White Sox MiLB free agents
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 10:53 AM) JJ CooperVerified account @jjcoop36 Some MILB FAs that stand out to me on a first pass...RHP Alejandro Chacin, OF/RHP Anthony Gose, LHP Ismael Guillon, RHP Christian Bethancourt, 3B Patrick Leonard. This is an interesting one since the Sox have some past success converting position players into pitchers.

Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 09:51 AM) It was at the end of August. Unless you got a deal for two years or a deal with options, it is pointless. Yeah that's why I included the option year.

Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 09:48 AM) I'd LOVE to bring in Trevor Rosenthal. I see he was just released. He would be the perfect reclamation project for Cooper. Former dominant closer, still at a good age He's missing most of 2018 due to TJ surgery but I guess if you gave him a 1-year deal with a team option it could work. Royals have done that with a few guys the past few years where they let them rehab for a season and then they use them the following season.

Shohei Otani is likely coming to the USA
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 8, 2017 -> 09:21 AM) Considering what they can offer, I don't think they would need a scout to tell them he would be worth it. KW only saw tape of Iguchi. I was going to say I don't think they need to see him live to see how good he is. I'm sure they are interested and feel as though he may not be a top priority maybe? It should be a relatively quiet off-season other than possibly receiving offers for Abreu and Avi, a merry-go-round of waiver claims, minor league signings, etc. so I feel like they could focus time on trying to bring in Otani.

White Sox unlikely to chase big free agents
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 03:01 PM) But that relatively young position player at an up the middle position = big $$$. IMO one of the cheapest and easiest ways for the White Sox to become competitivd again given their current state is to invest in pitching, more specifically the bullpen. I'd rather throw $100MM at four relievers like Reed, Minor, Shaw, and McGee than $150MM at a 33 year old Donaldson for example. Why? Relievers are so hot and cold.

White Sox unlikely to chase big free agents
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 02:33 PM) The more this all comes together, the more the idea of a guy like Swarzak coming back here as the closer makes sense. Short term, should be cheaper, will be looking to build his value while providing a stable arm in the back of the pen. You give him like a 1 year, $7 million deal and if he proves he's "legit," then you can either look to extend him or trade him. If he bombs, it's $7 million, not $36 million. I would love to see Swarzak back on like a 2-year deal. Toss him in the closer's role and if he pitches like last year, a team could look to buy him at a nice price.

White Sox unlikely to chase big free agents
QUOTE (SCCWS @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 07:02 AM) If this happens, I hope this decision is based on availability and not timing. I am sure the front office is looking at an organization depth chart and knows what positions are weak. If there is a FA that would fill an organizational weakness, it would be crazy to not sign them this offseason. Our obvious trade chips( Abreu and Avi) might also be a way to fill a void but it could also expose a new one. Getting a FA to fill a major weakness this offseason is still part of a rebuild. I don't see a negative getting a FA this year if there is a guy you really like and fills an organizational weakness. It also gives you a year to get him acclimated to the team and depending on the player may have a positive influence on the young players as they come up. While true, however, I don't think there are any big free agents out there that fit this category (except maybe JD Martinez). If Machado, for example, was a free agent this off-season, I would be on board with trying to sign him.

White Sox unlikely to chase big free agents
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 7, 2017 -> 12:37 AM) Only great post in this thread IMO. Sox fans on this board overwhelmingly want the owners to spend no money, get rid of any player making a buck in pursuit of the rebuild. I can't wait to see who fans on this board someday deem worthy of a fat contract. Most of you soxtalk fans go to games. I can't believe your patience and willingness to give JR and the partners so much of your money for nothing in return (since 05). The Sox front office loves this board if they read it. You know my desires: Spend, spend spend just as fans spend 15 for a burger and 11 for a brewski. This isn't the off-season to spend. Let young guys play this season and look at adding some talent next off-season.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Nov 6, 2017 -> 12:28 PM) Not sure why Grandal gets so much love on here and Fulmer doesn't I'm honestly fine going with Smith and Narvaez again next year. I don't really see the Dodgers just giving Grandal away anyway.

Sox Claim OF/1B Daniel Palka From Twins
Could easily be one of those players that bounces from team to team in the off-season in hopes that the claiming team can pass him through waivers.

Giancarlo Stanton traded to Yankees
QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 03:09 PM) Haha they would not turn down Bogaerts and Bradley I know they wouldn't but with that kind of offer, the Marlins are probably eating money which they don't seem to want to do. Also, 2 guys with 2 years of control really doesn't do anything for the Marlins rebuild unless they dealt each of them right away or over the next year.

Giancarlo Stanton traded to Yankees
QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 03:03 PM) A while back I referenced a Boston newspaper article that mentioned Bogaerts, Bradley, Groome. and one other unnamed prospect. Many here doubted Stanton could get that much. I agree with that now, too. I'm not even sure if those are the guys that they would want since Bogaerts and Bradley have limited control (though, I suppose they could be flipped in the summer). I'm thinking a deal will look similar to the JD Martinez deal with one B-prospect and 2 lesser prospects. And that would be the deal with Marlins paying none of Stanton's contract.

Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 02:07 PM) So I've kinda been wondering but haven't asked. I know there have been rumors in the cards interest, but isn't the OF their strength? And don't they already have a few too many "all hit/no field" players in OF? They also seem to have plenty of "no hit/no field" players as well.

Sox make roster moves
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 01:34 PM) I still don't see any way that they tender Putnam a contract. I know they like it when he's on the mound, but I don't know how you can guarantee the roster spot of a 30 year old who has spent that much time on the DL. A non-tender and minor league re-signing seems like the most likely route they go with him. 100% agree.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 12:00 PM) red Sox expected to target Hosmer https://www.fanragsports.com/heyman-red-sox...er-this-winter/ He's a guy who likes to go oppo field a lot right? He'd be a great fit for them if so.

Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 11:45 AM) I think it would be unwise of the Cardinals to expect Molina to remain completely healthy until he is 38 years old. There are a lot of miles on those legs. I was going to say it probably isn't wise to expect 130+ games either but then I looked and he's started over 130 the past 2 years. But yeah, I wouldn't just expect him to be healthy all year. It doesn't hurt to share more some time with someone younger. So probably not a Garcia for Kelly swap even though they could fill the backup spot with someone like Avila.

2017 Watercooler TV thread
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) I love Stranger Things. I think the second season was better than the first. I've been saying the same thing. Over half the season isn't Winona Ryder sitting in her family room looking at Christmas lights.

One thing worth mentioning in regards to the luxury tax amount is that it increases every year. In 2018, it is increasing $2m to $197m and after 2018, increases $9m to $206m in 2019.

Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 02:26 PM) It sounds like a chunk will. I remember seeing somewhere that the Sox and Robert were deferring a portion of it until next year to spread out the hit. Oh yeah that would make sense.

Your Off Season Plan
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 02:21 PM) Then why trade Kahnle? They'll need a few pitching arms just to eat innings. Otherwise, FAs to hopefully flip in July. They just aren't ready to assess long term needs. Prospects.
