QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 10:17 AM) I think Gio and Kopech are up once the Sox secure the extra year of control. I'd be tempted to let Kopech start the year in the Sox rotation Ain't gonna happen. I'd be blown away if the Kopech throws a pitch in the majors before next September, and actually surprised if he even pitches for the Sox at all next season. 2019 is the year.

Wonder who goes with Davidson comes back. Delmonico deserves to stay. Could send Engel down for a couple weeks. Could end the Alen Hanson experiment.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 02:37 PM) Unconfirmed rumor it is Tony Kemp If it is Kemp, we should know by tomorrow.

QUOTE (Señor Ding-Dong @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 02:29 PM) Even if we lost him back to the A's, would we really be losing much? He's already 26 and got shredded during his ML stint, has only 6 games of AA play and only 2 at AAA (both during his rehab assignment). I am certainly no Covey fan, but at this point, we may as well keep him on the roster. Clearly he isn't going to be a ML starter, but maybe he can become a useful middle reliever. He can go back to the minors next year.
-
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 12:41 PM) So that's the same rule? I thought Nieto had to be on the roster all season? Covey was recalled from the minors? Covey has been on the DL. You can spend time on the DL, but must spend 90 active days on the 25 man.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 12:29 PM) No, they play every team in the NL West this year, but each team plays one team 2 home, 2 away. The Sox have the Dodgers. I meant NL West.
-
This series should be ugly.
-
Everyone in the AL Central plays everyone in the AL West 2 series this year, I believe.
-
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 12:16 PM) Why does he need 90 days on the roster? Rule 5 picks need 90 days on the roster to keep in your organization.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 15, 2017 -> 12:02 PM) Any word of who got demoted? Nevermind. Just takes Clippard's spot, I assume.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 08:28 PM) Brantley not on the 40-man. Don't expect him to come up. What's the point? Its either Alfredo Gonzalez or Rob Brantley. Alfredo Gonzalez is on the 40 man, but is OPSing .600 in AA. Brantley will be added to the 40 man, and then removed again after the season. If they really needed a spot, they could DFA Gonzalez now instead of after the season.

Realistic possibilities are as follows: Rymer Liriano Tyler Danish Rob Brantley Danny Farquhar David Holmberg Lucas Giolito Carson Fulmer Jacob May Brian Clark Connor Walsh Michael Ynoa Matt Purke Mark Lowe Danny Hayes DJ Peterson I suspect Covey will be added tomorrow, and whoever goes down will come back up in September. Willy and Davidson will be back on the roster when they get off the DL. Though I suppose Willy may not be back this year. Obviously they won't add all those guys. My guesses are as follows: Rymer Liriano Tyler Danish Rob Brantley Danny Farquhar David Holmberg

I imagine he will be on the roster in September.

QUOTE (turnin' two @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 01:24 PM) Seems right to me. I would like to see them sign maybe a pair of starters (and hopefully they have better luck than this year). For the rotation at the beginning of next year there is Rodon and Lopez ready. Shields is still there, but quite replaceable (obviously) they could have innings for guys like Clay Buchholz or Matt Moore. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/08/2017...agent-list.html Plenty of sign and flip candidates. More will likely come after the non-tender date. Shields is going to be run out there in hopes of cobbling together 10-12 starts and getting moved. No reason not to, really. But yah, all depends on if Sox want Giolito, Fulmer, Stephens and Guerrero to earn it in AAA. Could conceivably put any of those 4 in the opening day rotation, and could also throw Danish in the fire as well. Danish is a reliever in my mind and had virtually no chance to start in the bigs, so I hope they just put him in the pen.

QUOTE (iWin4Ron @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) 2018: Lost year, hopefully the management can make some more (but discrete) moves. Wouldn't mind picking up a handful of free agents, especially relivers/starters on minor deals to flip them at this deadline or next years. Just keep plugging away. I've said it before and I will say it again - the Sox should just go to battle with what they have next season. Maybe sign a couple relievers we could fix and flip, and perhaps maybe 1 arm in the rotation to make Giolito, Fulmer, Stephens and Guerrero earn their opportunities in AAA. But on the offensive side, we just need to give the guys we have at bats. The outfield is covered between Avi, Leury, Delmonico, Engel, Alen Hanson, Willy Garcia, Liriano, Cordell, May and Tilson. Plenty of guys that need MLB at bats. Corners are covered with Abreu, Davidson, Delmonico, Saladino, Gillaspie, Hayes and DJ Peterson. MI is covered with Anderson, Moncada, Yolmer, Saladino, Hanson and even guys like Jake Peter and Eddy Alvarez. I really see no reason to sign any bats to ML deals. Bring some guys in on minor league deals and start them in Charlotte - sure. But rest of this season and next should be used to get the fringe guys as any plate appearances as possible. Hopefully by 2019 we've found a 3 or 4 of those fringe guys that are worth keeping around.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 10:13 AM) No one has to clear waivers from Houston to get to the Sox. They have the first choice. That's why this Kemp thing makes little sense. Why would it be a PTBNL or cash? Because the Astros couldn't trade him if they hadn't put him through waivers yet. Which they probably had not because why put a prospect (using that term loosely here) in AAA through waivers? Therefore, the PTBNL status is merely a procedural move while the Astros put Kemp on waivers and allow the Sox to claim him, completing the deal. No idea if that is actually what is going on here, but it makes some sense if Kemp is the guy. But as I said earlier, we'll know in a couple days if it is Kemp.
-
I've always been on the 2020 bandwagon, but it looks like the Sox could at least have a very interesting young core by 2019. If they are active in free agency leading up to the 2019 season, I think that team would have a chance to be the first of many division contending teams.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 08:59 AM) Let me put it this way. would you rather have Tony Kemp and a million dollars, or nothing? THAT is really the choice here (assuming the PTBNL thing is right?} I think at least 90% of the folks on here would be quite pleased if the PTBNL ends up as Tony Kemp. If it is, I think we'll know within a couple days. If we don't know within a couple days, it isn't Tony Kemp.
-
Yah I have to imagine the Sox may get something interesting. Otherwise why even bother helping the Astros.
-
Could still be Kemp, but Sox would need to claim him on waivers.
-
Kemp is on the Astros 40 man. But I suppose with Sox having AL worst record, that could be easily solved.

Anyone know the list of guys out of options next year? -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 11, 2017 -> 03:29 PM) He was going to catch on to the list, but then he dropped it. I laughed

That change looked nasty last night.
