attention when it was released. I give it an 8/10.

QUOTE (Disco72 @ Jan 18, 2009 -> 11:14 AM) Saw Gran Torino last night, and I thought it was excellent. What didn't you like about it? The dialogue was corny. The story was predictable and slow to get going. The acting was not very good, including Clint. But the Academy loves Clint so he just might get nominated. The best films I've seen so far are Doubt and Milk. Doubt is something that stays with you after the movie is over and the performances are all superb. Milk is not your ordinary biopic. The film is mainly about the politics of Harvey Milk and you leave the film inspired. Again, the acting is top notch, especially Penn, Brolin, and Franco.

Hamlet 2 is hilarious! Gran Torino is not all that good. Man on Wire is an incredible story!
  7. We've already done Funniest Movies and TV Comedies. So I say sexiest women would be a nice change of pace, or if we wanna narrow it down we could have different categories for sexiest female athletes/actresses/musicians. Favorite Comedians would be a good one to keep with the comedy theme. Also, just had an idea that may be something different and interesting. Most memorable news stories or world events during your lifetime. So the old folks would have the JFK Assassination and the moon landing and us young folks would have 9/11, Columbine, OJ Simpson trial etc. Although that may be too top heavy with recent events because I think most people here are only in their 20s and we only have a few in their 40s and up.

Like I said I have yet to see quite a few movies including... Slumdog Millionaire Milk The Reader Revolutionary Road The Wrestler So maybe the great movies are just taking longer to get anywhere near me this year. The only two movies I have seen that have been worth all the buzz are The Dark Knight and WALL-E. Even they hype surrounding those two is a little much. IMDb currently has them ranked #5 and #35 respectively. Really...they're good but not that good. The Visitor and Happy-Go-Lucky are a couple of movies that have gone under the radar that I found rewarding. So this year has not been terrible or anything. It's just nothing matches up with the great movies of 2007 for me yet.

Movies I've seen recently... Ghost Town 5/10 In Bruges 6/10 The Visitor 7/10 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 6/10 I still need to see a few more movies from 2008 before giving a top 10 list or anything but I think this has been a down year for movies. I could name about 5 movies from 2007 that I liked more than any 1 film from 2008.
  10. She & Him - Volume One Coldplay - Viva la Vida Beck - Modern Guilt The Cure - 4:13 Dream Conor Oberst - Conor Oberst Not a studio album but it's from one of my favorite bands and it came out this year so it gets honorable mention... The Clash - Live at Shea Stadium

The Producers Guild of America announced nominations for film awards today which is a pretty good indicator for the Oscars' Best Picture race. 4 out of 5 nominees went on to earn Best Picture nominations the last four years. The nominees are... The Curious Case of Benjamin Button The Dark Knight Frost/Nixon Milk Slumdog Millionaire I've only seen TDK so far but plan to see TCCoBB and Doubt this week or next and the other 2 whenever they come near me.
  12. First game is tomorrow morning so don't forget to make your picks and change confidence points if you haven't already.
  13. I'm very surprised and happy to see Love Actually made the list and I can't wait to see how the top 10 breaks down.
  14. Haha. I can't believe only the 2 of us voted for it. I also voted for the Extras Christmas Special but I doubt that makes the list.
  15. I created a college football pick'em group on yahoo if anyone wants to join. I didn't see one anywhere yet and the games start a week from tomorrow. http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/bowl Group ID# 38280 Password: quentin

  17. I'm making my list and It's kinda sad how few I can come up with. Half of my list is gonna be tv shows and I'm not even sure if Edward Scissorhands counts but I'm putting it on my list because it is a Christmas movie to me.
  18. That was a great game! Vassallo could not miss anything. It might have gone the other way had Allen not committed all those stupid fouls. Anyways, it was a big win for Wisconsin in a tough environment.
  19. The annual Big Ten Beatdown courtesy of the ACC starts tonight. I really wish the Big Ten would win one of these sometime or at least keep it close. The last couple of years have been blowouts. Unfortunately, I think the ACC will probably dominate just as much if not more this year. My predictions... Monday Virginia Tech over Wisconsin Tuesday Miami over Ohio State Boston College over Iowa Illinois over Clemson Duke over Purdue Minnesota over Virginia Wednesday Wake Forest over Indiana Georgia Tech over Penn State Maryland over Michigan North Carolina over Michigan State Northwestern over Florida State Big Ten: 3 ACC: 8

  22. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 27, 2008 -> 12:51 PM) Wow. You managed to apply the actions of a few terrorists to all people who participate in a religion, which is what, 90% of the world? Congratulations, that is one big paint brush. I did not say anywhere that all religious people partake in violence or that all religions promote violence either. Simply stated the fact that everyone ignores because the topic of religion is not allowed to be criticized by the mainstream. The fact is that religious beliefs are at the root of this violence and will continue to be until there is a fundamental change in religious or spiritual thinking. People continue to say that attacks such as these are mindless or irrational but they are completely rational when you look at what these people believe based on their religion. This life on earth means nothing when you can assure yourself of eternal bliss in the afterlife. This is why you see mothers, families, and friends celebrating after a young man lays down his life for God. Of course Islam has taken a lot of criticism lately and rightfully so but let's not forget the atrocities that have been committed because of Christian beliefs as well. The Crusades, the Inquisition, and since today is Thanksgiving how about the annihilation and forced assimilation of those "savage" Native Americans. This is all in the past now but certain problems persist today including the promotion of the spread of AIDS in Africa and lack of stem cell research. Religion can teach good morals but it also teaches bad morals. We can have a war on terror but it is hopeless to think we will succeed as long as these religious ideas are around.
  23. QUOTE (Kid Gleason @ Nov 26, 2008 -> 08:45 PM) The new Christmas single from Cyndi Lauper and The Hives: I adore Cyndi and I like The Hives, so this song was destined to be cool. But this is just all sorts of cool that it is silly! Cyndi's voice is amazing on this track (as usual). Thank you for that little gem. I love the Hives, even though their last album was not all that great, but this song is a nice holiday treat. In other music news, Kanye's new album isn't that bad. I especially like Robocop. Not even close to to the greatness of The College Dropout of course but he may not reach that level again the rest of his career. In the end it's not as bad as some people are making it out to be but it's not as good as the people that are praising him for taking his music in a new direction either.
  24. Religion teaches good morals for people to live by...er...um...something like that.
