You pretty much have to give it a shot. Hopefully he's really into the idea of a great training staff, really young core and regular at-bats.

At some point over the last week, I referenced how I had read that many feel he wants to sign with a team that hasn't had a Japanese star in the past. Someone asked for a link but at the time, I'd forgot where I saw it.

MLBTR referenced this again today:

MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweets that executives from multiple teams are of the belief that Ohtani’s preference is to sign in a market that does not already have an established Japanese star, though Ohtani’s agents at CAA have not commented on that possibility. Morosi also spoke to one of Ohtani’s teammates in Japan, former big leaguer Brandon Laird, who offered a similar suggestion (Twitter link): “I feel like he just wants to come and not be compared to other guys who have already been here — to start fresh on his own, show what he can do by himself.”

I think that was me lol but yeah that is speculation until Ohtani or his agents confirm that.

I’ve heard from someone in the know that Otani doesn’t want to join a big market team that’s ready to win now. He wants to be THE guy that brings a team to glory and doesn’t mind a rebuild. Know any teams like that?

This article in Japanese indicates that Otani has narrowed his list to 5 teams: the Dodgers, Yankees, Padres and two unnamed teams.

Not sure if either of these things mean anything, but just putting it out there.

The more I hear about bringing the team to glory, the more I think SD is where he goes. I think his agent is based there. West Coast. Rebuilding team with some talent, and hard to beat the weather. Although if that is BS, the Yankees have to have the upper hand, and he did almost sign with the Dodgers out of HS>

I feel like those two things don't go together, so one is probably wrong. Saying he doesn't want to join a big market team ready to win now and then naming the two biggest big market teams that are ready to win now in his top 5 doesn't make sense.

EDIT: Read the (admittedly rough) translation and it seemed more like speculation about the Dodgers Yankees and Padres than Ohtani actually saying those were the top 5.

They also have a few former Japanese players in the front office as well.

He's supposed to be a good kid. Doesn't do anything but play baseball. But I do wonder if the whole "winning because of me" thing is something that teams really want to hear. For what he costs now, it's a no brainer, but if he were able to get 9 figures, if that is true, it would make me pause a bit.

Right now, for the sheer bargain money maker he will be, if any team isn't interested, they need a new front office.

I have to imagine that Seattle is in there somewhere.

“We did submit a presentation,” general manager Rick Hahn said. “I am sure every major league club did the same. Despite the fact that we know the odds are long due to other competition and restrictions to sign the player, we are committed to exploring every potential avenue in order to make this club better for the long term.”

“We certainly think he has the ability,” Hahn said of Ohtani’s wish to both pitch in the rotation and play a position. “I am not going to go to go far down the line with this other than to confirm our interest. We know this is a long shot, as I said. We do have a responsibility to leave no stone unturned, exploring every avenue to be in the best position going long term. You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take said Wayne Gretzky and Michael Scott. That is our approach to this one. We will take our best shot.”
