In some ways that wratched up the tension, especially the Spitfire duels...you got a real sense of how there was no place you could safely take cover. The minimalist nature of those sequences was cool too...usually a Bay will overwhelm you with planes in the sky. This was the exact opposite, like the first Spielberg movie Duel. I sort of agree. And the lack of scene showing those soldiers being trapped instead of just a title card. Not asking for a Private Ryan D-day like scene, but some context. Just a "profile" or diagram from the side showing the channel/lane and the width would have helped a ton. VALERIAN was actually a lot better than I expected...at least in 3D IMAX/DBOX. Chicago's own Richard Roeper gave it an A-minus after giving Dawn an A and he also liked the initial Rise. I may need psychological help as I'm just a huge fan of the Ape trilogy. Just really enjoyed the three movies. Also thought Baby Driver was cool. Is the Big Sick good cause of acting? What's the hook on that movie? Sucks that they missed so badly with the third. It was on par with the more forgettable MCU movies to me (Iron Man II, Civil War- I'd say Age of Ultron, but it grew on me after a rewatch) Way better than the Andrew Garfield movies, though. I am a big fan of Taylor Sheridan, he was an actor at the end of his rope and decided to pursue his passion of writing. He wrote Sicario, Hell or High Water and now Wind River, which he directed. The movie is pretty riveting from start to finish and really captures the tough landscape of the reservation. It's really poetic too, reminded me of a Cormac McCarthy novel. I loved how Elizabeth Olsen's character wasn't a cliche and how the film avoided tropes whenever it could. The movie does two things in the last 25 minutes that still has me on the edge of my seat, both of which could've easily derailed and ruined the entire movie but it added to the moment. I think Dunkirk is the best Nolan flick, hands down and the best movie of the year so far, I can see it going head to head with Call Me By Your Name for Best Picture. With Dunkirk, Nolan took a lesson he learned or a device he employed on all of his previous films and brought them all to the table here. It's easily his most radical movie since Memento in terms of the movie's structure. Dunkirk is the third act of a bigger film, which is something that Nolan said himself. During the third act of all of films since Batman Begins, Nolan cross cuts on parallel action between multiple perspectives to build suspense. And all of his films since Inception feature a snowball effect where seemingly insignificant things or events early in the film gain importance as the film goes on. He combined both of those approaches on Dunkirk and was able to hold both for 100 minutes. The shorter run time worked well here. I loved the lack of characters and backstory in the film, I hate in movies (especially war movies) where the characters are all sitting down, telling each other about themselves and their lives away from the situation at hand. While the characters in Dunkirk don't verbally speak a lot, they spoke through their actions. Look at Tommy and Alex, both were willing to do anything to get off the beach but unlike Alex, Tommy wasn't willing to do so at the expense of being a bad person. It was a great idea to pair them up on the train because once they get on the train Tommy instantly fell asleep while Alex stayed awake and contemplated what he did on the beach because he was ashamed of himself and how he acted. And the ending shot of Tommy's face looking up in disappointment after reading Churchill's speech while everyone around him celebrates was heartbreaking because he's realizing that he's going back to war. I liked how intimate the film was with the different timelines and how they all played at different tempos. Cinematography was insane, they were able to use 200lb IMAX camera like a GoPro. Editing and sound design were huge too. Tom Hardy was my favorite character, I loved the stuff on the boat. I've seen Girls Trip three times, the best comedy since the first Hangover. While I did get enough laughs out of it to say I enjoyed the film, I got to say watching/hearing Samuel Jackson say 'motherf***er" over and over has lost all comedic punch by the end of the movie and Selma Hayek (God bless her boobs) as his foul mouth wife got old even faster though at least she did have a funny running joke throughout the movie Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The Last Jedi looks to be the only Star Wars movie since Lucasfilm was bought by Disney to have a solid, complete script and a normal production. TFA's script changed and rewritten everyday on set, R1 was constantly being revamped and was totally revamped and rewritten in reshoots, and Han Solo looks like a mess. But the family and I check out IT on Saturday. We went to the 9:50 AM show, and it was packed. I loved the movie. I read the book a couple times, most recently about two years ago. I thought the movie followed the kids' portion of the book very well. All of the actors were great fits, but Finn Wolfhard as Richie Tozier was perfect. The movie was very creepy overall with some good scares and a decent amount of humor. Bill Skarsgard did an awesome job as Pennywise. And if you watch closely, you can pick up on a lot of nods to what Part 2 will deliver. Having read the book, I highly recommend it.
