So there is no mechanism under which the ownership group could select/elect a new chairman? What if JR became mentally unfit to run the team. Has it always been this way? In the past would it have been impossible for JR to cede control to one of the other owners without selling his shares? Sorry for all the questions I am just trying to understand this situation. It just seems so odd to me that an ownership group can not transfer or share decision making duties amongst the group.

I mean it's not an absolute. But basically the ownership deal is a tax scam in all but name. Jerry has sold the team, and taken money up front for it, but doesn't want to ACTUALLY sell it because then the capital gains taxes kick in. They are pretending Jerry still owns and operates so as to keep the facade up. If Ishbia starts speaking for the franchise, that falls apart and the IRS will come calling. The historic ownership structure was that Jerry held all of the power. That changes, red flags go up.

JR controls the Board.

You'd have to execute a hostile takeover or have him declared mentally incompetent/incapacitated.

Remember his sons were buying out minority shareholders at the same time the Ishbias were buying, too.

Under his contract JR has the sole power to run the day to day operations of the club, period. The minority owner(s) have very little to zero say in things including the sale of the club.

The only way JR could be removed is if he does something illegal or puts the team in a perilous financial situation.

Since the minority owners haven't taken that last step, given the Sox reported financial difficulties, I can only conclude they are still satisfied with his leadership and you can perhaps assume the reports of their financies aren't as bad as first thought. Accountants have a way of manipulating things.

Ok, I thought it was that Ishbia just bought out JR's partners.

JR's partners had the option to sell to Ishbia. I don't think anyone knows for sure how many took that offer up and did so.

I understand that JR can't be force out. I was just trying to understand why he couldn't give up the power to run the day to day operations while still being a part owner an thus still avoiding the tax implications of selling his shares.

I can't comment on the tax implications but I strongly suspect the reason he refuses to turn over control is because he is still making money (which eventually will go to his heirs) and perhaps more importantly because his ego and arrogance simply will not allow it.

But if Ishbia already owns part of the team why couldn't he be allowed to become the decision maker even without a sale. Isn't JR just the Chairman of the ownership group? Could he not resign as chairman while still being a part owner of the team?

I'm hoping that this happens. I think this same situation occured with the Orioles ownership a few years ago.

@WBWSF, I don’t think you have any shot with Jerry anymore because he doesn’t want to pay guys like Benintendi and Getz to work elsewhere and pay an all new GM. But I hope you have been sending your updated resume to Ishbia in the meantime.

Dominguez was a straight up lighting of dollars on fire, well done Chris Getz.

He isn't a closer, but of course we signed him to be one.

He had one pretty good year but in 2024 he had a 4.4 ERA, 2023 a 3.78 ERA. Good seasons in 2018 and 2022

Here are the 2026 opening day team payrolls from The Associated Press. Look at how other teams that have spent right around as much as the Sox are doing record-wise. Meanwhile, Getz is on his way to his fourth straight 100+ loss season in an assistant GM and GM capacity and his third straight 100+ loss season as the full GM. The guy is a failure.

And that number is only because they begged Jerry to sign Mune.

I am sure he has a say behind the scenes. I can't imagine putting up $2 billion, and not having a say. He just can't be in front of the process until either Jerry dies, or the option to buy is able to be exercised.

Until I see even the slightest hint of any meaningful change in the way this organization operates and until they start holding people in the organization accountable for incompetency, I remain unconvinced that Ishbia has much of a say in how this team operates with the exception of getting a new stadium built.

I mean, I share in the bewilderment that he's content in letting his ~$2B investment continue to rot, but I haven't seen anything to suggest that JR is taking any direction from him.

WestEddy is now down to just Pereira and I guess Teel/Montgomery for Getz praise-worthy moves...

It is early enough in the season to try to solve some issues and start winning games and that is what I think will happen.

Dominguez blown saves and lack of control in key at bats make it clear that he should no longer be the Closer. Given that, the back end of the bullpen should be restructured with a different Closer - perhaps Tanner McDougal and Grant Taylor.

Trading for Acuna was a mistake that is easy to fix. Just DFA him and move forward. Acuna can't hit, he can't catch fly balls or grounders, and he doesn't even look like a major league player out there.

The ownership stuff is confusing so I used AI to dig into things a little more and well, nothing is going to change until 2029 at the earliest, no matter what might happen.

He cannot become the controlling owner before 2029

This is the hard wall.

The agreement explicitly forbids a transfer of controlling interest before 2029:

No early buyout

No acceleration clauses

No quiet takeover

No “emergency” ownership change

Multiple sources stress:

“In no event will such a transaction take place before 2029.”

Even if Reinsdorf wanted to sell tomorrow, the deal legally blocks it.

A perfect example of "let's at ;east get something" that never works for losing teams. They got something but it's often a bad something that contributes to losing more games.

We are so conditioned to the habits of losing baseball as fans.

Having talented players makes a mark on less talented players.

We like to pick on the Mets but I'll give them credit for not acting like small market. Such a shame in Chicago it has been reduced to the small market mentality.

It has to be frustrating for the North side fans where ownership only thinks of winning a division based on the other teams in that division got weaker as opposed to a World Series. Brewers traded another stud pitcher and the Cards no longer pursue serious free agents and Cubs not taking action of dominating.

Made sense for StL to take a step back from Goldy Arenado Edman Donovan Contreras failures.

Walker off to an incredible start, Wetherholt has held his own and that minor league systes now has a ton of positive momentum.

Brewers have always traded early like TB see Josh Hader Devin Williams this time Peralta.

Come on man, they didn’t make this deal and forget Jerrys advanced age and forget to consider it. If Jerry passes I’m sure there is a plan in place that includes this deal with Ishbia

Especially since if Ishbia already has bought up a large portion of minority shares, as was already reported, he has a pretty vested interested in getting to the finish line. Even if it is just a verbal agreement with someone like Michael R, I am sure this detail wasn't ignored.

Things have gotten so bad that the positive fans that were left have run for the exits.

Edit: Last time our pal WE "visited" the site was Sunday! He was here 24 hours a day during the off-season, and now there's baseball and he's MIA. Look how Getzy has massacred my boy!

The turd cannot be polished at this point. There were times in the offseason I tried, but yea, this is pretty much a hopeless situation until JR is replaced.
