I'd prefer to keep it at 30, but do admit that expansion would at least be entertaining to watch. I was too young to appreciate it last time it happened. I am definitely for evening out the schedule though. I think every team should play each team in the other league 3 times. Rotate home/away each season. 14 intra-division games (7 home / 7 away) and play one 3 game series home and away against other teams in same league but different division.

QUOTE (turnin' two @ Oct 10, 2017 -> 01:20 PM) Curious as to why everyone want to punt Alburquerque? I know he isn't Kenley Jansen or anything, but he has been fairly effective and the Sox aren't exactly dripping with bullpen options. 1.1 seems like a fairly small risk to me. Could probably get him cheaper. I guess it comes down to which direciont the Sox want to go. If they basically hold pat, they're not going to be pretty bad again, and may as well let younger guys that are a part of the future get time in the pen. If they actually want to try to cobble together a squad that may have the chance to hang around .500 past the deadline, I would agree that having another veteran in the pen at minimal cost can't hurt. But I'd also expect them to shoot a little higher the Alburquerque if that is their plan.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 5, 2017 -> 12:35 PM) They could have sent him down at any point this year, but didn't. It also doesn't mean that he won't rebound next year, and he will be given the chance to do so. I agree, but the point remains. Towards the end of the year, Tyler was one of the "vets" on this team. They weren't optioning him for Jake Peter. I wouldn't be surprised to see them give him another chance, and I also wouldn't be surprised to see them give it to Peter. What I think happens is Peter is added to 40 man, and Tyler gets one more chance. Peter is likely gone if he's not protected - probably not a top 10 rule 5 pick, but someone will nab him.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 5, 2017 -> 12:31 PM) A 24 year old who couldn't take time away from the same Tyler Saladino coming off of a back injury. Great point. The Sox weren't going to cut Saladino last year.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 5, 2017 -> 10:33 AM) I am going to guess out of this list the Sox protect Eloy, Gillaspie and Polo. Cordell is already on the 40 man roster so doesn't need adding. Guerrero will and should be added. He could be our 5th starter to begin the year.
-
Assuming there is space, I'd just protect Micker. If there isn't, then you roll the dice.

QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 02:51 PM) So on my count of the 40 man including only guys who we control for next year, even if they are on the DL, I have 34 guys. Putnam and Tilson are on it, Soto is not. That is correct. 33 + Tilson + Putnam - Pelfrey.
-
I still think the trade was a player light. Sale is that good.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 02:31 PM) Soto as well. He doesn't appear to be on the current 40 man (at least the one posted on whitesox.com).

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 01:42 PM) No shocks there. The Sox still have a couple of more spots they can open even as Pelfrey will be a FA, and a couple of other players who could go if needed out of the pen. Right. You got Pelfry, and then you have to imagine Beck, Farquhar and Alburquerque are all easy cuts. Then you still have Jacob May and Alen Hanson who likely aren't part of the future. That bring 40 man down to 27 before adding the likes of Eloy, Gillaspie, Peter, Clark, Guerrero, Polo, Basabe, and Walsh. Plenty of space to play with.

A little surprised about Liriano and Goldberg. The rest are not surprises. Does Goldberg need to pass through waivers to stay in the organization? I saw the post that says he remains in the organization as a non-roster player. How does that work - what is the difference between him, and say, Liriano. First time he's been outrighted perhaps?

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 03:53 PM) Wow that's a tough one! I mean technically it is under 3.5 but nobody goes beyond 1 decimal point. So who wins? You both have a case. Maybe it's a wash and you double the bet next year. What a bet. This blows my mind on many levels. What is his case? The number is 3.482 and he had the over of 3.5. Definitely won't be re-doing this bet next year. The daily updates I got from my friends and Buxton inched closer to 3.5 made it quite painful. Plus, the dude is really good. If he didn't start 2-50 or whatever, he would have been handily over 3.5. I'll take my winnings and move on. We do a Sox-Twins heads up win bet every year though that will continue. Not much suspense there this season.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 12:20 PM) I'm a subscriber but I don't see WAR past the first decimal. And I assume your bet was just based on fWAR? Because Buxton's rWAR is 5.1. Yes, fWar. Eno Saris confirmed for me. It is 3.48201.
-
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) If you did the calculation, isn't that the proof your friend is requiring? Yah, but he wants it from fangraphs. I don't necessarily blame him, we have some decent coin on the bet. He says that the numbers I am using to calculate it are also rounded, so it could change. Potentially true, but probably not enough to get it over 3.5. Basically we're just trying to find the number out two or three decimal places from fangraphs. Not sure if possible or not.
-
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 11:46 AM) Wow, I'm not sure what's crazier, that he finished with 3.5 (after his 1st half) or if it really will come down to the rounding on your bet! Haha yah! Pretty wild it came down to this. I looked pretty safe 4-6 weeks ago. Especially safe in May! But Buxton is a real nice player. Definitely excited for this bet to be over....the daily updates from my friends got exhausting (I live in MN). But, I am a numbers guys, and pretty confident I did the equations correct. But of course he wants further evidence, so I am trying to oblige.

Can someone with Fangraphs subscription do me a quick favor? I had a bet with a buddy on Byron Buxton's fWAR being under 3.5. The website only publishes the number to the 1st decimal, at least to non-subscribers, and guess what...it landed right at 3.5. I did the actual math and came up wit 3.482, but I'd like to confirm with Fangraphs (seems I should be able to get it taken out one decimal place..it is definitely rounded on the website). Do they publish the numbers past the 10th decimal for subscribers? Any other idea on how I could confirm? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 04:15 PM) Over/under how many weeks until he gets hurt again? Weeks? I am thinking days.
-
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 03:40 PM) It's shoulder surgery, probably exploratory, (the dreaded) and will not be good. As I've said: anything we get from Rodon going forward should be considered a bonus. The default position, until proven otherwise, should be "he's done". Yikes, that a negative take.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 02:05 PM) Why? Our fans have pointed out it's all a mirage. Why would other teams think otherwise and actually want him? That's what I don't understand. All the BABIP red flags. Only the Sox fans notice them? Nobody else? lolz.

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 01:32 PM) My gut tells me somewhere around 76-79 wins. Under .500 over the first half of the season, around or above .500 in the second half. Yah, but if Rodon, Giolito and Lopez are healthy, and Kopech really joins the club 4-6 weeks in, the pitching will just be too good lose 85-90 games. Giolito and Lopez will certainly take some lumps, but they're supremely talented. Bullpen would need some major improvement for it to matter, though. -

Yah, I think I've actually convinced myself that they could be decent next year. -
At this point I have to imagine the Sox will get some nice offers for Avi this winter.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 01:00 PM) A few wild guesses for signings and invites: SP Hector Santiago Clay Buchholz RP Zach Duke Joe Blanton Ernesto Freiri Plus some unknown MiLB free agents and wire claims. Santiago is probably done. Was throwing low 80s in rehab starts with the Twins AAA team. Someone may sign him to a minors deal, but his time in the majors may be over.

Staff: Rodon, Giolito, Lopez, Shields and Guerrero (or scrapheap FA like Chatwood or Ross) Pen: Jones, Minaya, Bummer, Goldberg, Danish, Fry and Connor Walsh or Brian Clark

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Sep 18, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) Tyson Ross (could be a potential reliever). I think he is the most intriguing guy on the list. Could probably be had for a Holland type deal.
