QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 01:13 PM) No thanks. He's been washed up since 2011. MILB contracts mean nothing. If he sucks, you release him. I don't think anyone is penciling him into the 2016 starting lineup.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 01:10 PM) For some reason I was thinking about Carlos Quentin yesterday so I looked up his BR page, saw how old he was and thought how sad it was that he was done. I saw him during his last season vs. the Cubs and he could barely stand. Now, he is said to be attempting a comeback, and most assuredly will have to sign a minor league contract. Supposedly he would market himself as a 1B/DH/OF. Sign me up. If he can't do it, so what? He won't be healthy the entire season, but when he is, he is exactly the type of hitter the Sox need. I'd love to see TCQ get another chance. Great guy, whose career was derailed by unfortunate injuries.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 12:58 PM) No way do you trade a Top 20 pitcher in MLB for prospects. You have to get 2 MLB ready players for him plus 1-2 prospects in 8-15 range Not only is he a top 20 pitcher in MLB, he is young, left-handed, under team control for 5 more seasons (2 of which are team options), at an AAV of $8.65M. It literally doesn't get more valuable than that. He's worth a ton, and I suspect he won't be traded unless some other team really, really, really wants him and is willing to give up a TON to get him.

QUOTE (aboz56 @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 12:53 PM) Any chance the Sox bring him back on a one-year deal so he finishes his career where it all started? If Quintana is traded, I could see it.
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 12:48 PM) Quintana should not be traded unless a team with a strong farm system gives the Sox 1 of their top 5 prospects along with a few in the 8-15 range. You're severely underrating Quintana's trade value.

Byung-ho Park bidding rights won by Twins, $12.85 m
ChiSox59 replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 11:46 AM) I think LDF is referring to the brief discussion the two of you had yesterday on if the Cubs were the winning bidders, what would they do about 1B with Rizzo already there. It's all moot now since its the Twins that won the bid. Just trying to clarify is all. Anyway. Twins lineup looks even more potent now with the power potential in that lineup. And their defense looks embarrassingly bad. Sano anywhere but DH is a good news for the Sox. Sano at 3B and/or LF for more than a handful of games would be comical. Assuming Park isn't much of a defender, so he'd probably find himself at DH most of the time with Mauer at 1B (if they get the deal done). But Joe will need his rest, so Park will definitely get some time in the field. The Twins really screwed the pooch with Mauer. He is plenty athletic enough to play other positions. THey should have stuck with him in the OF, or at least given him a chance at 3B. -
The Red Sox may have the bullets to get Sale, but it'd take most of them. It ain't happening.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 11:40 AM) I was thinking Q to the Blue Jays if he does get traded with the package starting at Pompey. The Jays can't possibly move away from Pillar in CF and they already have Revere under control in LF for 2 more years so makes sense for them to use Pompey as a trade chip while they are in World Series mode. Not too sure about the rest of their farm system though. Pentecost is a nice C prospect from the 1st round a couple years ago, but missed the entire year with shoulder surgery. A package centered around Pompey (a player in the mold of one we already have locked up long term, who happens to play the same position), and Pentecost for Quintana would be very disappointing. If you trade Q, it is for a kings ransom. That isn't it.

White Sox make qualifying offer to Jeff Samardzija.
ChiSox59 replied to LittleHurt05's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Nov 7, 2015 -> 11:42 AM) I'm not ripping them but they should've moved him in June when they had the chance. They're in the "paid to get it right" business and they should've traded him. Oh well. Time to go out and have an aggressive offseason. Hard to say that when you have zero clue what the offers were. The Sox were ahead of the Rangers and 1 GB on the Blue Jays at the the deadline. They shouldn't have traded Shark unless they got a nice piece, which I am guessing wasn't materializing. The benefit of hindsight in this case makes all the difference. -
QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Nov 7, 2015 -> 12:27 PM) My Realistic Wishlist for this Offseason: 1) Let Shark walk in FA, receive compensation pick 2) Resign Alexei to a 2 year deal $12 million deal with a $3 million team option for '18 (Ramirez made it clear he wants to stay and retire on the South Side) 3) Go after Matt Weiters and lose out on him courtesy of ATL on a lucrative deal, settle on a 1 year deal with AJ Pierzynski worth $3.5 million with a $2 million dollar player option for '17 4) Sign Garrett Jones to MiLB deal, depth in case of Abreu injury, could have a Dan Johnson-type year with Charlotte 5) sign Dom Brown to a MiLB deal, depth in case of Melky/Avi injury, All-Star in '13 6) Hire Rick Renteria as bench coach, seems to be popular choice among fans, managerial experience 7) Sign Juan Uribe back as 3B depth, veteran clubhouse presence 8) Sign Shaun Marcum/Bronson Arroyo as a RHS, Shark is gone and a vet RHS is needed, should be cheap 9) Sign Neal Cotts as an extra reliever, solid statline 10) Hopefully this is the South Side's final year with a protected first rounder for a LONG time, could make a splash with Weiters or go safe route and bring in Howie Kendrick for 3 years/42 million, KW loves him 11) Deal Courtney Hawkins, Spencer Adams, Carlos Sanchez, Jacob May, and Chris Beck for Todd Frazier and lock him up for big money, hopefully our long term 3B 12) Trade Saladino for a promising young C (Plawecki or someone of lesser magnitude like Andrew Knapp) A '16 roster of: C: Pierzynski, Flowers 1B: Abreu 2B: Kendrick, Johnson 3B: Frazier, Uribe SS: Ramirez DH: LaRoche LF: Cabrera CF: Eaton RF: Garcia, Thompson Rotation: Sale, Rodon, Quintana, Danks, Montas 'Pen: Robertson, Duke, Jones, Jennings, Webb, Putnam, Petricka Looks promising Hahaha, putting the band back together, eh?

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 5, 2015 -> 01:19 PM) They can't decline his option and then offer him a QO anyway. Doesn't work that way. This. That whole scenario isn't possible.
-
My thoughts are nothing original to what has already been said in this thread, but I am little surprised the Sox declined the option. Alexei is a much better option at SS than anyone else on the 40 man, despite being dog s*** for the first couple months of 2015. I highly doubt the Sox will look to the top of market (Desmond), with Anderson waiting in the wings. So Alexei still makes a ton of sense. Now if they think they can get him on a 1 year deal for less $, with perhaps an option for next year if Anderson doesn't continue to develop as the Sox hope - great. But I have a hard time believing Alexei won't be able to top something like a 2 year deal in excess of ~$16M, and I don't think the Sox should commit to him for two seasons. I like Alexei, but I also wouldn't be heartbroken if they go in another direction. He's been a very good, and very underrated player for the Sox during his time. I still think he is an above average ML SS, despite the numbers showing otherwise last season. But he isn't the most cerebral player, and perhaps someone with a higher baseball IQ up the middle would help the entire defense.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 08:55 PM) Plawecki/Norris and Frazier are my top trade targets for CWS with Hawkins, Sanchez, Saladino, Erik Johnson, May, Nieto, Beck, and Coats all being available to deal (Montas, Fulmer, Rodon, Thompson untouchable). As much as I would love Weiters on the South Side, his price isn't right and ATL will almost surely lock him up. Flowers isn't the answer and the hopefully contending Sox have no answer on the farm. A young C like Plawecki or Norris would be the answer for CWS. I could see 2-3 (Erik Johnson, Engel, Sanchez) prospects getting these deals done. Todd Frazier is a pipe dream that CWS has virtually no shot with (I'd offer Adams, Michalczewski, Hawkins, Beck for). Danks and LaRoche both off books. My dream 2017 WS Champion CWS: C: Plawecki, AJ 1B: Abreu 2B: Johnson 3B: Frazier SS: Anderson, Ramirez (diminished role) OF: Eaton, Melky, Avi, Thompson Rotation: Sale, Montas, Quintana, Fulmer, Rodon Pen': Robertson, Duke, Jones, Webb, Putnam, Albers, Danish, Jennings Lineup: Eaton, Anderson, Melky, Abreu, Frazier, Avi, Thompson, Plawecki, Johnson I bet Cinci would take that trade. I'd start with less, and think it could get done for less. Keep Sanchez. Trade Micah if he has any value in a move, if not, just keep him. Montas should be available IMO. Trance should be far from untouchable, but you need to get something legit to be moving him after his debut. Other than that, I like it, and think it's a fairly realistic guess at what the 2016 roster should look like, sans Anderson, if the Sox want to reload. I also see the Sox picking up someone like Fowler or Jackson or if had already made those moves.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 04:38 PM) I don't think it's a no-brainer to pick up Alexi's option. Unless sentimentality is part of the deal. Saladino as good at 6% the cost. Spend the money elsewhere. Except Saladino isn't even close to as good of a MLB SS as Alexei.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 12:20 PM) Realistically, Alexei will be our SS next year. I really believe that. MAYBE the Sox could look at Desmond at 3rd, but I don't see us spending big money on a new SS, with bigger holes at 3B and C. Exactly. Picking up Alexei's option is a near no-brainer IMO. Sure, the Sox may be paying him a $1-2M more than his "market value", but they have a replacement a year away and the FA market is void of legitimate 1 year options that are going to be both cheaper and more or equally effective on the field (as Alexei). Pick up the option, and worry about 3B, C and a legitimate corner OF.

Justin Morneau or another year of LaRoche
ChiSox59 replied to klaus kinski's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 10:15 AM) He either ways 400 pounds or is skinny and unrecognizable now I bet. The former. -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 03:16 PM) I'd like Gyorko if they paid some of his contract but they've had the same first baseman for the last four years and he's coming off his best season yet. I wonder how cheap Chase Utley would be. I was thinking that the other day, regarding Utley. Not sure I'd prefer him over Sanchez, but he could be a decent option on the cheap. What is his D like these days?
-
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 02:31 PM) I would be all for going after Wieters for the right price at 4/64 I'd pass. My interest would top out around 4/45 and I don't think that will get it done. Not even close. People, this is 2015, soon to be 2016. $11M AAV doesn't get you that much anymore.

State of the White Sox Address a Position
ChiSox59 replied to rowand's rowdies's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Oct 28, 2015 -> 08:35 AM) I didn't get to watch Montas. How did he look? Statistically seemed decent. Really? You spend an awful lot of time posting on a White Sox message board for a guy that didn't happen to catch any of Montas' outings this season...You think you'd tune in just to see that. -
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 28, 2015 -> 11:13 AM) If they could move Danks and go with Johnson and Buehrle as 4/5, I'd be fine with it. I'm not moving Quintana though unless I get a ton back. Rest assured, nor are the White Sox!

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 02:36 PM) You are right. Posey beats out Salvy on production with .318, 19, 95. Amazing stats. .379 OBP. Who's better than Perez in the AL? While I would absolutely love to have Salvador Perez (as would most any team), he really isn't that good of an all around hitter. His OBP this year was .280. For comparison sake, thats below Alexei's OBP of .285 this year. The dude is allergic to walking. He walked a grand total of THIRTEEN times in 553 plate appearances. Steven Vogt, Russel Martin and Brian McCann all had higher WARs this year. Once you consider age and contracts, I'd easily take Salvy over any of them, but let's not act like he is a HOF yet. Very, very nice young catcher that is unreal behind the dish, and has a nice bat. That contract is one of the best in the game - it is literally robbery.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 23, 2015 -> 02:01 PM) From a purely statistical standpoint, LaRoche's contract is worse than Papelbon's. Unless Papelbon is some sort of clubhouse cancer that is negatively affecting other players, that trade would do absolutely nothing for them. It's a trade the Sox should do without hesitation if offered. Worst case scenario, you can always bury a reliever, even an expensive one, at the back of the bullpen. You're pretty much forced to give a substantial number of PA to a big money position player. There's less flexibility. Oh, he is. But the Nats still don't do that trade.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 04:39 PM) I don't want Cespedes either, but for what it's worth both UZR and DRS rated him as a very good fielder this season. Yet dWAR hated his D. I go more by the eye test anyhow.
-
QUOTE (bjm676 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 04:28 PM) I agree. If they're going to shell out $100M, spend on this guy. Cespedes is a nice player and all, but he is not what the Sox need. Another mediocre at best defensive outfielder who hardly walks at all (low OBP) and strike out a bunch, and for around $25M AAV. That is a contract that you're going to regret (as are most FA signing these days). I for one hope the Sox stay away from Cespedes at that price.

ALCS- Kansas City Royals vs Toronto Blue Jays

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Oct 21, 2015 -> 04:26 PM) Yeah, once you had NY/Chi in NL TOR/KC had zero chance for prime-time. I'd rather them be on at the same time or staggered 6pm / 8pm start times, plus they only play on the same day half the time. Afternoon weekday games are a complete joke. People work for a living...
