Well the idea would be getting someone who could be productive at the same time when our other top guys are potentially being productive. Avi Garcia doing good for 2 years when most of the other hitters aren't ready doesn't do anything for the MLB team.

In two years, the Sox have about 8 million dollars committed to the payroll. IF Avi continues to produce these sort of numbers, given the amount of time they have invested in him, his clubhouse attitude, etc...I see no problem with an extension.

But at what price? IMO, you'd have to get a nice discount to even consider it. No reason to pay him close to market when we can always sign a free agent down the road if we can't fill the spot internally in a few years.

 

Honestly, I just don't feel comfortable of committing to Avi unless it's very favorable circumstances. He just seems like a guy who could gain some weight as he ages and all of sudden his game falls apart.

Did I really need to spell out that it would be a price that makes sense? You're correct, I don't want the Sox to overpay to keep Avi Garcia long term. The point is, there isn't a single example of a "rebuild" working with all "prospects" on the field at the same time. Veterans will be needed to balance things out, and if the timeline works, a 28 year old Avi Garica, a guy that has been posting All-Star numbers for multiple years, would fit that bill.

 

Trading a 26 year old Garcia now, after seeing what an established JD Martinez got back, just because the Sox are in sell mode, seems like a miss. Killer package comes along? Send him on his way. But using control as an argument doesn't really work given the future payroll.

I think everybody agrees, it comes down to what you can get for him. If we can land a top 100 player that sounds good to me. But I don't think anybody wants 3 eh prospects for him.

Yeah at that point you are better off waiting to see if he can sustain it for another year and build a track record.

I like Avi and his work ethic a lot. But if they are trying to just completely flip over the roster I get it. Depends on the return, Avi is IMO worth much more than Kahnle but I doubt the market agrees.

After the JD martinez trade I don't think we'll get much back. I'd be happy to keep Avi and take that "risk" as it seems small. If he is actually good maybe it will be like a starlin castro situation.

I find Avi's value interesting. He gets two more trips through ARB before hes a FA, hes projected to be worth .5WAR over the remainder of the year. If you think he can produce 5WAR and you take into account what he might be able to get in arbitration 6M next year? 12 the year after, so 18M. If you package him and Swarzak you could put their value for the remainder of this year at 1WAR and Avi at 5 going forward(that might be a bit low) so 6WAR conservatively for both and going forward?

 

thats enough surplus value to get Kelly and an interesting arm maybe on the high end Alcantara, but more likely Junior Fernandez or Austin Gomber.

JD is a pure rental though and the Diamondbacks will get no compensation when he walks at the end of the season. Avi still is under team control for 2 years which is worth a lot more, if a team buys into him having figured things out.

I wonder if the Rays are buying. Either Melky or Avi for Jesus Sanchez and one of Lucius Fox/Kevin Padlo/Joe McCarthy...

 

I'd throw in Swarzak to make it two of the trio.

They're looking to find a bat they can plug in long term. Whether Avi counts as a big bat or long term idk but I do know they're looking to deal for someone like that. I hear it every day on the radio down here from our good friend Chris Rongey.

Wouldn't put it past them. If they really believe in Avisail Garcia, then it's not a bad thing. He's not a rental by any stretch.

The more it sounds, they believe Collins will have every opportunity to be our primary catcher someday--but it's such an important position to have a couple guys who are capable of playing it at a high level (a position I feel we have "plugged" to some degree in the past--mostly because good catchers rarely become available). Having 2 solid catchers in the system allows you rest knees, play matchups (Collins bats left--Kelly right), and allows certain battery combinations to form good rapport (Like the Wakefield/Mirabelli combo in Boston).

I totally agree with what you are saying, but to me it just seems unlikely we get could get Kelly with how important C is. I love the idea of Kelly but I think there are other prospects to be had as well.
