Sox may have interest in Maybin, per fake Cishek
thxfrthmmrs replied to soxfan49's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Except he hasn’t. He hasn’t gotten everything right, but even someone with sources doesn’t always get it right. I wouldn’t consider him reporting Sox were in on Harris as spamming, Sox could very well have been, and looking at the deal he signed it’s obvious Sox wouldn’t have beaten that. I will also say that while Jimmy was first to report Sox and Robert were talking extension, fake Cishek was first to report the two sides were close to a deal. -

Which MLBnetwork tweet? I have not see that discussed on this forum or on twitter. FS did not post an article on 1/1. It was a tweet linking back to Jimmy’s earlier article, and did not discuss status of negotiation. -

No doubt Y2Jimmy had sources, but he first reported back on 12/23. Fake Cishek said the sides were close on 1/1 and he was extended on 1/2, and that was the first time he mentioned a Robert extension. If he was only piggybacking off Jimmy, why didn’t he do it much earlier? -

The guy has sources. He said the Sox main RP targets were Harris and Cishek, and Diaz via trade. After Harris was signed he predicted Cishek to Sox and he was sign a couple days after. While they may have been an easy guess, he also called the Robert extension being very close right before the signing announced. The most telling of all was when he called the Mazara trade 20 minutes before announced when no one else had sources. It’s really not that crazy to think someone have sources connected to the org and are trying to make a name for themselves on Twitter. -

Disagree on that. The Cubs payroll are south of $150M in 2021 if they get out of the Bryant situation. Then on top of that they jettison their farm with a top 10 prospect in Lewis, 2 top 50 in Graterol and Larnarch who all could play this year or next, and that they also have a top 50 of their own in Hoerner who's now ready to play. They could become relevant again in a year or two if things pan out. -

For me the less of the 2 evils is the Twins. Twins with their farm and young talent is going to be good for a while, but I think Sox are in a even better position for the next 4-5 years. One is going to win the AL Central and the other is positioned well for the WC. I don't think I need them to be bad enough to give ways to Cubs for a quick rebuild. If Sox were to be relevant again in their city and regain some of the fanbase, the Cubs needs to suck for a while. -

What a dilemma, Twins mortgaging the future or Cubs getting a haul for a quick "rebuild". The Cubs could easily bounce back in 2021 if Lewis breaks out in the minors this year. -
Sox Sign Cishek; 1 yr, $5.25 mil + option (6.75, 750k buyout)

I forgot Jacob Lindgren was still with the org, and looks like he stayed healthy in the minors once he was activated from the IR in June. I would also put him in the list of potential 2021 Pen contributors if he finally gets past the injury bug. -

That's why having an option for year 2 made this an even better deal. I wonder if McHugh could have had for the same structure and similar money. I also expect at least one from the Burdi/Hamilton/Johnson/Foster group to play a key role next year, god forbids if they don't. -

Yes I love this deal, especially that it's 1+1. Hitters cannot square up on him, gets solid GB%, and his batting average against the last 4 years are elite level between .180 - .210 Increased BB% is a bit of a concern like you said, but there weren't any RP without concerns once Will Smith signed. -

The teams I would definitely put the Sox over right now are Brewers and possibly Reds. It was interesting that she had Reds making that big of a jump after a notable move. Looked into the writer’s Bio and she was a Dayton native, so go figure. -

We just need to start playing and winning games. As it stands now Twins are no worse than 5th or 6th until they shown last year was a fluke and they start to regress. I also see little difference between the 11th and 17th spot so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sox make a big jump when they start winning. -
Steve Stone: more bullpen help is coming

Could probably send every catcher in the org not named Grandal. But interesting that he said to work on his defense, McCann is a great defensive catcher just a poor framer. -

I wouldn’t buy into that Ohtani BS. Someone who’s not pitching in Japan minors at age 21 is not going to start at MLB level, especially when he’s have to focus on hitting as well. Best case he may be a RP on the pitching side, even that may be a bit iffy. I would like to see more reports on his athletic and defensive profile, he compares to closer to a Viciedo or Tomas to me. -

Ok that makes more sense. But even with a breakout year he’s not getting type of money. A bigger and longer term contract than his 2020 deal, sure, but he needs to string together at least 2 strong offensive years to really get paid, which is unlikely. Like I said, looking around the league I don’t think he will get a starting gig anywhere and Sox might be the best situation in terms of playing time - Madrigal will spend some time in the minors, Anderson has missed time each year, and, as CWS said, Ricky likes him enough that he will find his way into the lineup more often than under a new manager. -

You lost me right here, in what world would he get that deal even in a starting role? Also, looking around the league, what team would possibly give him a starting gig? Keep in mind the likes of Gennett, Kipnis, Dozier are still on the market. At least with Sox he know he could start for the first month or so. At this point he knows he’s getting a backup or at best a super sub role, he just needs to come down on the asking price. -

Not that I want Yolmer back, but the door is still open if Sox haven’t brought another bench bat and Yolmer is still unsigned. -

That should be a fireable offense unless Yolmer is having some sort of break out year. -

Iglesias is strictly an SS his whole career, not saying he could play 2B/3B but Yolmer has at least proven he could do that. Plus he’s a switch hitter, great locker room guy and knows the culture. -

I don’t know why they would prefer Iglesias to Yolmer. Holt at least a brings something to the table the other two don’t. -

Really wanted Cabrera, especially at that price. I guess they wanted a familiar name and it’s Yolmer at Sox Fest then. -
Cuban Phenom defecting Oscar Colas
thxfrthmmrs replied to PolishPrince34's topic in The Diamond Club
Also as I mentioned in the original post, I still think they would sign a top prospect in J2 if a more senior scout stick their neck out and pushes for the player, e.g. the Adolfo signing. -
Cuban Phenom defecting Oscar Colas
thxfrthmmrs replied to PolishPrince34's topic in The Diamond Club
Robert was a few months short of 20 when signed so he’s not super young as with a typical J2 signing. But the biggest difference I believe is Robert was a known commodity at the time, he had played for the Cuban national series for several years as well as the baseball World Cup, and succeeded against much older competition, which should be called out. There are a lot more information on him compared to even the most high profile J2 players these days. IIRC Robert also had several showcases after he defected and Sox had been heavily scouting him then. With J2 players teams are scouting them when they’re 13/14 year old these days and once the players have verbal agreement with the teams they stop working out for other teams or even go underground so the info on them is very limited (the main reason even a well-informed source like BA is delaying their LatAm prospect rankings). I think part of the issue also is Sox in recent years haven’t been very aggressive in scouting the LatAm market (e.g. in terms of scout head counts) so they’re letting other teams beat them to the punch in scouting the J2 players. Even if they were able to scout the player, those risk related question you mentioned for Robert is even more true for lesser known and younger kids.
