Nick Madrigal will have a shot at being the Opening Day 2b

And setting up a stronger bench from the start, where Leury belongs.

Gotta love how this organization gives its prospects a chance more so than most of the league.

The Padres and White Sox do wonderful things towards getting their prospects up early/when their ready.

No extension no shot. This talk is to not be obvious about manipulation.

A good Spring and a moderate extension will have Madrigal with us on OD.  No one gains from prolonging the inevitable.

They can extend him down the line like they did with Sale and Quintana. I’m not sure he is the type of player that will break the bank in arbitration so there is less risk then a Robert or Jimenez and even if he gets to FA he won’t command top dollar

Agreed.

so basically hes the starting 2b

Very little chance he’s the starting 2B on OD.

I’ll still be surprised if they don’t sign another infield option before Opening Day.  The lack of depth on the left-side of the infield is a bit scary at the moment.

Yes, especially since I don’t expect Madrigal to make the opening day roster.  Mendick and Leury?  Oof.

Still some guys left:

Brian Dozier

Scooter Gennett

Brock Holt

Jason Kipnis

Brad Miller

Ben Zobrist

This isn't a very good list for helping the left side of the infield.

Kipnis is available as well. He has Chicago area ties, IIRC.

I'm interested to know if they bring Kopech up after they get the year back and then let him pitch til our season is over. It sounds like they will do just that.

Magical isn't the type of bat right now that needs to be up, extra year be damned.

what do you expect the org to say? They are going to hold him down for an extra year of service time? come on now

Yup.

Sox are doing this exactly right. Have to send him down for control

He’s probably gonna hit .960 this spring

Kipnis is on that list and he still doesn't help with the left side of the infield

I am one of the few okay with Leury and Mendick for the time being. Doesn't concern me in the least. However I think Madrigal and Gennett are clearly better options.

Leaving Madrigal down in the Minors could be a fools errand *if* it is being done solely for service time purposes.  Madrigal does not profile like a star player that will  dominate the league this season and  become difficult to reach agreement with on a contract extension.  If he demonstrates in ST that he is truly not ready for advancement to the major league roster, that is a different story. In that case, he will have more to prove than can be accomplished in a 4 week stint in the Minors. Another option might be be to have Madrigal, Mendick and Leury on the OD roster and platoon Madrigal with Mendick  and Leury as necessary. That way, Madrigal and Mendick can be evaluated by Renteria and Sox management to determine if the Sox need to send one or both of them down and if they need to add another inf/outfield bench player.

Once fans see Madrigal and Mendick play a few games in ST, opinions on this will be flying here.

To those saying that this is a way for the White Sox to manipulate his service time without being obvious, what happens when he hits .700 and Mendick and Leury hit .200 in spring? They shoot themselves in the foot if that happens

Replying to myself... if Madrigal does end up dominating at second base and we learn that we have an Altuve or Dustin Pedroia type at second base, don't even worry about that either because we will probably have a play-off team this year. Then the Sox should happily sign Madrigal to an extension knowing what they have at another key position.

Kipnis is a 2B, no?

Ummmmmm, last time I checked 2B is on the right side of the infield.

I thought of it from the player's perspective, not the fans.

From the players perspective 1B and 2B are on the left side of the IF. That's where I thought everyone was discussing. I thought this whole discussion was about 2B.
