Who are the 4 bench players for the Sox?

If you can plug in a guy like Billy who can make catches that are going for extra bases 90+% of the time, I’ll take that over having a marginally better but still below average bat. Honestly, I was on the fence but I just sold myself on Billy in the time since I started posting on this thread. What’s more valuable a guy who might put up a .675 OPS or the guy who can gut the competition by literally taking runs off the board?

Can someone explain to me what Alberto brings to the table?  Dude has a career 54 wRC+ against RHP.  I’m not sure how that works playing beyond Andrus & Timmy.

Yeah, he’s kind of a weird fit. Harold Castro , a left-handed bat, probably would have made more sense on a minor league deal.

I think he’s referring to if the bench was Romy, Leury, Alberto.

With the way they talked about Romy, I’d be surprised if he didn’t make it. Although I could see Alberto making it over him, with another NRI making it as 4th OF.

Not much. He rake against LHP, but most of the roster does. He’s a better IF defender than Romy and apparently an awesome clubhouse/culture guy. Grifol raves about him recently.

I think Romy makes the roster over Alberto, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see it go the other way.

Yeah, especially since Romy has options. Idk, if they feel Colas, Leury, or Romy can be options in CF when Robert needs a day off, maybe they’d take Alberto over Hamilton and Marisnick.

As others have said, it really depends on if Colas makes the OD roster.  Hard to get a read on that only a week or so into spring games.  Though I fully expect to see one of Eloy, Sheets, or Leury in RF far too often to start.  White Sox are gonna White Sox after all.

I will guess Seby, Leury, Alberto, and Burger with Sheets as the every day DH - assuming everyone is healthy.  Not what I would do, but my guess as to what they will do.

I really wish mlb would expand the bench so there were more room for guys like Hamilton or for that matter Sheets. With four bench spots, there’s little room for any kind of specialists like you’d see back in the days  of ten man pitching staffs. How would you fit a Jerry Hairston on a roster today? Having a bat like that on the bench was invaluable. It’d be nice to have a bat like Sheets but he simply isn’t versatile enough with the short benches.

Rosters should be 28 minimum. Cheap owners. Very much needed.

I like that idea but I doubt Billy is quite ready to retire. Seems to me he is the type that would rather play at AAA and wait for the inevitable call up than retire.

Can you imagine what he's thinking right now with larger bases and limited pickoffs? Great opportunity for him to stick around.

All he needs now is to grant the ability to steal first base and he's golden.

At least one guy on the bench has to be able to hit.  3 utility players would be ridiculous.

Marisnick, Leury, Alberto, Romy,  Haseley, et al.  I'm lumping 5th outfielders with utility players.  None of them can hit.

Marisnik has to make it. Need some OF defensive depth.   Im not sure Leury makes it if Grifol has his way.

Leury is going to make it. He might not survive the season if he falls flat on his face again, but he’s safe for now. There also isn’t really anyone to better fit that role. But hopefully he plays very sparingly.

How do you figure there is no one better to fill that role? Leury may have literally been the worst player in mlb last year

Who on the 40 man is a better option for both IF/OF duty that won’t make it anyway?

Yeah but why Marisnick in particular instead of Reyes or Hamilton

Reyes is an awful OF. Hamilton may as well hit with a pool noodle. I think Billy has a chance though. Reyes doesn’t.
