White Sox sign Martin Maldonado 1 year/4 million, vesting option for 2025

Why would we be in on the reliever market?

Even if Santos is out, you've got Crochet, Leasure, and there's several AAA/AAAA scrubs that can fill out the pen. I'm not sure why we are spending money on that.

I assume they would be of the cheap one year flier quality to hope they have a hot start and deal at the deadline.  And if there’s one thing the Sox love to waste money on anyways, it’s relievers.

  • It's better than trading for Salvy.

  • I'd say "stick a fork in him" but all my forks are currently in Benintendi, DeJong, and Stassi.

  • Why is it that a player has to be completely awful for a year before we get interested in him?

Korey Lee has options but I would just play him at the MLB level.

Same. They really must not care much for Carlos Perez as well. If Lee starts in Charlotte, you're looking at Chuckie Robinson as the "veteran" backup.

Done deal, yay….gross

This is going to be the worst hitting team in baseball

What the f***? Why?

Weird move. Hope it’s real cheap.

I was hoping the Stassi trade would make them not sign guys like Maldonado.

Gotta love the acquisitions with absolutely no upside.  As usual, spending money on complete crap.

So it will be Stassi/Maldonado basically splitting the time then?

I'm assuming it's like a super cheap deal.

Sure would like to hear they are making some headway on moving Cease and Eloy for some real pieces.

Wrong.  James Fox had it here first.

Goes to show what the Sox think about KKKKKorey Lee, but he looks like he could hit just as poorly as a 37 year old Martin Maldonado.

In a lost season, grabbing a few flippable relievers on 1 year deals seems like a pretty sound idea to me. Hopefully Getz isn't dumb enough to lock up volatile arms to multiple years like his predecessor.

KC connection, of course

I don’t mind going all defense, game calling at catcher. It’s going to be a very young starting staff

Yep, especially if Santos isn’t 100 pct.  God knows Crochet cannot be counted on.  Fujinami is someone with great stuff that maybe they can rebuild and flip.

They must have had a SNEAKING suspicion that Lee wasn't going to be able to hit over .150 again and that all the defensive gaps (other than throwing arm strength/release) were going to be a massive detriment to the young pitching.

THAT and the fact that going into the season with a relatively older catcher in Stassi coming off an a "missing" season probably wasn't the greatest strategy...especially if you look at average number of games caught.

White Sox better just move back their outfield fences to the deepest Old Comiskey distances ever recorded...

The White Sox way.  Sprinkle in a couple overpriced reliever signings for no reason at all.  Getz apparently learned from the best.  Hahn is still haunting this team.

Were gonna win like 55 games and be stuck with the No. 10 pick....lulz

And then cut payroll below 100 million the following season after attendance implodes once again

250 catchers signed none can hit

The only positive.  This rumored bad move came true which will prevent a much worse rumored move from happening.

I guess this means Getz doesn't like Korey Lee. Really need to see the contract numbers.
