My only issue is if you fire Poles, you then have to go through a GM search before a HC search and I’m not sure the top candidates are going to wait out the Bears with that uncertainty.  I’d rather quickly pounce on Ben Johnson and give Poles one last chance to fix the trenches before making a change.

Hopefully they are doing the GM check already quietly to narrow candidates.

If they fire poles you have to hope that Warren was doing the GM leg work in the background and the next guy steps in knowing who he wants

This team is going to win 4 games. With the issues on the OL and DL, even with a new coaching staff, I don’t see a 9-10 win team next year.

That means Poles now has 4 years under his belt as GM, without even coming close to a winning record. You bringing him back for a 5th year? Because if you aren’t…then you shouldn’t let him pick the new coach. Because now the new GM is coming into a coaching situation he inherited…which is what the Bears always do, and it’s worked out so well before..,

Exactly. Either for some reason you are so impressed with losing football, you must keep him around for the next 3 or 4 years, unless you hire the second coming of Trestman, or you have to fire him. They are 4-12. He has shown he cannot build a team. Now he's blaming training camp.

He is not a good gm, period.

Thanks for making me find the article.  I would have rather not read this garbage.  🤣

“Ryan Poles attributes slow offensive starts to training camp”

“I believe it stems back from training camp,” Poles said. “It’s just some of the things that either weren’t addressed, they weren’t detailed enough, whatever that is.”

No, Ryan.  It started when you did nothing to improve a terrible OL for a rookie QB.  Fire this dude already.

How a guy who was an OL doesn't know the key to good teams is in the trenches is beyond me. I guess when youre a GM, you pick up guys like yourself. Getz likes slappy guys who can't play. Poles likes OL who went undrafted.

Poles mistakenly thought he could acquire a bunch of mediocre to bad OL and get them coached up.  Turn s%*# into gold.  Too bad he also hired an awful coaching staff.

Nothing more needs to be said does it:

In fact, in 32 seasons since the unofficial beginning of the McCaskey era — following the firing of George Halas-hired Mike Ditka after the 1992 season — the Bears rank in the bottom 10 in the NFL in nearly every key measurement of success. They are 231-284 (.449), which ranks 23rd; They have nine winning seasons (tied for 27th), seven playoff seasons (tied for 26th). They have four playoff victories (only the Lions, Commanders and expansion Browns have fewer).

If the McCaskey's were selling anything but an addictive product — football — they’d have been out of business long ago with that record of failure.

Do you have strong feelings one way or the other about the McCaskey family? You seem to be an enigma on that subject.

Well played.

What we do know for sure is that as long as that family runs this operation, any success will be in spite of them as opposed to because of them.

Love the fact that the media both locally and nationally is calling out this franchise and ownership for the idiots that they are.

I was thinking about the timing of a hire, like I think Johnson might not be able to be hired until after Detroit’s run in the postseason. I’d hope Warren is searching for Poles’ replacement by now if he’s going to fire him. I also wonder if coaches like Rivera or Carroll have ties to the GM they’d want to work with.

They should be able to interview Johnson during the bye week before the SB, if the Lions make it that far

There are three ways they can proceed, and two of them don’t make a lot of sense:

1. Change nothing. You now have a GM on the last year of his deal, who is going to be in “save his job” mode and responsible for bringing in the next coach for the foreseeable future. Having a lame duck GM is not what I would want for my franchise

2. Extend him. Good luck announcing an extension at the end of the season for a GM with a 14-37 record. If they extend him, they’ll get absolutely roasted, and for good reason.

3. Fire him. The clear move. Start fresh with a GM/HC that are linked up from the start.

I agree #2 isn’t an option.  But if Warren wants to take the reins and thinks he can land Johnson, I could live with #1.  But no doubt, a clean start at GM would make the most sense.  I just feel that coming out of this coming offseason with Johnson as HC is the single most important thing for this franchise.  If Warren hasn’t been preparing on the sidelines for a GM replacement, I’m worried the timing isn’t going to work well in terms of landing Johnson.  Perhaps that’s an unwarranted fear, but Johnson needs to be the priority above all else.

But don’t know why they can’t do both.

You can land Ben Johnson without having Ryan Poles at the helm, especially if Johnson has a pro personnel guy he wants to bring in.

To me, landing Ben Johnson isn’t the No. 1 priority. I say that because Ben Johnson will suffer the same fate as Matt Nagy, Matt Eberflus, and everyone else if the roster isn’t improved. He may have some great offensive ideas, but they won’t work with Larry Borom Matt Pryor and Jake Curran blocking for Caleb. It’s like hiring the best chef in the world and telling him he can only shop at 7-Eleven for ingredients.

Do the Bears still take Caleb at 1.1 if they could redo the draft? I'm not so sure they would.

I’m not feeling very good about our chances of hiring Johnson. There’s just too much disfunction here to overcome. The roster (esp. OL) needs a complete overhaul. And the guy assisting Johnson with that task is the GM who has proven he cannot do anything but botch nearly every roster and personnel decision. Would any of us feel comfortable working with Poles? Especially knowing he’s a lame duck GM?

I understand there’s the whole, storied franchise, “build the team and become a legend” allure,  but when you look at it everything on the field - the path to success is easier in Jacksonville. That is true regardless of who the GM will be.

Fortunately, we won’t have to wait too long to find out. Whenever Detroit season ends, I can’t imagine the decision for Johnson will be dragged out very long.

I’m sure there is reservations, as well their should be. However, if Johnson is set on becoming a HC this offseason, I do think the Bears are one of the better options, because Caleb. They have the QB, on a rookie deal for the next 4 seasons. That alone makes it fairly appealing, in my opinion.

The pick that should have changed is Odunze.

I'm on record in saying they should've did exactly what they did the year prior. Trade the pick and got a haul like they did with Carolina. They weren't a Caleb Williams away from competing with all the holes they had and still have.

With that being said, hindsight is they still either should've traded the 9th pick, or drafted an OT/DE.

I said at the time that Odunze is the popular pick but the better pick for the team and Caleb was the best OL available.

Who would they take instead?
