It sounds like he'll definitely be with the Softbanks Hawks for a little bit longer.

2020 MLB Draft Thread
The latest update from Baseball America has the Sox taking Mick Abel. This would be awesome. This pick is tricky. Chicago has been connected to Tennessee LHP Garrett Crochet, Detmers and North Carolina State catcher Patrick Bailey—the typical collegiate suspects for the White Sox. However the noise with Mick Abel has been significant enough that we think it’s legit and with a new scouting director in Chicago there’s no guarantee the team continues to heavily target college players. Still, it’s worth noting that Mike Shirley has been with the club in a high-level role going back to 2010.

The Sox were never taking Patrick Bailey. That was always nonsense. That's the thing about Crochet. He's never thrown enough innings to prove to me that he's a starter long-term. He does have pretty electric shit though. There's a chance that had the season continued, he makes 10 starts and he's not even on the board. He's also likely underslot I'd think.

Will There Be a 2020 Season?
Exactly. Bill DeWitt Jr purchased the cardinals for $150 million in 1995. They'd sell for $3 billion tomorrow.

FS: Mock Draft 3.0
Here's my final attempt. It's destined to be wrong with lots of info coming out today. The White Sox pick seems more realistic than ever though. https://www.futuresox.com/2020/06/09/mlb-mock-draft-3-0/

I'm not sure if that's the same area scout or not. I've heard about interest in Jared Jones though and that's definitely the same area.

I was referencing Mick Abel. The White Sox are big fans of his. I think they'll take Detmers if he's available but Abel is a realistic option. He'll be expensive though.

You lose the money in the current year, yes. Angels would offer Drew Bowser 40% of the slot at #10. He turns it down. They will draft players in rounds 3-5 for those slots and they'll get the 11th pick in the first round next year for not signing Bowser. They don't have a 2nd rounder due to signing Rendon.

They would get the 11th pick in next year’s draft and just spend the $4 million that year when their scouts aren’t furloughed.

I've heard the rumor as well. It is in fact the Angels and it's a player ranked in the 60's on pipeline that isn't expected to sign with any club. It's a joke if they do this.

Will There Be a 2020 Season?
Yeah I was just wrong. People I'd talked to thought it would get done. I thought league would offer to prorate salary with deferrals. Players won't take any deferrals. That's something I didn't anticipate.

Will There Be a 2020 Season?
One key point in all of this is the expanded playoffs. If they can't "agree on something", there are no expanded playoffs. Manfred could essentially dictate a 50 game season right now. Players would get prorated pay but the league wouldn't get expanded playoffs and the owners would take in all the revenue from the 10 team playoffs. The league doesn't want to unilaterally dictate a season for this reason. They probably will though which would suck.

Will There Be a 2020 Season?
I doubt it will be the mandated season. If the owners mandate the length of the season, they can't expand the playoffs. They really need to expand the playoffs. My guess is 65 games and expanded playoffs. I've been wrong throughout this process though.

Fair enough. Those guys are underselling the curveball though.

Soderstrom is nothing like those guys. I'd move him from catcher because keeping him there is a waste of time. You're buying the bat. He can play 3B or OF. That's much different than Collins. Crochet is super risky. I'm just not sure he's a starter. THere's no evidence that he is. Detmers curveball isn't a 55. It's closer to being 70 than 55.

FS: White Sox draft strategy should deviate from college to prep
They get their money but it's deferred. For example, if Zac Veen goes #4 overall and signs for like $7 million, he gets the money over the next two years. Every players gets a maximum of $100K this year. Then he'd get $3.5 million in July of 2021 and $3.5million in July of 2022. The top prep guys will still sign but many have tough decisions to make. It's easy to just go to college but colleges will also have juniors and seniors returning and college coaches don't have all the rules in place yet. It's a mess.

FS: Draft Profile- Garrett Mitchell OF UCLA
Mitchell is a better athlete and can definitely stay in CF. I think Benintendi's hit tool is better. Mitchell is loaded with tools but the diabetes is a real concern for teams.

FS: White Sox draft strategy should deviate from college to prep
I think Soderstrom or Howard would be the most likely. It was moreso me being down on the next tier of college bats. They just don't do much for me. I think Detmers is the pick if he gets to them but I'd probably predict Soderstrom/Howard after that.
