New 2016-17 Soccer Thread
3GamesToLove replied to LittleHurt05's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I think CONCACAF qualifying is tougher than people think. The culture/facilities shock in a lot of those countries is an adjustment for the US and Europe-based players to make, and oftentimes with passionate (or even hostile) crowds. Is it tougher than CONMEBOL? Nope. But it's not a cakewalk. -

QUOTE (zenryan @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 11:14 PM) CONMEBOL is crazy. 4.5 spots up for grabs Uruguay 16 Brazil 15 Argentina 15 Colombia 13 Ecuador 13 Paraguay 12 Chile 11 Gotta love how straightforward their qualifying is, too. Just regular old double round-robin. No nations getting byes or anything. Can't argue with that. -
I thought you meant BP South Side for a second.

ESPN's coverage of the Champions League back in the day was quite good, considering where the state of soccer coverage was in the US. Derek Rae is a gem, though Tommy Smyth less so. I wish FOX didn't broadcast any sports, myself. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 28, 2016 -> 08:57 AM) Awesome that NBC hired on Ian Drake for the Premier League games They didn't. That's just them airing an international feed; in this case BT Sport. Basically, unless it's Arlo White, you're hearing the English language feed that's broadcast all over the world, not something in-house from NBC. -

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 02:03 PM) Go Tottenham! COYS -
I think in most cases, if a team has a starter go 7 or more innings, it's obviously more likely that they'll win.

Just got a PS4 in June and only have Uncharted 4 so far, but really looking forward to FIFA and Final Fantasy XV. I'm an old-school FF fan (especially IV-X) and I'm cautiously optimistic that this one will right the ship.

QUOTE (chisoxt @ Aug 18, 2016 -> 07:56 PM) For some reason, nat e jones' advance statistics are very favorable and good -I can't see why All of his statistics are good. Look at his BRef page. -
QUOTE (Doc Edwards Shot @ Aug 8, 2016 -> 09:01 AM) All I have to say is that I sincerely hope that Abreu isn't Carlos Quentin or Gordon Beckham part II. A spectacular season followed by mediocrity which proved that the player wasn't for real and it was all just a flash in the pan in the beginning. I think his 2015 might be his true talent level. A good to very good hitter, maybe not a great hitter. And that's fine, and he's still a bargain at his contract.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 11, 2016 -> 09:52 PM) I would agree with the author this is the baseball gods taking care of Q. Very nice he made the team despite his team's pathetic support of him. Hope he gets to pitch in the game. I doubt he will, though. It'd be nice to have Ned go with Sale, then a righty, then Q third. Yost has already said he plans to use five starters for the first five innings, with Quintana in the fifth slot.

I'd be all over this...and I'm going to be in the city...but it's for our mini-honeymoon. Oops. -
QUOTE (Scoots @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 07:42 AM) Too early to start talking about rookie of the year for Timmy?? Who would be up against him for the award this year if he is in the running for it at the end? http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/sortable_rookie.jsp There's quite a few with a lot more PA than Anderson, to be honest.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 3, 2016 -> 09:51 AM) His consistency is unheralded, Kershaw aside I think you mean "unmatched," since whether or not his greatness/consistency is heralded doesn't jibe with "Kershaw aside." -
QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 3, 2016 -> 07:53 AM) Isner in another marathon match at Wimbledon. Fitting it's against Tsonga. 2 guys who are middle of the rankings forever and haven't taken that net step to the top. 5 years ago, I would've guessed Tsonga would be up there with Djokovic and Nadal. Tsonga's played his share of marathons as well. I was there for the match he played against Querrey in '14 over two days. It was 14-12 in the fifth, though due to the fact that both of those guys have giant serves it was "only" 3h39m I see what you mean on Tsonga/Isner, though I kind of think Isner has done what you could expect of him. There isn't a proven record of college guys coming through and becoming elite top-ten types. I think it's still just the one Masters final (Indian Wells in '12; it's he beat Djokovic in the semis and that's what launched him into the top ten) and the one major quarterfinal at the USO in '11. On tour I'd argue he's performed to expectations: 10 titles is actually fairly high for what his ranking has typically been, though 8(!) of those have been at US-based tournaments where the fields aren't always to the same standard as 250s elsewhere. Tsonga? I guess on a whole he has underperformed. Easy to forget he made his maiden major final at the same tournament Djokovic did in Oz in '08. Since then he's made a handful of semis, at least, and was ranked #5 for a time and has won a couple of Masters. In the end I think he's just another example of a guy who was unlucky to be playing in this era. The dominance of the big four is staggering compared to previous eras when even guys like Sampras didn't compete for titles each and every week. over the years you'd see "random" slam winners all the time. Not so much in this era. If you'd asked me three years or so ago, I'd've told you that while the big four were clearly ahead of everyone else guys like Tsonga, Ferrer, Berdych and Delpo were clearly in that next tier with separation from the pack. Tsonga's been in and out since then, Ferrer finally dropped off while Berdych is the same guy as ever. Of course Delpo has had his injuries and Stan broke into that their out of nowhere, too.

Yeah I got about $40 in codes (and I checked and you can use them in conjuction) and a s***ton of the free pairs too. Wonder what the list will look like. -
QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Jun 20, 2016 -> 01:12 AM) With the announcement of Detroit: Become Human, which looks amazing, I HIGHLY recommend Heavy Rain. They re-released for PS4. Doesn't require internet, isn't a shooter, but it has the best storyline of any game I've ever played, and the "choose your own adventure" aspect of it is well done. Oh, my brother LOVES that game. He studied creative writing and focused on the "choose your own adventure" aspect of games in some of his major writings and "Heavy Rain" featured heavily. I didn't realize there was a PS4 port. Cool, thanks.

You know that StubHub has always had fees, right? There was just a few years that they built the fees into the price of the ticket.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 18, 2016 -> 08:40 AM) I thought Connie was a stripper We basically did the same thing. Having two parties worked out really well. THe night before shouldn't be too crazy. A buddy had his future brother in law so hung over he almost couldn't walk down the aisle. That is not how you want to remember your wedding day. Congrats on the wedding. We should start a "wedding thread" and cover it live like our game threads lol Thanks! Yeah, the big bachelor party will be two weeks out from the wedding and the barcade crawl is six days before.

Got a PS4 the other day. I've been thinking about it for over a year now but the release of Uncharted 4 (I wound up getting the special bundle with this for $370 plus tax which I thought wasa decent deal) and FFXV coming soon I thought now was the time over the summer. I'm a pretty casual gamer and have no interest in VR and won't have 4K anytime soon so I'm not concerned about the new model coming out next year. For now just going to enjoy UC4 and get FIFA in the fall. I'll get The Show eventually too but I don't want to be buying both games every year, so I think I'll pick up MLB 16 early next year when I can get it cheap and that'll tide me over until '18. Any game recommendations? I have terrible internet so multiplayer isn't really an option for me. And I don't really like shooters. I have my eyes on Firewatch and the Middle-Earth game from a couple years back (big Tolkien fan).

Mine is a week from today. We're doing Sox game then Connie's afterwards. Then going back to our house to meet up with the bachelorette party (they're going to a local water park) and hang out, play whiffle ball, etc. I wound up organizing most of it myself since my best man lives in California and can't make it out until the week before the wedding when the Sox aren't home. But it's pretty basic and I'm looking forward to it. The only part that's a little tricky is figuring out driving since a lot of us are coming from different places and it'd suck to have everyone pay $20 for parking. I'm having my dad and her dad so uh, no thanks to the strippers. When my best man gets into town we're doing kind of a second smaller bachelor party with just a few of us from high school who haven't hung out in a long time. We're going to do a barcade crawl in the city.
