The New Front in the Gerrymandering Wars: Democracy vs. Math
LittleHurt05 replied to StrangeSox's topic in The Filibuster
The fact that elected officials get to determine the size/shape future districts that will be electing them is ridiculous. At least some states have independent commissions of non elected officials. -
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 11:45 AM) I have a wedding to go to in Houston this weekend. My Thursday morning flight was canceled earlier, I'm trying to find a new one but I'm having a hell of a time. I'm in the wedding party but the only other options I was given to switch to get in late Friday night which would mean I'd miss the rehearsal. Other options I'm considering is just biting the bullet and paying a big sum for another flight Friday morning or flying into Austin and renting a car. The groom says the area where the wedding is was mostly unaffected so all things are a go at the moment. Airlines usually waive change fees during massive event like these, which could help you pick a different flight or maybe to Austin.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 12:30 PM) SportsCenterVerified account @SportsCenter 15h15 hours ago Matthew Stafford, Lions agree to 5-yr deal that is expected to make him highest-paid player in NFL history, a team source told @AdamSchefter NFL Quarterback Hell. Stafford is not on a level with Rodgers/Brady, but the drop off from any potential replacements is so great, that it kind of makes sense to pay him so much money to stay.

QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 24, 2017 -> 09:49 AM) The Dells is awesome. Its a close drive from Chicago so you don't have to worry about going through the chaos of airport travelling with kids. It doesn't drain your pockets for money since the waterpark is included with your hotel stay and the food is simple and easy for the kids. As opposed to taking the kids out of town, going through airports, feeding them at fancy restaurants every meal out of convenience, paying for every theme park/tourist spot throughout the trip. Yeah, we fly with the kids at least 2-3 times a year, so being able to just throw a bunch of s*** in the car and drive for not even 3 hours is so much nicer. We went to the Wilderness Resort, kids had a blast. The place is just so massive, 8 waterparks, go karts, arcades, everything. When the sun was out, the outside pool was warm enough to swim in, then of course there's all the indoor waterparks too. Cracks me up that of course they have the massive 42 oz. frozen alcoholic drinks in fun souvenir glasses for the adults. Although the $9 Spotted Cow drafts was excessive.

QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 01:31 PM) I'm not sure I agree with this assessment of the fight. Mayweather had a plan. He wanted to take the fight deep. Why? Because he didn't think he could beat McGregor with an early knockout. I'm sure if he thought he could come out and overpower McGregor and knock him out in 2 or 3 rounds, he would have. There was never a doubt that Mayweather would win on points if it went the distance. That's pretty much any fight he fights. The first 3 rounds were all McGregor. He landed some decent shots, and he didn't expose himself to shots from Mayweather. Of course, Mayweather wasn't really throwing much. Part of that is strategy. Let the less conditioned guy punch himself out. Part of that was McGregor's awkward style. He fought from an MMA distance - meaning the spacing between the two was the distance he is used to having so he can deliver strikes with his legs. In rounds 4-6, Mayweather closed the distance and started moving forward. McGregor didn't really have an effective plan for this - not sure if he really expected it as Mayweather hasn't fought that way in any recent fights. I'm not sure McGregor's corner really helped him here either. He should have been working the body more and trying to land some uppercuts because Mayweather kept ducking his head. This is where McGregor's muscle memory really hurt him. He kept resorting to hammer punches and locking up with Mayweather when he turned his back rather than pounding the body. Mayweather won rounds 4-6, but he didn't exactly dominate them. The tide turned in rounds 7 and 8. McGregor didn't have much on his punches anymore, and Mayweather could see that McGregor was tiring. In the 9th round, it became obvious to me that the fight wasn't going the distance, as McGregor was in constant retreat. I'm not sure why they didn't tell him to go to the ropes. Even with his back to them, I'm not sure Mayweather could have knocked him out, and McGregor would have saved some energy. I'm surprised McGregor did as well as he did. This is in large part to Mayweather making the decision to engage in the fight. I'm sure he could have fought the defensive fight and won 12 rounds to zero had he wanted. But, he wanted the knockout, and as someone who was disappointed by the Canelo and Pacquiao fights, I'm glad he did that. IMO, your post describes a complete ass kicking, just like the assessment you claim to disagree with. Mayweather dictated the fight exactly how he wanted it to go and never once was in danger. McGregor seemed to do better than people thought, but that's only because Floyd let him.

Royals haven't scored in 43 innings

Preseason games still bring in so much money that owners don't mind their rosters getting depleted by injury.

Sharapova v Halep is a hell of a first round matchup

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 08:13 PM) To be fair, they tried that with NOLA, which was less than half of the size city of Houston, it gridlocked everything an insane amount, and the people who needed to leave didn't actually leave. If all of Metro-Houston had tried to leave, we are talking something like 5 million people trying to push out on I-10, I-45 and the rest of the highways and FMs. I read today that they tried to evacuate before Rita 10 years ago. The storm itself was a dud, but over 100 people died during evacuation as it became an utter s***show for reasons you mentioned. That may have given them second thoughts about evacuating this time

Mayweather is down to like -350. Those are incredible odds, he should be like -2500. If only I had the $$$

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 24, 2017 -> 07:43 PM) Wasn't he roughed up last weekend? 7 innings, 4 runs vs Yankees. Not awesome, not awful. 5 of his 6 starts before then were dominant. Except for the Indians.

I hope none of you guys live by Corpus Christi/Houston. 25 inches of rain sounds like a lot. edit: Didn't see StrangeSox post earlier, but yeah, looks bad

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 24, 2017 -> 12:14 PM) Honestly this is a nice problem to have. They signed Glennon, but then didn't let that contract block them from drafting a guy they think could be a franchise changing player. Most organizations would have let that FA signing stop them from doing it because they might look bad or something. They deserve credit for structuring the contract how they did. If they needed to keep Glennon for years 2-3 they could, but it's very easy to walk away financially. They had to pay someone and needed a QB.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 24, 2017 -> 10:06 AM) Perfectly put. She also was an extremely flawed candidate from the beginning Her biggest flaw was her name. If she was named Jackie Smith, or even Belinda FartKnocker, she would have won. But Hillary Clinton has such a negative connotation, it was the final nail in the coffin.

Taking the kids to one of those massive waterparks in the Dells his weekend. Either the best idea ever or the worst idea ever. Luckily we have grandparents coming to help corral the little ones.

Moncada, Avi, and Anderson with big late hits. That's how you want to win while rebuilding.
