Going for Wilson was a 4D-chess move when all he needed to do was play checkers.

I just remember when posters were wondering why Getz didn’t ask for another prospect instead of taking Wilson and the Getz defenders were adamant that Wilson could be flipped for a better prospect in the future.  Doh… that didn’t age well.

Hahahaha, yeah let's hear it for the Cease trade

So if the Cease trade goes completely south, as it looks like it may be headed, what does Getz have on his resume now?  A couple good very minor trades and potentially the Crochet trade?  All of his other trades have been crap.

They'll put him on the 60 day DL when spring training starts.

But why?  Scholtens is turning 31 and he’s bad.  He is obvious DFA material.  Getz cutting Wilson while retaining Scholtens is a massive admission of failure in that Cease trade.  Brutal.

Keep cutting other guys just to stash him?

What GM could risk losing a 31-year old reliever who put up these stats?  Scholtens is the very definition of a jizz mopper.  Look at these numbers and now imagine what Getz thinks of Wilson…

85 IP

1-9 Record

5.29 ERA

1.529 WHIP

100 Hits

15 HR

58 K

30 BB

Seems really dumb to me.

I guess the logic might be that at $950k he might actually clear waivers. I hope so, but he definitely wouldn't have been my choice to cut, especially for another soft tossing lefty. Feels like Wilson was a good first half away from being a trade asset, with next to no risk if it didn't work out.

Scholtens made $747,250 last season.  So either Getz thinks Scholtens is more worthy of a roster spot than Wilson, or he is admitting that acquiring Wilson was a bust.  No GM makes a move like this over $200K.  Logic was tossed out the window on this one.

I can’t wait to see how the handful of Getz defenders try to justify this garbage…

Scholtens was filler/mop-up at best...when "healthy" and next to zero trade value.  Might be negative value, actually.

A good story for one month about persistence perseverance resiliency.

The Padres really used him to the point that Jimmy Cordero comps might fit.

His stuff simply degraded from overuse/wear and tear.

Requires some scouting though in 2022/23.

I just looked him up and apparently Jimmy is still pitching in The Nippon League.

I’m guessing they think Steven Wilson clears waivers. It’s pretty puzzling otherwise.

Quite the testament to his perceived trade value...he sucks so bad only the worst team in baseball history might have use for him, maybe.

Isn’t the league minimum $800k though?  Why does an extra $150k really matter.  I’m guessing I’m missing something obvious here.

Regardless, I’m pretty sure his stuff graded out well last year.  As such, he was one good half season away from actual trade value like you said.  I don’t our current infatuation of lefties with fringe stuff.

Yeah I agree. I don’t think teams would care about the extra $150k

They just could have easily DFA'd him - no one would have claimed him. It makes zero sense to keep him rostered at this point. It isn't like he is some magical arm that hits triple digits.

It’s absolutely ridiculous to have held onto him this long if he needs to start next season on the 60 man roster.

Has to be something to do with his injury status and not being able to do anything until he officially comes off IR.

He is off the IL technically. Guys come off the IL when season is over. He’s taking up an active spot.

Sox with a flurry of picking up warm bodies prior to pitchers and catchers reporting. We need a thread predicting number of wins soon. One thing is for sure. In all our lifetimes on here the Sox have never had a team with so many no-names. Even huge Sox fans might have trouble knowing who all these guys are. The average fan certainly couldn't name five White Sox players.
