Dodgers defenestrating Sox, Snell signs 5 years, $182 million

Featured Replies

Free-agent left-hander Blake Snell and the Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a five-year, $182 million contract, sources told ESPN on Tuesday night.

The deal, which is pending a physical, includes no opt-outs, some deferred money and a $52 million signing bonus, sources said.

The $182 million contract is the third largest for a left-handed pitcher in major league history based on total value, behind only David Price's with the Boston Red Sox in 2015 ($217 million) and Clayton Kershaw's with the Dodgers in 2014 ($215M).

And for the Dodgers, it's another massive deal for a free agent. They've now handed out five contracts worth at least $100 million since the start of the 2023-24 offseason -- the same number as the rest of MLB combined (and five significantly bigger than the Benintendi and Grandal deals, haha).

In what way is this signing about throwing the Sox from a window? Wouldn't hurt anyway. Sox dwell in the sub-basement.

The dodgers throw the white Sox out the window or the dodgers dismiss this Sox from this position of power they are in

Getting thrown out an egress window lolol. That’s so much work for the one doing the throwing.

I'm all for dumping on the Sox, but, what?

If the White Sox had to keep signing and trading for every starting pitcher who hit the market because they need 15 top starters to make it through a season, I think people here would see that as a problem.

lol they just bounce off the window well and come right back in

WE ARE HERE FOR MORE LOSING

This game needs a salary floor and cap in the worst way.

A floor would fix just about everything. I am in favor of both but would make the floor a priority first.

Forget it, he's rolling

Not quite the correct usage but the history teacher in our school was just using it in class so I decided to incorporate a new word of the week.

Snell would drive Greg crazy with 4-5 inning 100+ pitch count outings.  Great personality/interview, good kid but wouldn't be the best mentor for Smith and Schultz compared to a Buehrle/Sale fast and efficient approach to pitching.

Every 4-5 seasons, you get a Cy Young quality performance out of him as well.

Baseball is broken.

We need something that forces Jerry to have a robust and intelligent investment in creating young and talented minor league rosters. Then, we can join the big show’s bottom tier

The funny thing is that the Dodgers weren't signing big free agents until Freeman.

Then they decided to start breaking the bank.

Yeah, it seemed like they spent on the guys worth spending on like Betts, Freeman, Ohtani: true superstars in the game. Yamamoto if he lives up to the hype.

Which required the Red Sox and Braves fumbling.

So baseball may be broken, but it's because of Friedman setting up the Dodgers to exploit other teams' mistakes.

Isn’t this a good thing, as it tightens the  supply of the elite available left-handed starters?  And the size of the contract versus Crochet’s also should enhance his demand.

Yeah this was pointed out in the thread that it takes a lefty off the board and from a team that posters didn't really like as a fit.

Not to mention Kikuchi 3/$63 to the Angels.  Rwo lefties off market and Fried next to go.  Supply and demand.

What's broken?

Are we supposed to shame the Dodgers for doing what other teams choose not to do?

I hope they sign Soto next and JR gets all butt hurt about it. "Look at these guys just spending money on good players, what the hell is that about??"

You did mean the Red Sox in the headline. That's the negotiations at the adult table. The White Sox are sitting at a folding table with the kids.

Did I miss the part where the White Sox were in on Blake Snell??

I’d be for a fan strike until there’s a salary cap and floor, but it’s not going to happen.

I have more of a problem with the teams that have like $50M payrolls not spending than the teams like the Dodgers and Yankees.
