It wouldn't have cost them Madrigal + Heuer if there weren't other teams bidding aggressively for Kimbrel in July, and not enough has changed since then to significantly change his market.

  • Let me get this straight. We're thinking of spending 16 million for Kimbrall, and thinking about not offering Rodon 18.4 million. If it happens this way, every one in the FO should be fired.

This is the very definition of the sunk cost fallacy.

Let's see what we trade him for.

Braindead decision

I don't think they exercise the option unless they know there are teams interested in trading for him. Who is he getting traded to and what for is the question here.

It’s the only way it makes any sense. They have to know. This team (and basically no team) is in a position to have 30 mil tied into 2 RP’s, one of which was an absolute joke in a set up role.

So nobody watched him pitch in August or September?

.

Hahn  traded Tatis, Jr. , Madrigal, Heuer and Pilkington for less than nothing.

The only reason for Hahn to exercise the option on Kimbrel  is to try to  save face.

Please decline the Kimbrel option and just buy talent outright via free agency.

16M should bring in a pretty good player .

Nobody that's going to be swayed by such a small sample size.

Now official.

Which big market team needs a closer for $16 mil?

Adam Frazier was less than spectacular in SD.

Is there a match there?

Didi and Moniak for Kimbrel.

This is pretty much what it comes down to imo. Watch that team beat the Sox in the World Series with CK recording 4 saves in the series....

Not necessarily "big market," but don't the Cards need a closer? What can they cough up?

Rays and Reds need a closer but Sox would have to kick in at least half the contract. Depending on how serious the Cubs are about trying to reload quickly they might be interested. Twins also need a closer.

Please trade him. I never want to see him pitch again.

Sunk cost means the money was already spent.  This is not the case.

Kind of hard to consider the Reds a big market team, and a contending team needing a closer after losing Castellanos and Wade Miley

Melancon will likely opt out…but move not possible without substantially cutting payroll.

I'm talking about trade capital, not money here.

They traded Madrigal and Heuer so they think they have to pick up the option.

And they didn’t want to pay a certain former Cuban closer Iglesias now on the Angels…
