2017 White Sox prediction thread
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Mar 31, 2017 -> 11:12 AM) Probably somewhere between 75 to 79 wins. I'll say 77. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but how? I think they are a bottom 5 team in league right now and haven't subtracted more yet.

Updated teams interested in Q
They need the prospect haul that Q will bring back to maximize the rebuild. he'll be in his early 30's by the time they are good again and will need to be paid also. Keeping Q doesn't make much sense.

2017 Watercooler TV thread
Does anyone watch Scandal? It's something that I can actually watch with my wife. The first season years ago was awesome and then it got super cheesy but I kept watching just because. It's actually good again.

Update: Luis Robert has been cleared according to Rosenthal
Everyone seems to think that the Sox would benefit from him being in the upcoming J2 class but I'm not sure it matters. If he's in the class, the Sox could offer him $8.3 million (after trading for $3.5 million in space). Some small market teams could theoretically pay him $10 million though. I'm not sure it matters but those are the facts. If he's cleared prior to June 15th, it's all about $$. It's not like the big boys are involved though. San Diego, St. Louis, and Houston will be big players in this scenario. The White Sox really can't outbid those teams though if they want the guy? I know the Padres have spent $80 million internationally this year. Would they really pump that up to $120-$130 million to sign Robert? If Reinsdorf can't win a bidding war with those teams, we are probably doomed anyway.

2016-2017 NBA Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 30, 2017 -> 01:25 PM) I'll believe it when I see it. Same stuff was said about Melo a few years ago. Can't wait to see how many negative PER players we could get for Butler from our crack front office. Keeping him doesn't make any sense so I'm just going to hope that they actually do the right thing. Wait until about a year from now when Butler requests a trade out of here and then he really has no value at all.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 29, 2017 -> 12:31 PM) I'm that guy but can anyone read and summarize? http://www.baseballamerica.com/internation...TRd32qHDoIS4.97 Badler says Sox have never gone over bonus pool but wonders if they will do so for Robert if he gets cleared prior to June 15th. White Sox were higher on Fernando Tatis (750K) than the industry was and signing looks good in retrospect. Like Tatis, Sox were higher on Josue Guerrero (1.1 million) than industry. Sox saw short swing with impact at contact and better breaking ball recognition then other clubs saw. Badler thinks he starts in AZL this season as 17 year old. OF Luis Mieses: Intriguing offensive upside, showing power in games, chance for plus or better power and has a plus arm. ($450K) OF Anderson Comas: ($428K). Consistent, repeatable swing. Looks similar to how Gregory Polanco did and has same trainer. Sound understanding of strike zone. RHP Jendersson Caraballo; ($350K). Dominican. 6'3 190 pounds. Touches 92 MPH. Sox saw feel for a change up and repeatable delivery. SS Lenyn Sosa ($325K): Venezuela. 6' 180 pounds. Scouts think he moves to 2B. Line drive hitter, Sox plan to play him at SS and think he can stay there OF Anthony Coronado: Venezuela: ($150K). 6'1 180 pounds. Chance to stay in CF Sox had some Lower $$ Signings: RHP Ramon Pineda (Brother of Michael Pineda); 19 years old, Under radar signing for $10K. 6'3 200 pounds. Previously worked out for clubs as 3B and couldn't hit. Started pitching 7 months before Sox signed him. Throws with little effort, easy arm action, reaches 91 mph with sink, strike thrower, already shows tilt on slider and sinking change up making him potential starter. RHP Brayan Herrera ($70K). Another conversion. 6'2 185 pounds. 95 MPH fastball. Hard slider. 4 pitch mix. May be best as a reliever Kleyder Sanchez Venezuela ($50K): Was showcasing in RF. 5'10 170 pounds. Didn't have enough power for OF. Simple plate approach, Sox signed him and moved him to catcher.

Updated teams interested in Q
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Mar 29, 2017 -> 10:18 AM) Dodgers seem content to hang onto their prospects right now Would a Bellinger, Alvarez and Verdugo package be enough? Enough? Are you kidding me? I think Bellinger is untouchable in a Q trade personally. He'll be contributing to their team this year. Future star. Something could definitely be built around Alvarez and Verdugo though

Rays acquire Bourjos
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:14 PM) Would a Bourjos trade mean May and Liriano share CF? Liriano can't play CF. Leury is backup CF. Doesn't change much. Bench of: Sanchez, Leury, Soto, and Asche IMO.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (credezcrew24 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 04:36 PM) Does anyone know if there are any other available players left on the market that would demand significant bonuses that the Sox could pair with Robert during the current signing period? 2017 International Signings
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:17 AM) The other piece to this equation is Otani. If he does end up coming over this winter as he has said he is going to do, and MLB sticks to its guns that there is no exception for him, someone is going to get him for a steal. The teams that are not making a splash on J2 will have a the best shot (Sox and Orioles for instance). So even if the Sox go all out for Robert in the 2017/18 J2 period and miss, they could have a really nice consolation prize in Otani. I still doubt Otani comes over. He'll either wait until he's 25 or they'll try to make an exception for him. He's not coming over for a $8.3 million bonus.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:40 AM) I think it is lunacy to just assume because we changed in one area, than to assume suddenly this is a franchise that is going to blow away free agency, and international market. History is a much better indication than just because of one thing. This is far and I was with you until I saw 2 separate things. 1. Ben Badler linking the White Sox is a very big deal. 2. The Sox have no rumored agreements for 2017/2018 in a year in which many in the organization publicly stated that they'd be spending internationally. Go back and look at my posts. I was leading the charge on saying there was no way Sox would get him in this current period. I was assuming that they had agreements in place with guys though which clearly isn't the case.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) The Padres have a $55 million payroll for 2017. The White Sox have a $90 million payroll. It would be very easy to argue that the Padres should be the early signing favorite for a few reason. #1 they already have gone over the caps this session, and literally have nothing to lose and everything to gain by bringing in every single player they can before June 15. They also have a lot less payroll spent in this period giving them the ability to spend a bit more than the white Sox have. According to the Forbes list, the Padres actually have a slight overall revenue advantage as of 2016, so the $35 million difference in payroll is significant as to their relative spending abilities. My point is that it doesn't matter. They are capable of outspending the Padres if they want Luis Robert.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 09:03 AM) It benefits the Sox to have him cleared after June 15th, but this is totally out of our control If we sign Robert, great. If not? Then we move on to other guys to sign Hopefully we can find a way to get him This isn't really true. Most of the other guys already have agreements in place with teams. It pretty much seems like Robert or bust at this point which is why I think they end up with him.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 08:49 AM) Very likely that the MLB drags its feet and does not clear Robert prior to June 15th. I think the league frowns upon a team just going nuts in international free agency, hence the new model Sox will be in the mix either way for him I wonder if the Sox would rather have him cleared sooner than later. In the next period, The Sox could offer him $4.75 million. They'd likely have to acquire more $$ to sign him I'd think to a bonus closer to $8 million. If he's cleared now, some think he ends up in STL or SD but Sox could justify spending more than those teams on him in current period. If they really want him, I think they get him. They paid $68 million for Abreu. It's different because of none of that was a penalty but it's still $68 million. They offered $25 million for Jorge Soler. If they think he's worth $50 million they could easily offer $25 million and pay a $25 million tax to take it to $50 million total. It's still just money. I know they haven't typically operated this way but Hahn has hinted towards doing it for the "right" player.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 26, 2017 -> 11:58 PM) The main problem lies in competing with some very rich organizations who can simply outbid the Sox taking the bidding to a place where the Sox feel uncomfortable. Now I am not hip to exactly which signing period will limit spending ,but if neither does, I can't see the Sox spending 30M+ on a prospect especially when you can always spend somewhere around $2 million on some of the better albeit very young prospects if you trust your scouts. The current top Red Sox prospect Rafael Devers cost $1.5M as a 16 yr old. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of other stories like that out there. Those under 300K guys are "you get what you pay for" and "scraping the bottom of the barrel" signees. I am all for going after Roberts but will be miffed if they don't get him and the Sox walk away with bupkis. They really aren't competing with very rich organizations. If they want Robert, they can go get him. It's that simple. I've outlined how in multiple posts and even wrote an article for FutureSox about the prospects of doing so.

Predict the 2017 Opening Day Roster
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 26, 2017 -> 11:00 PM) Then on what are you basing thinking Asche makes the team ? Surely as a non roster invitee if he had sucked there wouldn't be a chance at him making the team. His spring numbers, both power wise and OBP, have been the most impressive of all the Sox . Platoon partner for Davidson. My point was that they aren't dumping Matt Davidson. Avisail f***ing Garcia is still running around. DFAing Davidson before he gets plate appearances with the big league club doesn't make any sense. Are Asche's numbers really good? I don't really pay close attention to spring training stats because they don't matter. I just assumed Asche would make it because Merkin and Hayes were talking about it being likely.
