  1. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Aug 16, 2015 -> 06:22 AM) He wont sit on the market that long. With the trend of young pitchers exploding onto the scene and contributing right away, teams could be less inclined to throw away a first round pick and $100 mil at a pitcher with a career ERA of over 4.00
  2. Can't remember the last position player they Sox acquired that actually did better than his career norm (someone give me a name other they Dye).
  3. QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 07:51 AM) And his 5 year control clock will be 2 years old. He's essentially only missing 5 weeks of baseball. I think there's a good chance the Sox push him to Low A at the start of next season.
  4. Jordan Guerrero is kind of a legit dude. Would love to see a scouting report of what his repertoire is. If Stoltz still scouting down in the Carolina League these days?
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2015 -> 04:23 PM) Except he probably is about 19 in terms of baseball development True, but you can't look too much in that. Trying to learn (or relearn) something at 25 isn't as easy as someone who's learning at 17-18. The more important factor is he's having a major physical advantage than other 20-21 year olds he's been playing with since he's already hitting his physical prime.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 12:17 PM) Montas would be a repeat, which is rare though it does happen. My best guess on who you'll see there: Chris Beck (missed time), Michael Ynoa (40 man decision and missed time), JB Wendelken (40 man decision), Nolan Sanburn (missed time), Jacob May (missed time), Nick Delmonico (40 man decision and missed time), and Brandon Brennan (missed time) as the non-AA guy. Other possibilities: Robin Leyer, JB Wendelken, Jason Coats, Myles Jaye, Kyle Hansen, Danny Hayes What's the likelihood of Delmonico getting picked during the Rule 5? Don't think anyone's gonna give him a shot at the big league next year. How does the Triple A and Double A phase work again? Same pool of players as the ML phase, but without the 25 man roster requirement?
  7. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Aug 9, 2015 -> 09:37 PM) Anderson going to AAA soon? Or finishing at AA? I wouldn't mind bumping up Alvarez and Anderson each up a level, and let Rondon go back to A+. They could get a couple weeks taste of the new level and make adjustments in the off season as needed.
  8. Haven't seen recent scouting reports, but when he was signed, Ben Badler cited that he was the best defensive SS down in DR. A player that young should be given every chance to learn to play that position, unless he has outgrown it.
  9. Johan Cruz down in GF has probably pack on some muscle/weight the past 2 years. He went from a SS with 40 steals potential to a now 3B who hasn't attempted a steal this season. Though the spike in slugging is definitely a welcoming sign.
  10. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 9, 2015 -> 04:36 PM) Chris Bassitt looks pretty good. Ugh He was my guy, I was probably higher on him than anyone else on this board at the moment of the trade. That being said, he's won't stay this good, but he could be a very good #3 guy for a few seasons.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 9, 2015 -> 04:43 PM) Season from hell, highlighted perfectly by this weekend. Arrieta has become the best pitcher in the city. LOL
  12. It's there's one skill we have abundance of in the system, it's definitely speed. Can you imagine if we end up with Alvarez at 3B, Anderson at SS l, Micah at 2B, Engel at CF, and May at LF. All those guys have the chance to steal 40 bases a year!
  13. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 8, 2015 -> 01:34 PM) Any thoughts on Cody Winiarski? If I remember right, he was a bit of a prospect, almost died or something, then tried coming back last year and sucked. Anyways his numbers are terrific again. WHIP under 1, and the elite strikeout numbers that have been associated with him at every level. He's bit old for AA at 25 but also understandable given his pprevious injury. I think the illness was back in 2012. He's been healthy for 3 years now and been pitching in basically the same level since then. I will put him as one of those guys who had been a reliever since the low minor leagues and is a long shot from being anyone good in the majors.
  14. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 06:58 PM) He's not learning a new pitch. He had the changeup in college as well, he just didn't need it much just as he arguably doesn't need it much here (though it certainly would be a long term difference maker). His problem is chiefly fastball command and this is the level where he is most likely to improve it. He could get better command in the minors, but this is the level where hitters are most likely to punish you for your mistakes. When a guy has stuff like Carlos does, he needs to pitch against big talent or his mistakes may not get exposed. Developing, as opposed to learning, if you really want to get down to the specifics. I want to see how much of a leash you all are giving him before sending him down. If we're in a rebuilding situation, then I wouldn't mind giving longer leash. But we had the going-for-it mentality since Day 1, and we are still in the race at this point. At some point, you gotta take a step back and evaluate whether it's best of both world to bring up EJ and let Rodon develop down in the minors instead.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 01:31 PM) For his first couple starts he threw 0 changeups, so not using it much is clearly deliberate. He's working it in more with time, but he doesn't have it every game just yet. And he'd have a lot more opportunities and margin of error to work on that pitch in Triple A if given a proper game plan. Personally, I think it's silly to let a pitcher learn a new pitch on the fly in the big leagues, especially if he's only a 2-pitch pitcher so far, it would do damage to his confidence if he struggles, and I think the team will wants to go after the WC spot.
  16. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 11:51 AM) He had a bad game. He has had several very good games. He needs to throw strikes and attack the hitters. When he walks folks then he gets in trouble. Possibly based on the logic thrown out there we should send Sale down because he hasn't been all that sharp since the All-Star break and seven days off LOL. That's quite a strawman right there. If Chris Sale wasn't an established pitcher, only pitched 30 total innings in the minors, has serious control issues, and is only a 2 pitcher starting pitcher, then yea I'd say send him down, otherwise it's a totally different deal. Yea sure, Sale was a quick riser too, but he got a chance to work on his stuff in the pen for 2 years, and he should be the exception, not the rule. Carlos has been struggling for a while now, it isn't just one bad game last night. 4 out of his past 6 starts were pretty bad outings. I'd say it's time to bail him out and let him develop a bit more in the minors.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 10:24 AM) I'd say it's much more likely to get solved in the big leagues. In the minors his stuff is so overwhelming that people will expand the zone to defend against it. In the big leagues, the hitters have caught up and you can't overwhelm them with stuff. You have to throw strikes or you won't succeed. In the minors there are ways around that. Oh, and EJ will have the same issue when he comes up. You have a solid point, but that's not to say that pitchers couldn't harness their control in the minors. Furthermore, Rodon in the minors walked 17 batters in 34 innings, so it isn't as if this is only an issue in the big leagues. I think the bigger issue is his changeup is a below average, show-me pitch at the moment. Looking at his splits, opponents have an OPS of over 1.000 and wRC+ of 199 on his changeup. RH hitters have an OPS of nearly .900 against him, that just tells me that without a effective changeup, he will continue to struggle in the big leagues. Given the margin for error is a lot smaller in the big leagues, I think he's trying to avoid that pitch as much as possible. It will be interesting to get some insider info on whether throwing only 8% changeup is by design, or that he just doesn't have confidence in that pitch. All in all, it would be best if he's given the chance to work on this pitch in the minors.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 10:04 AM) Rodons problem is he has to throw strikes consistently. Does that get solved in AAA as opposed to the Majors? I don't see the difference. Even if he could throw strikes, he couldn't survive facing ML hitters 3 times by just throwing fastball and sliders. All in all, he was far from a finished product and was rushed up. Now that EJ is having the best stretch of his career and Shark is staying, I think the move makes sense.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 07:58 AM) If the moment a rookie struggles he needs to be sent to the minors, there wouldn't be a league. He was awesome the outing before last and has had the typical rookie struggles. He is workimg with Coop on his change up. No need to send him down, and no need to think Johnson would be any better. His good starts are far and few in between now and era is over 6.50 in the past month, this isn't "the moment he struggles" type of situation like you're saying. Johnson was our #1 prospect at one point, and he looks to be back to his normal self now. He gives us a better chance to win right now IMO.
  20. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 07:21 AM) I think he'd dominate AAA hitters and not develop the change up at the same time. I'm going to trust the White sox with pitching He would do that if his goal is to make it to the majors as fast as he could. But often times, minor league pitchers are also given instructions to work on specific pitch, this would be one of those scenarios.
  21. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 04:02 AM) Typical overreaction thread. Care to discuss? Right from the start, most people felt that he could have spent a couple more months in the minors. His WHIP has been in the 1.50 range for 2 months now. His walk rate is absurd, and he's a two pitch starter with poor command on those pitches and no confidence in his third pitch. Throw in the fact that EJ is ready for a promotion, and now with Shark staying, we have the luxury of letting Rodon develop a bit more in the minors. So no, I don't think this is based on overreaction to one particular start.
  22. QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 03:41 AM) I'd be okay with it cause it's obvious he needs work, but I think it's a confidence thing. I say let him stay but put him in the bullpen or go with six starters now that shuck is hurt. I think sending him to triple a would set his development back further mentally. It's hard to assume that such a move would set him back mentally, everybody reacts differently to this. Take EJ for example, he's regained his confidence and velocity in the minors. I think Rodon himself is aware that he needs work, and working on those areas in the minors would be more ideal. As long as you tell him that he's only a good changeup away from being a good major leaguer and that he would be called back up if he improves on that pitch, I think he should be fine. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 04:27 AM) what does scott boras say? Unless he demands a trade, I don't think there is anything he could do. I also don't think he has extra incentive to let his client explode in the big leagues when he could clearly use more work in the minors.
  23. This isn't overreacting on just tonight's start. Since we're keeping Shark for now and EJ is ready for another big league stint, we should let Rodon go back to the minors and work on his changeup and command. You can't survive in the big leagues throwing 93% FB and slider with terrible command. I think the move benefits us both in the short term and long term.
  24. Not too disappointed. I am glad need didn't trade Anderson/Danish/Adams for Cespedes. What are the chances of us trading Shark by 8/31 deadline if we're out of it?
