JDM staying in Boston

Still think a trade is still potentially very likely. Not saying Sox but they need to shed $$ bad.

Would be hard with more opt outs lingering after this year

Honestly, does this really mean he's staying in Boston? Maybe the conversation he had with the new GM was about waiving or reducing his no trade clause? He's guaranteed his contract now and not riskin

If he can opt out after next year too, why would the Sox trade for him?

I don't think they would, unless the Red Sox basically gave him away for salary relief.

No one said they’d give up a ton for him. Getting him for 23 mil for one year wouldn’t be the worst thing if it costs you average prospects.

Jd Martinez made the decision because he determined he would not make more than what he signed for.

Theres nothing he could do to make himself more valuable next year (being 1 year older) than he is right now.

His salary drops $4.5M for 21-22.  While $4.5M isn't a ton in baseball terms, that is almost a 20% decrease.  As I said, he was never going to beat $23.75M in AAV in 2020.

And the Red Sox still have to shed payroll. *dun, dun, dun*

I’d rather just sign Grandal for multiple years then.

Then we’d be spending $41 million for two 1B/DH types.

Not out of character for this organization, I guess.  Sign Wheeler and we pass the Rays with three players, almost.

Sure, but you could be contending against 8-10 teams to sign him.  JDM has very few suitors if he was available.

Yeah this sucks, I really wanted him and Jose only got a QO which would have been perfect.

Grandal and Nick C now please.

Assuming they could also offer him a QO if he did opt out in 2020 as well. You'd get some type of leverage, and another year older, even more unlikely he'd get a better deal.

BUT BUT BUT!!! HOW WOULD JD MARTINEZ KNOW NO TEAM WAS WILLING TO SPEND MORE! TAMPERING!!!

Why?

He would only have to beat a 2 year contract at that point, and perhaps other teams would be in for him. When the White Sox are the odds on favorite for your services and Scott Boras is your agent, it seems your options are limited.

Obviously a year older, they may even be more limited, but you never know. The White Sox paying $25 million a year to a DH seems far fetched.

People dont get this. What are the odds we outbid these other teams and are viewed as a positive destination?

Well it was a fun thought exercise

I am worried this year was start of decline.  I actually would like to see if his trend continues

Encarnacion and Calhoun better not be the offensive upgrades

Very terrifying how JDM not opting out makes this free agent class that much uglier for us.

Very low...Wheeler is going to also have half of baseball going after him. It’s why Martinez, Encarnacion and Puig are very likely targets.

All you really have to do is look around the league and realize there aren't many options. If no NL teams were that interested 2 years ago, they wouldn't be now.

As badly as I would want him, I've been saying for months he's probably not opting out.

He would be a year older. Hed be giving away the most valuable year of the contract, this year. If a team was not willing to beat the offer to capture this year, they will be even less willing to beat it without the youngest and projected best year of the deal.

To be optimistic for a second, if Boston does trade him, they likely won’t trade him to the Yankees which eliminates a possible suitor

Have you listened to Hahn. He said the White Sox are now a “destination “ for players. That and the money will be spent should mean they get whoever they want.

Who knows, maybe we can toss them Spencer Adams and he's a right colored Sox this winter.  Boston can't afford him, he pretty much screwed them and his forcing their hand to deal him.

Once again, it is already implied he would have to beat the offer to opt out. You can gauge interest without discussing numbers.

This isnt rocket science. There was possibly only one - at most two - suitors for JD. Having a team negotiate against themselves doesnt usually work; although it did work for JD the first time.

I am on record saying an opt out didnt make much sense given the risk vs reward. At most he gets a small raise but at the expense of possibly getting less. His current contract was likely a maximization of his worth.
