April 10, 20232 yr Been pleasantly surprised with Colas so far. Was not expecting this from him so far. Is anyone else surprised by his all around play so far or was this to be expected? deserves a thread imo 0.1 fWAR with a 159 WRC+ as of yesterday Edited April 10, 20232 yr by joejoesox
April 10, 20232 yr Rookies are streaky(tm) I'm not surprised, I even expect he'll have some stretches even better. And some stretches that will invoke fire Hahn comments.
April 10, 20232 yr I thought he was special and might challenge some of the vets to raise their game.

I think he's going to be very solid when all is said and done. Edited April 10, 20232 yr by Lip Man 1
April 10, 20232 yr The kid is only 24 but has had quite a bit of experience including 2 years in the Japan League, so I'm not that surprised.
April 10, 20232 yr He's a better all around athlete than I figured. He seems pretty fast and smart on the bases and he seemed ok in his CF game.

April 10, 20232 yr I remember last year Bernstein's dumb ass was saying Colas is a complete nonprospect and won't be a productive MLBer. Edited April 10, 20232 yr by ron883
April 11, 20232 yr Compared to what else we've been running out to RF the last few years, I'd amend the title to Colas is Great.

My other rookies I wanted to get in the off season have also had nice starts James Outman and Stone Garrett. Garrett was sent down to start the season but was called back up and since has gone 7/12 with 1 HR , 2BB and 5 RBI. .4 fWAR in just 3 games . Outman 8/27, 3 HR , 7 BB, 9 RBI, 1 SB .8 fWar playing mostly CF Colas 11/36 , 1 HR, 2 BB, 4 RBI, 2 SB Outman might have a better year than Benentendi. We'll see at the end of the season that maybe my plan wasn't so bad . May end up better than Hahn. But it would've been difficult to pry Outman away from the Dodgers. He seemed to be in their plans along with other youth like Vargas Some rated rookies about the same age as Outman are still in the minors due to defense which was always why I liked the unranked Outman better. Time will tell on all of them. Garrett is already 27. My goal before the Sox signed Benintendi was to get younger more LH ,faster OFers and more team control thus freeing up the money the Sox used on Benitendi for other needs (pitching depth).I was not inclined to try to sign a 2nd baseman unless we got Andrus for cheap which the Sox did. April 11, 20232 yr He's been excellent. In a year or so we should get a middle infielder or 2 to join the party. And if we could develop some pitchers, we could put this window nonsense into a deep sleep.

He's not really that fast . Too early to tell how his OF play will be graded. His sprint speed is only listed as 55 and if you compare his baseball savant page to Outmans, Outman's jumps off the page at you while Colas doesn't look good at all. Too early to tell really but thought I'd mention it. Colas still seems to be getting a feel for MLB so even though he's been hitting OK, nothing really stands out . He's been steady , nothing too good or too bad

April 11, 20232 yr I got to see him play in WS last year. He is built different. It was clear he'd be in the show, it was more of a "when" than an "if"

Can hit a bit, run a bit, defend a bit, hit for some power. We always seem to have guys with massive holes in their game instead of finding guys that contribute to wins just by not being a black hole at any given baseball skill.

It may go up. It's a small sample size but sprint speed isn't something that needs a big sample. For example Outman's sprint speed was 93 and Garrett's 73 if I am remembering right. April 11, 20232 yr It's early, he has some flaws, he has some strengths, and I'm just happy it hasn't turned into a complete disaster.

Sheets might've taken an OF assist away from Colas when he cut off that beautiful throw home yesterday against the Twins. The catcher would've had to catch it and apply the tag but the throw looked accurate. He really hasn't had a chance to throw anyone out yet . No one had tested him until then.By the end of the year I think he will have more OF assists then the other Sox OF's .
April 11, 20232 yr I didn't really believe in Colas until last year when he hit like 10 home runs in 6 days so not sure I can claim credit. He is a big boy. Every time I see him I think " ooo, that's a big boy". I was mainly worried he'd be a left handed dayan viciedo, they are like spitting images sometimes, but so far his fielding has been truly what I thought and tbh left handed dayan viciedo probably fine offensively.
