  1. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 20, 2013 -> 10:58 AM) See, I disagree with you here. I think if Hahn is seriously considering trading one of young SPs for a young bat, he'll definitely look at a guy like Johnson on a short-term deal. We have tons of cash right now and very little to spend it on that won't cost us a draft pick. Signing a project SP where the only downside is losing some money is exactly the type of low-risk, high-reward moves we should be considering. Plus I think our pitching depth is incredibly overrated. Don't get me wrong, I love our current 1-5 and think Rienzo is a great insurance policy as our #6 starter, but take out Quintana or Santiago and the complexion of the rotation suddenly changes and that depth is basically gone IMO. However, I think you can mitigate that by adding a guy like Johnson to the mix. Look at what happened to us this past year, you simply can't have enough pitching depth. Now, if Hahn wants to hold on to both Quintana & Santiago then it's a totally different story. But we shouldn't be afraid to spend at a position of strength if an opportunity presents itself there. Hahn will have to be creative to get this team competitive again and this may be the type of move to help get us there. Wonderfully said. Johnson makes a ton of sense. Certainly a risk, but as you said, the exact type of risk a team in the SOX position should pursue - that is if competing next year is a priority to the FO. There are many here who would say it isn't, and shouldn't be. Not that I necessarily disagree, but I'd always prefer to watch a winner.
  2. QUOTE (oldsox @ Oct 20, 2013 -> 08:46 AM) Not true. Denver Post just had a column stating Astros had second highest bid at $50 Million, Rangers and BoSox at $40 ish. There are certainly conflicting reports on the matter.
  3. I would be all over Johnson if possible in the $6-$9M range on a one year deal. Can never have too much good starting pitching. That said, I second the other opinions that we have other more important needs. C and 3B should be priority number 1 and 2 for now.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 1, 2013 -> 10:40 PM) Let's try closer to $18 million. Choo is a terrible fit for the Sox right now. He's a platoon player at this point and he's a poor defender anywhere he plays in the outfield. Ellsbury is a different story. He's a plus defender, has a well rounded skill set, and is entering his age 30 season. If you gave him 6/$120, he'd probably return surplus value for at least the first 4 years of the contract, and he has the skill set that will age well so it could legitimately be for all 6. If the Sox are willing and able to spend and get their guys - we'll say Ellsbury (6/$120), Abreu (7/$70), and McCann (4/$60), which is also $45 million added to the payroll, give or take how they set up the contracts - you can look at a lineup of Ellsbury - CF Semien - 2B Abreu - 1B McCann - C Dunn - DH Garcia - RF De Aza - LF Ramirez - SS Gillaspie - 3B That team at least gives a shot. That's not what I'd do, but it's an option and that team can absolutely be competitive. Like you said, not necessarily what you want to see, but it sure would be much more fun to watch.
  5. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Oct 1, 2013 -> 11:09 AM) I would like to do sign Abreu and plug him at 1B with an occasional spell by Dunn. Sign or trade for a defensive CF. Let LF/1B/DH all duke it out with Abreu almost always starting. RHP 1B Abreu (occasional Dunn spell) DH Dunn LF Viciedo/De Aza LHP 1B Abreu DH Vicedo LF De Aza Huh? If you platoon DeAza, he isn't playing against LHP. Tank needs to be out there agaisnt both LHP and RHP. Prior to this season, he raked LHP and couldn't hit RHP. For some reason, and maybe even encouragingly so, his splits nearly flipped this year.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 26, 2013 -> 02:38 AM) This "idiot" got 32 on his ACT. ahhh...thats a great one. What a beaut.
  7. I couldn't handle that dudes writing after the first few sentences / paragraphs.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2013 -> 01:11 PM) I've tried to figure out anyone who made sense as obviously an improvement over a Gillaspie/Keppinger platoon and I've struggled. Outside of the guy in Minnesota there's not a lot of high-flying 3b prospects right now that I can recall who would be a sensible target if the Sox moved one of their starting pitchers, and the FA class is more than weak: About the only bat that could possibly help at 3b would be to sign Jhonny Peralta and move him to 3b, but there's the whole "signing a guy just off a steroid suspension" thing to deal with. You have any other ideas? I'd rather get a young guy in there, but Peralta wouldn't be a terrible stop gap if they don't want to subtract from the rotation. Cowart (LAAA), Cecchini (Boston), Gallo (Texas), Arenado (Rockies), Seager (LAD), Cuthbert (KC) would all be guys I would target and float Quintana's name. Some of those listed would obviously be very tough to get. Other interesting names would be Moustakas and Jed Gyorko. I wonder if the Royals would listen if we were offering Quintana. Gyorko may be tough to get ahold of, but the Pads could use pitching, and he has had a bit of disapointing year.
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 2, 2013 -> 09:19 PM) Is DeAza any good in left or a disaster in both left and center? Do you even watch the games?
  10. SS Alexei Ramirez 2B Gordon Beckham 3B Jeff Keppinger / Connor Gillaspie DH Adam Dunn 1B Dayan Viciedo RF Avisail Garcia CF Trade / FA Signing LF Alejando De Aza C Josh Phegley BN Jordon Danks BN Connor Gillaspie / Jeff Keppinger BN Miguel Gonzales / Tyler Flower BN Luery Garcia SP Chris Sale SP Josh Johnson SP Hector Santiago SP John Danks SP Erik Johnson C Addison Reed SU Nate Jones SU Matt Lindstrom RHP Jake Petricka RHP Daniel Webb LHP Donnie Veal LHP Charlie Leesman My guess for the opening day 25 man above. There will probably be a bit more movement, but my guess is Quintana traded this offseason for 3B prospect close to the majors (hopefully takes over for the Keppinger / Gillaspie platoon early on). Nice looking young bullpen, and great looking young rotation. I like Josh Johnson as guy for the SOX buy low on. One or two year deal at $16-$20 M. Obviously could get burned by it, but I think it is a solid gamble, especially w/ all the money off the books at that point. Offense will still struggle, but would really love to see the SOX go out and get a real CF. Obviously Ellsbury would be more than ideal, as would Choo - but I expect Hahn to get a solid offensive contributor out there. I think the SOX would move De Aza if they had any solid offers, which would keep Tank in LF (which is fine with me, for now anyway). Sox would then be in the market for a 1B. I would love Morales.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 31, 2013 -> 11:50 PM) Hopefully it'lll let management know we still need help offensively to compete against the best. ...uhhhh....hahahaha
  12. I didn't have a problem with it, except that he was using his left hand. C'mon man, use a bat or something.
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 08:27 PM) Viciedo getting blown away by this awful pitcher Yeah, it's ugly.
  14. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 09:30 AM) Right, but they're already down an outfielder because of Wells and might be down another if Rios is traded, so either way it seems like they'd want to get an outfielder up today. Tekotte I would presume?
  15. Anybody know who is coming up for Wells? I am assuming Leesman would be the 26th man for the doubleheader and optioned after the game tonight.
  16. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 01:28 PM) Mark Reynolds DFAd by the Indians. He's probably the best 3b FA next offseason. God no.
  17. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 01:04 PM) Wells got put on waivers. From that point, teams had 3 days to decide whether or not to put in a claim. The Phillies won the claim, meaning that no AL team put in a claim nor did any NL team with a worse record than Philly. Once the claim was awarded, the Sox and Phillies had 24 hours to negotiate, though those negotiations probably consisted of Hahn telling the Phillies "He's yours now" and there you go. Yes, the Sox could have pulled him back but I don't see the point. That is what I figured, just wanted it confirmed. Thanks.
  18. Not that it matters in the slightest bit, because Casper Wells is brutal, but does this mean the SOX put him on waivers, someone claimed him, and the SOX just said have him? I thought that past July 31, if someone was claimed on waivers, the teams had a day to figure out a trade, pull the guy back off waivers, or let the other team have the player. Obviously the SOX just said have him, but usually I thought there was a day or two lag time before you know what the outcome of the claim is.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 10:11 AM) I'd be shocked if they weren't already out there. Indeed.
  20. QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 03:20 PM) Chances are Dunn is the DH with Tank at 1B. Dunn has been really good for 2 months now, when are you haters gonna cut him some slack. We want obp on this team right? his obp the last 2 months has been in the .390s. Just reading this thread for the first time, but you couldn't be more right. Dunn has been the best player on this team sans Chris Sale for a few months. Not saying much, but he is far from the crux of the SOX problems at this stage. Let him play out his contract and he gone.
  21. I'd consider it due to all our LHP, but probably not. I like Johnny and he's got plenty left in the tank.
  22. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 11:32 PM) Why does everyone think DET got hosed? They just improved their infield defense -- their biggest weakness by far -- by about 200%. They're the team in the Majors that needs offensive production from their SS the LEAST. Because they gave up their 2nd best prospect for that, who ended up on a division rival. Sorta weird.
  23. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:16 PM) I'm more worried about what our system would do to Garcia than Garcia himself. I don't see him spending much time in the "Sox system". He'll likely be the RF with the big club starting August 1.
  24. I am starting to think it is a possibility that no major moves are made. Maybe Lindstrom gets moved, maybe a surprise or two. But I wouldn't be shocked at this point if Peavy, Rios, Ramirez, Dunn, De Aza etc. are in a SOX uni on August 1. With that said, I wouldn't be upset. We don't want Hahn to back down and take a mediocre package for his major chips, just because. Worst case scenario, Peavy is sportin' a SOX jersey next spring. Oh well. This organization needs bats -- and Hahn needs to assert himself as the GM of this team. Getting swindled wouldn't do him any favors. I am willing to see how this offseason plays out if no major moves are made. I highly doubt the SOX go into 2014 without some fresh face of the major league caliber.
