  1. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 11:12 AM) Where will Gillaspie fall on the prospect list for the Sox? He was the Rays' #10, but I imagine he'll be quite a bit lower in our system. Somewhere in the 20s? 50 FV on MLBPIPELINE. Cordell is the last 50 FV, and he is at 18. So I'd guess somewhere between 17 and 19.
  2. Pretty nice deal. By no means is it super exciting, but Gillaspie will be a nice DH/1B option for the next few years. A few short months ago, he was a pretty legit prospect. Seems like a good deal for the Sox. Obviously Jennings has a couple more years of control, but the chances of both him being effective and the Sox actually competing in 2019 are pretty low. Nice move. He should slot in right around Cordell in the backend of the Sox top 20.
  3. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 08:35 PM) He's better than Hanson by about 20 miles. Not sure why Hanson is around. The Sox should be taking chances on just about any young player with potential upside they can get off waivers at the moment.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 12:18 PM) I don't mind that, but you also need people to eat innings, and a lot of these young guys will hit their inning limits come August. I've thought about Pelfrey to the bullpen before though too. His effectiveness, if I recall, actually goes up the second time people see him, but he is absolutely destroyed the third time. As a reliever, he might not be a terrible pitcher. Plus, you can put him back in the rotation for a few starts down the line if need be.
  5. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 10:02 AM) Chicago White Sox‏Verified account @whitesox 53s53 seconds ago More The #WhiteSox have acquired minor-league outfielder Ryan Cordell from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for RHP Anthony Swarzak. Looks like the deal is finalized^ Glad to see it finalized.
  6. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 10:00 AM) Yeah and a team could easily say that they want to take on all/most of the contract in order to give up less. True. I didn't mean it in absolutes, but moreso that I hope we're open to eating a good chunk of his salary IF it improves the return.
  7. I am sure he is available. But doubt the offers are there.
  8. I hope the Sox are willing to eat the ~$5M and try to actually get something interesting back.
  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 08:53 AM) This bolded term...this basically means a regular on a lousy team, correct? I saw it yesterday and didn't know what it meant. At it again this morning, I see. Honestly though, the fact that nothing official has come makes you think there may be a hitch. With Cordell's reported back issues, it makes some sense. But would seem to me the Sox would have explored that before agreeing to the trade?
  10. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 25, 2017 -> 10:07 PM) What happened to Coats? Rays claimed him off waivers last summer. Pretty sure he tore his ACL couple days later.
  11. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 25, 2017 -> 08:03 PM) See, I couldn't disagree more. I don't like this much at all. We've already got like 2-3 guys that can play center field. Presumably, this guy will come up and play left when Melky is gone, but Adam Engel is actually deserving of playing time right now and I think when Garcia returns, he deserves another chance as well. Would have much rather gotten an intriguing arm or something. I get the Swarzak was signed as a minor league FA, but let's not ignore what he accomplished up here; nor should we ignore his stuff. Dude can bring mid-90's heat with a wicked slider that he currently has penchant for locating wherever the hell he wants. I'm frustrated by this idea of comparing the value a player had when he was initially signed with the value he received back when traded. What we need to be considering is the value the player has given his current performance. If that means we get some mediocre prospect who might become a 4th OFer if he's lucky, I'd prefer to just f***ing let the guy close for the rest of the year and see if he'll resign with you. I should probably wait until I actually see this guy play, because it sounds like he is one hell of an athlete, but we are not short on athletes, from what I understand. Im not thrilled about the return either, but it's always better to get something rather than nothing for a team in the position of the Sox. Seems like some scouts really like him, and FG called him a 2nd division starter. I would have preferred a couple lower level guys that had more upside but more risk, but I'm OK with it overall. Just have a bit of a logjam of AAAA Of types now.
  12. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 25, 2017 -> 07:45 PM) Any idea how close he is to returning? I wonder if the delay in official annocument has to do with medicals. Bruce Levine (FWIW) did say it wouldn't be announced tonight. Back issues aren't exactly ideal.
  13. Meh. Certainly not exciting but whatever. Looks like he is currently on DL.
  14. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 25, 2017 -> 02:57 PM) I wouldn't object to keeping Melky around. When Abreu DH's, Melky plays LF and when Melky DH's Abreu can play 1B. Most of the Sox best hitting talent is a few years away anyway so Melky wouldn't be blocking any young talent. I got nothing against the Melkmeister. Nah. Between Avi, Engel, Delmonico, Leury, Willy, Liriano, May and Tilson we have enough options to cover to OF for the next 1.5 years. No reason to resign Melky.
  15. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 25, 2017 -> 04:44 PM) Please explain yourself I can't watch because its a damn day game again. I see 4 Sox have been HBP. Abreu twice. Someone said both of Abreu's look intentional. I asked if he did something to deserve it. Admittedly its a bit tough for a position player to do something to deserve being beaned, but seems a bit odd. Just curious cause I can't watched. Explained.
  16. QUOTE (Nokona @ Jul 25, 2017 -> 04:41 PM) Both Abreu HBPs were as intentional as it gets. Did he do something to deserve it?
  17. Did any of the HBP look intentional? Can't watch today.
  18. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 25, 2017 -> 09:37 AM) Wrigley ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Dumbest thing in the world.
  19. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jul 24, 2017 -> 04:21 PM) Anybody else surprised by the general attitude towards Melky's trade value in the media? I'm not suggesting he has a ton of value and should net us a top 100 prospect, but I keep reading that he has pretty much 0 value. Mlbtraderumors had an article about tradeable Of'ers and suggested we'd have to pay all of Melky's contract just to be able to get rid of him. Am I missing something? He's top 14 in OPS among AL Of'ers (and that's including a slow 1st 100 ab's) and isn't THAT bad in the field. I definitely wouldnt call him good in the field, but he's not an absolute butcher in the field that hurts the team either. He's a flat out professional hitter that can give really good AB's to most contenders for the rest of the season in my opinion. Or am I wrong on this? And I'm usually more pesimistic about sox players than most. Not really. Melky is a solid bat. But he is below average in the OF and is paid like a star. If the Sox pick up the whole tab, they may get someone who has a chance to be a big leaguer someday, but there just isn't going to be much of a market. A much better player in JD Martinez just got a pretty awful return last week. To expect more for Melky is nuts, though I wouldn't put it past Hahn.
  20. Building quite the bullpen down in Charlotte, soon to be Chicago.
  21. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 24, 2017 -> 01:58 PM) I'd be shocked if a contender did not pick up Swarzak to help reinforce the bullpen for the stretch. Swarzak has the 7th highest WAR for relievers in the mlb this season and great peripherals. I'm a bit surprised he has not been dealt yet. Honestly, me too. Must mean nothing overly intriguing has been offered. But at this point, he is our best chip of guys who are likely to be moved, so maybe Hahn is just holding out for now.
