Sox claim RHP Gus Varland
From MLBTR write up: The Sox are surely more interested in his Triple-A output. Last year, he logged 33 1/3 innings for Triple Oklahoma City with a 2.16 ERA while striking out 29.3% of opponents and giving out walks just 6% of the time. This year, the results haven’t been as nice, but with a lot of bad luck. In 32 2/3 innings at Triple-A in 2024, he has a .372 batting average on balls in play and 18.5% home run per flyball rate, which undoubtedly helped produce his 53.1% strand rate. The 7.99 ERA isn’t pretty but his 23.8% strikeout rate, 8.6% walk rate and 44.3% ground ball rate are all decent metrics.

Thorpe to IL with flexor strain
Not good. Berroa recalled

Fedde/Pham/$ to STL, Kopech to LAD, Miguel Vargas + prospects to Sox
Since everyone loves to point out when former Sox do well, Fedde is getting smoked in his first Cards start. 5 ER and he’s not thru the 2nd inning.

8/2/24 White Sox @ Twins 7:10 Central........gently rocking.....gently rocking.....gently rocking
Ehhh if the axe was gonna fall imminently, they’d have canned him before the road trip.

Eloy to Baltimore
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/mlb/2024/08/01/white-sox-orioles-trade-jimenez/6c55e28e-5022-11ef-9728-3037305a6b0f_story.html This says Sox will also send an additional $1.5M if option is declined. So we’re down to Os eating like $1.9M.

Eloy to Baltimore
Id give Eloy maybe 2 weeks tops on that roster before he’s DFA. They have better options and won’t have nearly the patience the Sox had with his shenanigans.
-
Eloy to Baltimore
They did save ~$3.5M, but yah. I mean, no one should be surprised. The fact they found someone to even eat that much is frankly shocking.

Post deadline trades
Sox just released Knebel. So much for that.

Fedde/Pham/$ to STL, Kopech to LAD, Miguel Vargas + prospects to Sox
Lol, there is no way Sox went from Walker Jenkins, Brooks Lee & Emmanuel Rodriguez to Miguel Vargas. I could definitely have seen them asking for 1 of them, though. Maybe that is what Dan is saying, but its not really how it reads.

Fire Pedro Grifol
I keep pressing refresh here hoping for the news, but expect to be let down.

Fire Pedro Grifol
Yeah, I don't think Pham had any value at all, unfortunately.

The streak has reached 21. Raise a glass.
I am having a hard time finding 10 wins on the schedule.

Interim Manager
I hope we're not jinxing things here. I feel like if he was getting fired before this weekend, it would have happened by now.

Grade Getz’s 1st Trade Deadline!
I really wish the Sox would basically shut him down. There is 0 benefit to letting him pitch much more. If you're going to appease him (which frankly idgaf about at this point), maybe 1 start a week for 50 or so pitches, and then ramping down to 1 inning starts and then shut him down completely in early September.

Grade Getz’s 1st Trade Deadline!
I will give it a D+ overall, heavily weighted down by the three-way. Fedde/Kopech/Pham deal: D- Banks deal: B+ Eloy deal: B DeJong deal: C+ Not trading Luis Robert at his lowest value yet: A+ Not moving Crochet: C I am OK not trading Crochet at the TDL. The offers obviously were not there because I think he would have happily traded him if they were. Moving him for a pitching heavy return or for a headliner that is not elite just isn't what the org needs. The interest in Crochet will be significant this winter, and I think they'll do better then when the acquiring club doesn't have to worry about the innings limits situation.

Interim Manager
Sizemore gets my vote. I’d also be fine with any of Butera, Santos or Jirschele. Say no to Montoyo.
-
Moncada and Clevinger "returned from rehab assignments"
He’ll get a major league deal. It won’t be much money tho.
-
Fire Pedro Grifol
Well he’s 4/6 with a homer a 6 RBI in 2 games so I’d say Cards are pleased to date.

Fire Pedro Grifol
Ok, ok, I think its time. Just s%*# can the mumbling doof and lets move on with Grady running the show for the last 2 months of this s%*# show.

Still 50 games of pain left? Make it end.

idk why tbh, but I will always have a soft spot for Touki. If only the dude could throw the ball over the plate.

The Rest of the Season
At any point. You can put guys on waivers before the TDL. I agree on those three and have said the same thing, but I actually changed my mind on Flexen with the help of @Buehrle>Wood. I honestly didn't realize that Flexen was still arb eligible for 25 and 26. Considering he'll be dirt cheap again in 2025 and Bannister likes him, I think Sox should keep him around. Eat some innings rest of season, and give a 6th starter/long man for next season. By all accounts a good teammate as well. He'd almost certainly get claimed if put on waivers and you lose him for nothing but saving jerry a few hundred grand.
