Morosi: White Sox interested in "both Machado and Harper"

Featured Replies

Adding Thor (with limited years remaining before FA) to the ticking time bombs we have in Rodon, Giolito, Kopech and Cease seems to be the definition of insanity, not only because of the talent we'd have to give up...but, most importantly, the likelihood he'd either get injured, or that Cooper would have him throwing at a more comfortable 94-96.

If we're doing that, might as well trade even more for deGrom, sign Harper and roll the dice.

Odds are we'd still end up being short unless we spent another $150 million (over two years) on free agents to supplement the line-up and bullpen.

Not a free agent until after 2022.

Who though?  Sell the farm to trade for some of those guys for the small chance that Bryce comes here?

They wouldn't necessarily need to sell prospects.  They could also add money.  I'll continue to beat the Greinke drum.

Really hope we get some sox rumors soon. Hyped up then nothing

I guess I was confusing him with deGrom in terms of remaining contract years.

Well, if we were willing to trade Robert, Cease and Madrigal...something like that would be the asking price.  I'm assuming they would ask for Jimenez first, and Hahn would nix that idea.

With pitching longevity being so up in the air these days, trading "plus" position players for pitching seems a recipe for trouble, especially in the position the White Sox are in, trying to lock in their starting line-up of the future in 2020.

It's actually after 2021. Baseball Reference lists 2022 which means he's a free agent during the off-season of 21/22. As a reference, look up a current free agent and he is listed as free agent eligible in 2019 (just checked Bryce Harper as an example).

Pardon my ignorance.  Is Thor a nickname or a joke?

Syndergaard's nickname

So basically this move makes no sense (at all) unless we're signing a whale.

One year of competitive window for a huge chunk of our farm system that hasn't yet defined itself is the definition of sabotaging the rebuild.  Not to mention we're already discussing trading a pitcher, Rodon, who's under the exact same amount of control and who still offers significant upside (although not like Thor's).

Olney says the consensus between execs is that Machado goes to PHI and Harper ends up back with the Nats

I kind of had a feeling that he could go back to the Nats since he doesn't seem to have a big market. Especially with their rumored extension of 10 years,$300m. Once you're willing to go that much, you might as well offer a bit extra AAV per year with another year or two added to the deal. Good starting point for negotiations for sure.

He actually said those were "common guesses", I think that sounds a little less like reporting new info than saying it's a "consensus"

Then why he rejected nats 10 year large offer? Thought would get more $$$$and years in free agency? Diubt he returns to d. c

A Nats lady beat reporter said on mlb network there very small chance he goes back to NATS.

Because accepting any offer a few days before FA is idiotic for a player of Harper's caliber.

I think it's down to 3 teams for these 2 guys: the Sox, the Phillies, and the Yankees.

I'm actually fairly confident that the Sox will get one of them. Probably Machado.

That's a bold statement, Cotton.

Who else would be competition for these guys? The Cardinals? The Nationals? I don't buy that. Like I said, I think it's down to those 3 teams. The Sox have as good of a chance as anyone.

I honestly don’t know how I’ll react if they sign  Harper or Machado. Probably go crazy and buy a jersey. Need some excitement brought back to baseball for my sake that’s for sure. I miss fun baseball.

Yes you have to figure it’s a  lock the Sox will agree to a contract 5 or 6 times the size of the biggest contract they have ever handed out. And agree to that contract with one Scott Boras, because who doesn’t want to play for a team coming off a 100 loss season, with 6 losing seasons in a row, that is virtually ignored in its own city.

That's the spirit!

If Hahn lands one of these two fish so to speak, it will be one of the all-time great FA sell jobs to a player.
