  1. I am guessing the owners will not agree to a shorter regular season since there will be lost ticket revenue for the 16 who don't make it. My question would be how late does it push the World Series back. Last year it ended on 10/30. Some cities are getting cold in early November. Chicago 's high on 10/31/19 was 38.
  2. The only way they got to trade 1/2 Price was w Mookie. According to media reports, they had been trying to trade just Price and there were no takers. There were a lot of JBJ rumors last fall so my guess is that they they would have moved JBJ if they could have traded Price. Supposedly Bett's agent wanted $420 over 12 and Boston declined. I was surprised they also resigned JDM but I guess the timing was too early in Mookie negotiations. I am sure they knew the return on a Mookie rental would be minimal and I think it was.
  3. Dick: You would think so. But as I have posted in the past, Boston has a huge corporate season ticket base. Just about every major corporation over the 6 state region has a box or a block of seats. When I worked in New England, there were always corporate tickets offered for Red Sox games ( Yankees and a few inter-league games the exception). ABC Company is not going to drop their tickets because of Mookie. So the effect will have to be felt in the average fan tickets and the TV viewer ratings.
  4. I disagree. John Henry is very visible during the baseball season. He is not an absentee landlord. You can bet everything DD did JH signed off on. Everthing you read is Mookie wanted to experience the FA process. Good for him. But I do wonder if Boston burned bridges or does the high bidder still get him next year.
  5. I understand where you are coming from but there is another consideration. Does John Henry think the luxury tax savings offsets the loss of revenue. I think most owners rank profit ahead of winning. They know winning affects profit so they want their GM to balance the two. Red Sox are the only ticket in town(s) and their fanbase is large and loyal. I think it will be interesting to see the results. Mookie is an exceptional talent but also a box office magnet. JH took a huge gamble and hopefully it backfires big-time. But if you have $6 billion, it probably is a sputter and not a backfire.
  6. Downs also is marked at playing second base, so Boston could have potential options in the infield. Read more at: https://nesn.com/2020/02/what-to-know-about-new-reported-red-sox-members-jeter-downs-connor-wong/
  7. Just kidding you. I guess you never saw the story a few years ago about his wedding. It was Holywood at it's best. John Legend was the "wedding band".
  8. I doubt it. Dodgers will pay more of Price's salary or will give Boston a prospect .
  9. He didn't but you don't want a "Holywood" guy in Chicago. Going to the Angels was the perfect fit for him and his wife. They are more sushi than deep dish.
  10. I think the deal will go through anyways but the Twins part could be excluded. LA will just pony up another prospect or take on more of Price's contract.
  11. Moot point. the Pedersons are now LA royalty. They would not be happy outside of Southern Cal.
  12. Agree the principles will move and the secondary pieces may have to be adjusted. I would guess Twins will stay as the 3rd team though.
  13. Sorry to move away from the Mazara Love/Hate Soap Opera, but the Betts trade is on a temporary hold due to Graterol health questions. There may have to be a work -a-round.
  14. We are not sure about that. The Pederson trade occurred very quickly after the Betts trade. It almost seems the Dodgers took an offer that was already on the table . It seems odd they didn't shop Pederson for a day or two unless the Betts trade was made a few days ago but was only announced last night.
  15. Agree. He has said all along he wants his shot at FA. Also he is from Tennessee so it is not like he has roots in LA. He may love it or he may hate it.
  16. Trout to Dodgers???
  17. Reading takes from their fan site, they assume Graterol is a reliever and they got a starter w control for him. It will be interesting to see where Boston intends to use him.
  18. Remember the cash side of this trade. Dodgers must have sent an armored car as well.
  19. Twins probably got better but I think this takes a WC contender in Boston out of the race. Improves our chances.
  20. Hopefully Red Sox don't get much back
  21. I live in New England part of the year and every indicator here does not say he is being traded. Rumors have every option happening. They have a luxury tax issue. They also have a major PR disaster w the sign stealing. They have a rookie GM. It is all good for those of us who are fans of other teams. I would love Betts for the South side. He is an exceptional talent who is loved by their fans and so far has had a solid reputation. Regardless of the return, especially if it mostly financial, it will be another PR disaster. My gut is their ownership is wrestling w the luxury tax problem going away w Price attached to a Betts trade vs their fan base and the media turning on them. Their new GM must be shitting his pants. Well they went w the money and dumped Price . Hopefully the Dodgers did mostly money and not prospects.
  22. I think he resigns with Boston. but that could change if he does not like the new manager.
  23. Holt is also 4 years older and missed time last year w a shoulder and hamstring injury on top of his cornea injury he suffered at home. He plays 6 positions and is average at each which is a plus. He does not play CF. I assumed Yolmer's higher career WAR is because of his plus defense. Holt is considered a very good clubhouse guy. Rumors in New England are Holt to the Pirates but I would love to see Hahn get him.
  24. That may be now. I like Holt but he is really pretty much equal in value to Yolmer who signed a minor league contract.
  25. Home field should be some advantage in of itself. We know the Astros were passing info. So if the raw home/away splits did not reflect more success at home, the Astros did not get the advantage they were trying to get.
