QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ May 16, 2014 -> 08:56 AM) All the rainouts have allowed them to pitch their Aces in a crazy-high % of games so far. This will change. Yeah, it'll take a lot, but not impossible. Verlander and Scherzer have 9 starts after their game last night. Quintana has 9 and Danks makes his 9th tomorrrow. If Sale was healthy he would already have 9. Their 5 less games results in one turn of the rotation .Scherzer dominated Boston last night.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 16, 2014 -> 04:00 PM) Handedness matters very little in this instance. Draft the best arm you can. Would it really be a bad thing to have two pitchers like Chris Sale in the rotation? No but if you agree Sale is the best LH in baseball, you probably are not going to get someone jthat good. With Quintana already in the rotation, I was hoping a RH stud would fall in our laps. But as i posted, we will get who ends up 3rd

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ May 16, 2014 -> 02:27 PM) Ha. After I posted about how "I hope the Sox draft Kolek" I watched video of him. Reminds me of Jonathon Broxton. Big guy with max effort motion. I cant imagine he stays healthy / away from the bullpen. Since we probably have the best LH in baseball, I was hoping we take a RH in thi spot. But the decision will probably be made for us.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ May 16, 2014 -> 08:15 AM) Yep only 120 more games to make up 10, might as well pack it in and call it a season. The Sox have 13 games left with the Tigers and the Tigers are going to be stuck either playing a lot of double headers or losing off days because of all their rainouts. There is plenty of time to make up ground. We've also been without our #1,2 and 4 starters, starting CF and lead off hitter, starting 2B, 3B and RF for significant amounts of time. Considering that our #1 and #4 starters, CF, 2B and 3B are either back or coming back soon, the Sox are in decent shape. Tigers have 7 guys on the DL. You forgot Jones for us. Injuries are very much a normal part of baseball these days. In fact Texas has 13 on their DL. My concern is Detroit is winning despite injuries. When we get guys heading to the DL, we replace them w average AA/AAA type players.

QUOTE (VAfan @ May 15, 2014 -> 09:33 PM) Who hired the new hitting coach? If it's Hahn, that has to be added to the list as a HUGE positive. However, I agree with the person who didn't like the Ventura extension. Living in Virginia, I don't get to see that many games. But in the games I've seen, as often as not I felt Ventura really blew the game management to the point of helping LOSE the game. What's amazing to me is the Hahn has put in place the position players who could compete, with the major need now the revamping of the pitching staff. Since the Sox have tended to be better at developing pitchers than position players, this is an excellent approach. C - Tyler Flowers new hitting success makes him a viable option at catcher. 1B - covered with Abreu for 6 years of his prime. 2B - a possibly rejuvenated Gordon Beckham, and several options nearly ready behind him SS - still have Ramirez, who is experiencing an offensive resurgence. One of the best SS in the game 3B - Conor Gillaspie adds a necessary LH bat, and we have a power hitting righty who is nearly ML ready LF - Dayan Viciedo may have started to figure it out offensively. CF - Eaton, IF he can stay healthy, is a fantastic sparkplug leadoff guy RF - Avisail Garcia is still very young, but has potential to round out a solid outfield DH - Adam Dunn is not as bad as most of us make him out to be. We need a lefty power bat here if Dunn is gone next year. Hahn's additions are: Abreu, Eaton, Avi, Gillaspie, and some depth. The hitting coach gets some credit for the improvement of: Ramirez, Viciedo, Flowers, Beckham, and possibly Dunn. For that, we gave up Peavy, Rios, Santiago, Reed. Konerko came back for a fraction of his prior deal. I don't think these position players can compete. The good thing is we have a few years to add morre pieces. I think the outfield has the potential to compete. They are young and I think Garcia has a world of potential. But they are very average defensively. Abreu is a stud but by the time we comete within the division, I think 2nd, 3rd and SS will all be new. Flowers is still very questionable. He had a great month but he still has more strikeouts than any catcher in baseball. I think the question remains will his average stay up( not 300+ but hopefully .275 and his strikeouts come down. He strikes out more than Dunn does.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 15, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) The only move I didn't like at the time was the Peavy deal, as I've long thought Avisail overrated before we acquired him. I'm still not a big Avi fan, but I do believe it was the best deal that was on the table, and I think moving Peavy then was the right thing to do. Time will tell if it was the best deal. The White Sox could have had Iglesias(+) but Hahn wanted an outfielder. If the Sox did that trade then they could have swapped Alexei over the winter. I do like Avi but I saw a lot of Iglesias and he will be a gold glove SS for years to come. Not sure who else Boston would have included or if it would be the same guys ithey threw in the eventual trade. Ironic both Iglesias and Avi are out for the season.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2014 -> 07:53 PM) Tell me the team that has had as many as the White Sox. Rangers have 13 guys on the DL. Also check Tigers, Dodgers, Yankees to name a few.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2014 -> 03:04 PM) If Ventura wants to manage this team, he will be, unless the team takes a major step backwards when it shouldn't. If he was going to be fired, he would have been last year, and not given an extension. The fact that this is about a .500 team with all of the injury problems this year will go a long way towards securing that. Last year's team was 500 in May also. Look around baseball and you will see every team has injuries. Ther Red Sox won a world Series last year with multiple injuries throughout the season. Unfortunately for the White Sox, the weak minor league system makes it difficult to find suitable replacements when a player goes down.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 12, 2014 -> 08:36 AM) Why didn't the White Sox try to have a giveaway? I'm guessing they probably have fewer giveaway days because of the difficulties finding sponsorships and commitments (for 3 years) at the levels they want. 20. Toronto 21. Pittsburgh 22. Seattle 23. Oakland 28. Tampa Bay More than those teams, it's telling that Miami and Houston are significantly outdrawing the Sox. With how entertaining this White Sox team has been, compared to the Lastros, it's just kind of hard to believe. And Miami is one of the most expensive parks now, according to Fan Price Index/Team Marketing Report. Of course, the Mariners brought in Cano, but surely their fans shouldn't have been realistically expecting them to compete with the Rangers, Angels and A's this season. In fact, had the White Sox made the same move, 95% of this site would have been rebelling against it....at those years and dollars. As I have posted before, the White Sox major problem is they don't sell enough coprorate season tickets. I don't mean coprorate boxes which the major companies buy, but blocks of grandstand seats usually 4+. The companies then give them out to customers employees etc. I bet teams like Boston, New York, LA etc have 15-20, 000 seats sold to businesses.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 10, 2014 -> 10:11 PM) Same old Addison never 1-2-3. He got lucky tonight. Reed is not Rivera but he continues to get saves. Yet he has been pitching on bad teams for several years. I bet Arizona trades him at the deadline to a good team that needs a closer and walks away with a top prospect.
-
Will Sox be buyers, not sellers, at the trade deadline?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 10:12 AM) But, if they're 5-10 games over .500 come the end of July, selling really will not be an option. The offense has been great but they still are on a course to finish 5-10 games under .500. After last season, that would be a solid improvement. If Sale returns but the offense goes south then we are probably looking at 10-15 under and that would be disappointing. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 25, 2014 -> 03:52 PM) 1. It's not difficult to be an adequate closer if you're an adequate relief pitcher. 2. Nate throws 95+. Balta; What do you consider adequate???? The original poster said Jones should be able to match Reed's 40 last year. Also you totally leave out the mental part. Not every reliever can be a closer. Matt Thornton, albeit a lefty, an adequate reliever struggled in that role.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 10:41 PM) Reed was 6th in baseball in save opportunities and finished 7th in saves, also 2nd in blown saves. How is that irreplaceable? If Jones were to receive 48 Save opportunities just like Reed did, how many saves does he get? I would imagine 40. Well in his career Jones has never had a save. He has had 8 blown saves in his career. But you think in 48 chances he gets 40???? I'll stick w 20 at best.
-
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 05:55 PM) The way Jones finished last year, he was a reasonable option as a placeholder, at least, and possibly better. He just hasn't been healthy, but it's still early. Possibly better???? Reed had 40 saves last year on one of the worst teams in basball. Those 40 saves ranked him 7th overall in saves. You are dreaming if you expected Jones to be better. Jones , healthy might get 20 saves. I have no problem with the trade since the Sox needed to rebuild, but Reed will be very difficult to replace.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 06:07 PM) Your exactly right. Sad the way we have such disrespect for Sox players This is a business. The White Sox are going to want something in return for Beckham so unless Semien plays 3rd or SS he goes back to AAA and plays 2nd. Since this is a rebuilding year, playing Beckham to hopefully get something in July should be the goal. In July, you trade him or dump him. After the trading deadline, you bring up Semien and let him play out the year.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 10:42 PM) Lol, Robin thinks Webb is his long guy. Robin is too clueless to realize Webb should close. Lights Out Lindstrom should be the closer.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 03:26 PM) With Leesman on the mound, playing the OFs in the bleachers would help. Saw a few innings of Boston/New York last night. Kaat was saying basdeball has started to see a change this year where players are starting to hit against the shift. The Red Sox shifted on McCann as most teams do. But the stat they showed was that more than 50% of his hits this year are to left instead of right. On that play he flied to warning track in left. Kaat said some teams are starting to reconsider shifting for some players they normally shift on.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 09:16 AM) Well first of all, he's 2/19 and not looking very good at it. Second of all, he's not even on pace for 200 PA's, he's on pace for half that. There will be injuries and Paulie will get more at bats. Now when the increase comes, he may decide he does not want to continue. Then again, he could also get an injury and hang them up sooner. He could also get more playing time, go on a tear and sign again for next season. He may be the manager next season.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:45 AM) It seems to be the best option, and it probably isn't a good one. This is like shades of the early 2000s where the one starter is just a huge problem. It's one thing to count that spot as almost a guaranteed loss, but they need to find someone that will at least get them through the fifth or sixth inning. I found it strange at the time that before spring training the article that ran about Paulino being ahead of Rienzo. Obviously some combination of Hahn, Coop and Robin were already ticketing him to be the 5th starter. Then the results of spring training did not change that opinion. Either some combination of that group totally missed the boat or the other 5th starter candidates are really not legit. If the next in line are really weak, Hahn should have acquired another arm over the winter in case a starter went down to injury or totally flopped. Considering Johnson and Paulino had a limited resume of recent MLB success and Danks had some questions surrounding him, another arm should have been added via trade or FA.

QUOTE (glangon @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 04:39 AM) Robin isn't the greatest manager out there but to blame him for the failing bullpen is taking things too far. In the bullpen, you have a closer that can't close - Matt Lindstrom You have a lefty speciallist that walks the lefties he faces - Scott Downs You have a set up guy who can't get outs, walks people and is erratic - Ronald Bellisario You had your second lefty who threw more balls than strikes which ultimately cost him his roster spot - Donnie Veal. You have a newbie that has done well but does walk too many hitters - Maikel Cleto Nate Jones wasn't fit and got hit around. That leaves you with two rookies in the bullpen to rely on in Dan Webb and Jacob Petricka. Any manager would struggle to manage that bunch. The so-called veterans need to step up and do what they get paid for, especially Bellisario and Downs. Once those two sort it out and Jones returns, the rest of the pen will fall into place. It's Coop's fault.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 15, 2014 -> 10:31 PM) Downs got a out............praise the Baseball Gods. Actually a good move by Robin bringing in a new pitcher to face the rookie.
