The Sox won't be ready to win in 2019, but they could be winning for years starting in 2020.  It's going to come down to money, the chance to win, money, the chance to win for multiple seasons, and money.

At this point resigned to this playing out the way we expected at the start - Harper signs with one of the superteams for a gajillion dollars, Sox offer considered "competitive", etc.

Just pay the guy what he wants. It's not hard.

If Boras wants to get the Sox to bid against themselves, what is the one team that would prompt them to do that? Great negotiating tactic, by the agent. He knows how much it would sting, to have him sign with the crosstown rivals.
