Nice game from Martin, we hit for some power and had some good ABs. A bad Reds team but whatever, we're playing some decent baseball the last week. We keep this up we might f*** around and win 58 games as @flavum noted in the game thread. Extend Getz?

AL Win-tral? Every ALC team has a winning record in May.

Sox now just two games behind the O's, who they visit at the end of the month.

The AL central becoming the best division in the AL since the balanced schedule went into play is one of the more "wtf" moments in recent team sports imo. Nobody in a million years saw that coming.

On Pete Rose Night in Cincy Davis Martin shut down The Not So Big Red Machine by allowing just 1 run in 6 2/3 innings.

Sox won 4-2 with 2 solo HRs from Lenny Sosa and Michael A. Taylor.

Sosa's was an opposite field HR and his next AB he put one off the wall for a double but nothing became of it .

Sox are now 7-6 in May.

Martin lowered his ERA to 3.65.

Robert was 2/3 with 2 singles, a walk and a stolen base.

Andrew Vaughn was 1 /4 with an RBI double to drive in Robert after his steal.

Chase Meidroth had a single and 2 walks.

Vasil got his 1st career save pitching a scoreless 9th for the Sox 3rd save this season. He lowered his ERA to 1.80.

Steven Wilson pitched 1/3 inning to close the 8th out .His ERA is 2.19.

My grandmother-in-law was SO excited for the Orioles to be good again, so while I enjoy the schadenfreude watching the prospect hugging backfire on Elias - especially after all of those O's fans came here and argued they should only give up a Cal Ripken bobblehead for Cease - I'm also very annoyed at them for dicking around.

Vargas can play him some hot corner!

He's certainly had a sustained solid month of play on both sides. He's looking closer to the guy the Dodgers thought was worth calling up at 22 then the one that they traded away. I give him a lot of credit because everybody talks about having a transformative off season few if any guys ever do it. He did, he's a different player. He still has a long way to go to be considered even an average regular but just looking like a below average one is fine for now.

Back on April 1st I said he had a small hitch in his swing where his 1st movement was moving his hands back.

After the Sox biomechanic , Aaron, found the flaw, Fuller worked with him on a different hand position to close a hole in his swing and likely work on the things I hear Quero talk about which is getting your hands moving forward.

I haven't seen any side by side video to see the difference but it seems to be working.

This could be premature but some teams do get hot.   This was severely lacking during the Grifol era.

I'm tempted to almost break my Safe From Watching White Sox Baseball.

Did I officially break that though watching the Desert Dogs and tune in to watching the farm?

I know we still stink, but it's fun to watch a team that tries. Compared to last year it's

night and day.

In that respect, Venable is doing a nice job.

And it can't be easy to be traded from the only mlb org. you've ever known; he's already from a different country and may have language issues (not sure how English fluent he is); and then to go to the Sox with their record and who were being badmouthed by players and media.  None of that is easy.

He seems to be enjoying playing again and of course that's easier when you're making winning plays. That ball down the 3B line he could fumble and you never know suddenly with two on what could go wrong. Baldwin with the big crack late -- liked that even tho we couldn't pay it off. If you're going to be a bad defender most nights as a utility guy at least be able to crack one once and awhile. On the next good Sox team we'll need a guy like Baldwin and never really mind having them around even if sometimes it's maddening on a bad team when they play too much.

I really like Venable and this coaching staff, they have the guys ready to play. Their plate discipline is night and day from last season, the defense looks a lot better too.

Venable has done some things that I didn't like in the moment, but he's a first time manager, and so far I'm pleased

Look folks. I can be as negative as anybody. But I'm here to tell you. The painful weeks are over. The Sox with Meidroth, Quero and this no name pitching staff led by what must be an awesome pitching coach, is a decent team. This team conceivably could play .500 the rest of the way.

What I'm telling you is if Vaughn and Robert would actually emerge, and Beni get healthy, our team can actually contend. Wake up Robert ... start mashing like a superstar. Vaughn, cmon. Lead us to more victories. This team is no longer a doormat, baby. Just think if Elko hits AND Robert and Vaughn awaken for good. ...

Hate to break it to some of the tank lovers ... no reason to trade Robert. ... And by the way I heard one of the national talk show yappers say the NBA commish DESPISES tanking and says it's against all tenets of what sports are supposed to be. The tanking, baby, is over. KEEP ROBERT and keep winning. Trying to decide if and when I relent and return to mlb.com.

His English is good enough to not use a translator. I've seen him and Sosa interviewed and Sosa used the translator . Vargas does not. You can find the Vargas interview towards the end of yesterday's White Sox Winner thread with the CHSN Post game Show I posted from YouTube.

You've looked at the AL Central standings recently?

Cincy has now lost 9/11.

Let's wait until we beat some really good teams before announcing contention windows are opening.

As much as I try to show others here that there are good things happening this is just some good things happening because there are talented individuals and coaches on this team .

The problem is there are not enough of them and the owner isn't doing anything to acquire anyone but the players hanging onto their careers by a thread .

Much of the talent is in the starting pitching and the young players the Sox got from being bad and tanking like Meidroth, Quero and Vargas ,Shane Smith and Mike Vasil.  Smith and Vasil are instant payoffs from the Rule 5 Draft. Vasil picked up on waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays. Didn't even have to develop them. OK editing this. Sox did work with Smith  added the Kick change up and his velocity ticked up. He just developed very quickly after he was acquired .

Baldwin, Cannon, Davis Martin, Sean Burke , Luis Robert are products of the Sox farm system.

Robert is on his way out the door. Sorry Greg. And he won't be the only one. Even some of the young talent like Korey Lee (26) or Davis Martin (27) could be traded.

If Getz can't get decent talent for Robert I doubt Reinsdorf would even want to pay Robert's $20M salary next year so he might be given away just to shed his salary. That's the only possible reason Bob Nightingale is saying they want to be rid of Robert by Memorial Day just 2 weeks from now. He isn't nicknamed Boob for nothing but sometimes he's right.

Frankly I don't think it will happen that early. But it could if Reinsdorf tells Getz he wants most of his $15M salary from this year off the books ASAP.

So hold your horses and slow your giddyup about the Sox being back. Last April and May maybe you remember the Sox had an 11-8 run . This current run will end and talent will be traded and even more salary will be dumped and many more games will be lost than won.

There is more talent on the way but it is thinning out rapidly after some devastating pitching injuries and Colson Montgomery's recent failures.

I'm sure once the lineup starts producing a little with the arrival of Teel and Braden Montgomery the once strong pitching staff will continue to crumble because Tommy John surgeries take a while to heal and pitchers take time to recover and the healthy young pitchers will tire because they have not built up much endurance yet . Hagen Smith, Noah Schultz and Grant Taylor will have setbacks and are not sure things as the Colson Montgomery saga so poignantly shows how quickly promising careers can falter.

Right now they don’t stink and when Benintendi and Tauchman return there will be some more pop in the lineup.
The kids can play.
