No, death is not an option.

Shields sadly probably gets the nod, although I could see another pitcher getting it with a great spring training

Lucas Giolito

This is a cruel reminder Balta. Not cool, man. :P

My vote is to bring Mark Buehrle out of retirement to pitch opening day.

OK, seriously. I could go either way with MiGo and Shields. My guess is Renteria goes with Shields opening day followed by MiGo, Giolito, Lopez, Fulmer.

Edit: went ahead and voted Shields. Man, that really hurts to say.

This is what polls were made for. I went with Gonzalez. I liked watching him pitch more than Shields, and I don't want any of the Rookies having to pitch in that setting without having seen it from the bench once.

Lucas Giolito

I agree

Buehrle signs a 1 day contract, throws 1 inning then bullpen.

at KC- Shields, Giolito, Lopez

at Tor- Gonzalez, Fulmer, Shields

First home series-

vs Det- Giolito, Lopez, Gonzalez

Agree with ya keeping Giolito, Lopez and Fulmer as 3,4,5 in the rotation. I prefer MiGo myself but think Renteria goes with Shields.

I don't see the point in not starting one of Giolito or Lopez. They're the clear 1 and 2 pitchers in our rotation as of now, and hiding them from Opening Day because they're young is pointless- they're gonna have to make high-pressure starts someday, so why not do it now when we're not trying to compete?

My hope is Lopez. Most likely it will be a shields though

Why are we limited to those 2?

I'm on board with this. Team isn't winning this year so I don't really care who starts opening day but let one of the kids start the home opener to give the crowd something fun to start the season.

The opening day starter often slots to other teams top starters. For development, I don't want one of our youngsters dealing with a 6-14 type season. Let the highly paid veteran take the lumps and demonstrate professionalism. Put the youngsters in more favorable matchups.

I'd be interested in the results of a poll that included all options, because I don't think either of the two listed options will end up being the Opening Day starter

Shields just because of seniority. That's it.

I had another post in this thread going off the basis we opened at home...forgot we are on the road. Brain fart.

Assuming no one is skipped the first time through the order, the #2 starter pitches home opener.

Neither Shields nor Gonzalez. Instead sign Jake Arrieta and have him be the White Sox Opening Day pitcher.

Mark Buehrle was the Opening Day starter from 2002-2011 with the lone exception of 2006 when Jose Contreras started. That's 9 OD starts which is the Sox record. So I vote MB.

You rock

Moreover, Mark could probably right now go out there and go 6 IP 3 ER throwing 84

Not to be a jerk, but anybody but James Shields. So I voted for Miggy.
